Ground Zero Syria (Part 10) - Za'atari Refugee Camp

  • If the severity of a conflict can, at least in part, be measured by the number of refugees it creates, the Za'atari camp in Jordan is a disturbing reflection of just how bad the civil war in Syria has gotten. When it opened, Za'atari had just 100 families. Today, it has about 120,000 residents. Located 18 miles south of the Syrian border, it's the fourth largest city in Jordan and the second largest refugee camp in the world.
Since July 2012, when the camp was opened by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Jordanian government, Za'atari has become home for the huge numbers of Syrians who've fled the violence and trauma of their country's civil war since it began in March 2011.
Robert King visited the Za'atari refugee camp just 72 hours after the sarin gas attack in Damascus forced even more Syrians out of their homes.

Ground Zero Syria is a series where we've compiled photojournalist and videographer Robert King's footage into a series of raw, largely unedited vignettes that present a snapshot of the ancient city as it crumbles and burns while its citizens are killed indiscriminately.

It is terrible, i felt extremely sad for the children, crying for them. Five siblings, lost their parents and there is not even a relative to take care of them. Horrible psychological trauma for them. Thank you Vice to show this misery to the world. 2:41

Why are they acting like this is horrible conditions? I know that it isn't good but when my family was in a refugee camp, There was barely any clean water, They had very little food and almost no clothing. These people have livestock and a market with fruits and vegetables, They have schooling and actual buildings!

"Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would pay for many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace." -Bill Hicks

All the people of the world are Gods children. It's when this world polutes our heart with hate do we become far from God. Islam and Christianity are different but it's about culture. We all need to allow each other to believe what we want. There is no where for people, in a lot of the world, to have the freedom to believe and say what they believe in, without fear of dying or beong locked up. The world needs understanding, wisdom, and love. I pray we acheive this before it's too late.

I am totally ignorant in terms of what to do in these situations. However, I think a good idea would be rather than selling stuff to each other (they are refugees! How do they find work or even money?), a small community-like system where tasks are shared and people earn their keep (food, materials, beddings, clothing etc) by working to help maintain the camp. Making them self-sufficient so they don't have to worry about water, food and other basic necessities of life. Get a few gardens going, send cattle and other farm animals, the necessary machinery to make fabrics and other items and teach them to be good to each other in this terrible, harsh situation that they are all going through together. Kids could work 1~2 hours a day, the older kids taking care of the younger ones. People can contribute what they can and work out a fair system based on health, age, number of kids and all that. When your country, your president and your geographical neighbours give up on you, the only way to build back is with organization and a community spirit. I will keep watching what happens and I hope for the best.

Sorry but that isn't true. While Christians may have it better under Assad, it was certainly far from a perfect setting of religious tolerance. Many people including Christians were imprisoned and tortured due to criticisms against the military regime. Muslims and Christians may have been treated equally but that could just mean they were oppressed equally too. Also I think you're exaggerating the FSA's war crimes and getting them confused with the Jihadi groups in Syria. There's a difference.

all i ever hear about is atrocities and war crimes being committed by both sides. there's been so many of them that no one knows who to believe (honestly) about which side did the recent chemical weapons attack. i think that the stories in syria are actually typical for a war. it would be nice if government leaders would quit treating war like it was a game to them and try to imagine if they had to be sent over there to fight. hopefully peace will be resolved soon.
