I've had my parlor palm since I was a kid. So its 40+ years old. It is now just one stalk and at least 10 feet tall! Lucky I have high ceilings in my house. It just sprouted seeds which is always cool. My "life plant" I call it. :)
My parents have one that's over 40yrs old and it's up the ceiling!☺️ I have managed to propagate cuttings from it, from the base of the mother plant has worked the best in my experience. Great video!
I love these plants. I accidentally left one on my balcony during a summer downpour, it was literally floating in its pot when I found it but after an emergency repotting it bounced back so quickly. Definitely the hardiest houseplant I have!
I got one for my birthday and I am surprised it’s alive The woman who sold it to me who owns a plant shop by the way said to put it in direct sunlight almost every day and I was wondering why the leaves were burning up and crisping up really hard-core. Thank you so much this video has helped me and I’m so glad that my parlour palm hasn’t suffered too much damage and he is salvageable
I was getting ready to ask why mine get crispy brown leaves, and then you answered it lol Despite living in an extremely high-humidity city, I guess my HVAC filters out so much of the moisture that it's affecting the plant. I'll put it on the counter when I shower every now and then.
Mine flowered many times ,rn it has 2 flower stems that I am waiting for to flower :'). I never colected the seeds or did anything with it ,plant propagated itself ,seeds fell into the pot and they grow all by themselves xd. Now when I am more into plants I will help it propagate but just so you know that is pretty easy to care for and even flower. I have mine now for about 10+years and it was my first house plant ,I got it as a gift. You can forget about it and it will be just fine. The easiest plant to care for in my opinion :)
What do the flowers look like? I just remember the seeds was green then turned yellow and dropped all over the floor. I cut the new seeds off a few weeks ago because the cat I am babysitting was eating them and my plant.
Mom had one and made it flower (accidentaly) by watering it with water that dropped from the laundry, so it had laundry sftener in it, and her plant loved it....
Thank you! My cat goes crazy for my Parlour Palm - more than any other plant in my house. I have a wire 'cage' over it to keep him off. I've read that cats love this plant. Not sure why. Glad to know it's not toxic to them.
Excellent video - now I know not to keep it right by the window where it gets quite hot & sunny in the afternoon. No wonder it was struggling. And I’m thrilled I could probably keep it on a table in the middle of a room with a window. Thank you!!
This plant is so simple but yet I love it! It’s so tropical looking and I love the vibes. Mine is pretty small still but doing so good! I bought it small❤
enjoying your videos, idk if its exactly a parlor palm that i have but i think its pretty similar. this video was in depth and covered all the issues so thank you a lot for making it!
Thank you so much! I bought one today because it was on sale and spoke to me. I've got it in front of our huge window but it's near the vent so I'll move it.
I've not seen any videos about how to take care of an older one of these. They are certainly slow growing in low light. My great aunt has had one growing in her house for at least 15 years and probably longer. The window for that room faces north into a tree covered alley. The tops of some fronds have just about reached the ceiling, but the plant looks healthy and green. Its a trip how static they look and feel in that state. I felt the leaves and thought they were fake plants at first, but then noticed that they had a mild case of spider mites! I read the nurseries often plant many seedlings in one pot, and they thin out over time. In her pot, I remember seeing that there were 3 stalks. This is certainly a plant that will be nice to watch over a long period of time.
@@GoodGrowing I hope so too! They're so beautiful :) This year I started taking care of one that's at most 6 years old that a family member gave to me, so I'm still learning about them. So here's my dumb newbie question.. inside a sleeve (saw this term googling) how does it drain? Do I need to tip the water out sometimes or does it just evaporate quickly enough? Or do I need to take the plant out of the sleeve and water it then put it back once it's drained?
Ive left mine outside during winter in Australia they have brown tips. And a possum chewed them down to little stubs they’re bouncing back and have a ton of new growth.
I think mine has been getting too much direct light and not enough humidity as I live in a fairly dry place. Should I trim off the brown crispy leaves? Add fertiliser???
My Chamaedorea Elegance Palm tree I planted in potted 2 weeks ago I noticed leaves are fading. It is like the leaves are a fade green with with faded white mixed in. It is not a fungus as it looks like a natural color in leaves. I have it under grow light but not real bright. I keep check if needs watering so don't know what is causing it or what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated
My parlour palm is drying from roots to leaves one by one. I brought it 2 months ago, I keep it in indirect sunlight and away from window. I keep it where it can get enough indirect natural light and I water it once in every 15 days and i give it a water spray once in every 3-4 days but don't know why it is dying one by one. Please suggest what to do. I cutted all the dead leaves and it has now very less leaves and I live in Germany.. How can I save it please reply
Question about pot size - do they like space or to be in a smaller pot per their size. How do they tolerate being (or do they like to be) somewhat root bound? Mine seems... lacking... and after seeing the one you have here I'm wondering if mine is in too big of a pot.
