I like the Shoemon line, because they're conventionally "ugly" until Cendrillmon, mirroring Cinderella's transformation in the fairy tale.

Chaperomon's wolf slippers were fashioned from the data of Fangmon, a Digimon influenced by data of the Big, Bad Wolf. (Correction: It makes slippers out of any