It’s hard to say without seeing but I found my pot to be good size for the plant. Given I have parted with this plant since making the video so long run I can’t say
Just bought one of these 2 weeks ago! Some of my bottom leaves turned yellow and then noticed the yellow leaves are now turning brown so confused why since I water once a week🤷🏼♂️ it also has a few brown tips so maybe it’s the lack of humidity (dry spring) - would misting a parlour Palm help them with lack of humidity? Should I feed it liquid fertilizer? I’m not sure if the store fertilized it before I bought it so didn’t want to over fertilize
So unfortunately yellowing leaves will always die off eventually. They may be a sign of overwatering. Do you check the soil before watering or stick to a schedule? Misting could help with the humidity or you could put it on a pebble tray. As for fertiliser, liquid would be fine as long as it's diluted to the right amount
Mine has started to pale and the tips going brown, and it was so healthy for like a year. I split it in Jan and the other is doing fab. I'm so confused 😂😭
@@GoodGrowing thank you for the response. Hopefully it'll bounce back after time! It's the only plant outside of succulents that I've managed to keep thriving 😅
Depending on the conditions yours is in, it's possible that it will need water that infrequently, yes. But I'd say better to go off of soil wetness than time as changes in weather/time of year can affect how frequently it needs watering
It's not really slow growing plant, I buyed one a little bit earlyer Crhismas, and now I separate/repot it two for parts (The leaves and the root too), both are live and grow relativly fast... xD xD xD
Hi Emma, can you please recommend a potting mix? Reviews on Amazon for so many of them say they’re bug infested so I’m struggling. Also, what ratios do you use of amendments? I have perlite, coco coir and worm castings. Thanks so much ❤️
I typically mix my own out of 60% coco coir, 20% perlite, and 20% worm castings. Sometimes I switch up the ratios a bit depending on the needs of the plant I am potting!
Hi, great video!! My leaves seems fine but my plant has started dropping to one side. I have started giving it more light but it hasn’t perked up yet. I don’t water it often but mist it everyday. I only have it a few weeks. Any suggestions?
The only time I've experienced this is when my plant was thirsty. They do like to stay a bit moist so maybe pick up the watering. I'd say water when the soil is dry 50-75% of the way down. Good luck!
thank you! this was really helpful. i definitely need to increase the humidity for my neanthe bella palm, i think. i have a humidifier that i’m going to start using again! :D
What does your moisture meter read when you water it? My moister meter guide says to water if it is at or below 4 but the soil still feels damp. Also the plant card it came with said to not let the soil dry out between waterings?
I tend to water if its anywhere in the 'DRY' section and that usually feels pretty dry too. I find the cards plants come with are tough to follow as it'll depend on so many different things like the light its getting, the temperature, and the humidity
I don't have this plant, I killed my last palm plant while studying for the bar exam... Have you encountered the scindapsus trebuii dark form? I had to order one from Indonesia on Etsy...
Mine died. On my second now and leaves are dying again. 🤨 moved it to the bathroom, no direct light from the window there, and its a lot warmer in there.
I got a parlor palm like 2 months ago but last week i notice all the tips and some parts of the leaves turned dark brown and some other leaves have like yellow spots. How can i fix that problem 😧
I had to repot my baby bella two times because I couldn’t get the soil to drain and the root ball has been staying dripping wet 😭 My final potting is right back in a nursery pot and she seems happy. She is growing and looks happy. Does that mean I hopefully didn’t hurt her?? My last repot was about 2 days ago. How soon would I see signs of shock? Instinct told me to be super gentle with the roots. I put in new dry soil hoping it would absorb some of the water from the root ball soil (which I left intact). However, I did lightly water it after the repotting was done 🤷🏻♀️
You've done everything I would have done. Keep an eye on her in the next week or 2 but I'm sure she'll be very glad to be back in a comfy place with good soil!
What r the little seed like things that grow from them like leaves? R those seeds can I plant them? This is the first time I've had them grow from my plant I've had it for 5 years it's a very tolerant plant very easy to maintain! U was just wondering about those seed looking thing growing!
Yeah, I have two parlor palms. One is about five foot tall, at 15 years old, the other is about three ft tall at about ten years old. My problem is they need pruned. The old one is so big, it’s like a giant bush. Do I trim the underside, lower branches, or trim the top. I guess it’s not that they are tall, it’s that they have a huge bouquet, for a lack of descriptive words. I need to slim them down. Help? Advice?
hmm that's a tough one! I'd say probs trim from the bottom. Find the stems that are sticking out the most, that you want to remove and cut them as close to the soil as possible. good luck!
I was given a parlour palm (or that's what i was told it was) by a friend who split her huge one down into several plants. its got two fronds, one dies back as another grows. it looks quite sad at the moment, as you said, probably from the root disturbance. its currently in my kitchen, Im now trying to figure out how to create humidity...thanks for a great video! :)
The kitchen is a great place for humidity as it'll raise while you're cooking. Hopefully in time it will recover from the shock and start growing fuller again!

Could you please share with me where you got your plant light… thank you!
I got those ones from amazon. I think the link might be in my storefront
I had to repot my baby bella two times because I couldn’t get the soil to drain and the root ball has been staying dripping wet 😭
My final potting is right back in a nursery pot and she seems happy.
I noticed mine had some brown leaves. But the soil has moisture. Any ideas?
Mine is in a similar spot light but getting brown tips these days. Does anyone know why?
@goodgrowing Do you know if I can grow parlor palm in leca or pon?
I don't see why not! I'm sure they'd love the moisture & humidity
Find the stems that are sticking out the most, that you want to remove and cut them as close to the soil as possible. good luck!
I just bought one last year I leave my by my big window but the leaf keep turning brown now
You’re funny , subscribed hehe
What if it's getting brown and crunchy? That's definitely underwater right ???
sounds like underwater or too low of humidity
I was given a parlour palm (or that's what i was told it was) by a friend who split her huge one down into several plants. its got two fronds, one dies back as another grows. it looks quite sad at the moment, as you said, probably from the root disturbance. its currently in my kitchen, Im now trying to figure out how to create humidity...thanks for a great video! :)
The kitchen is a great place for humidity as it'll raise while you're cooking. Hopefully in time it will recover from the shock and start growing fuller again!
@@GoodGrowing fingers crossed! Thanks 😁
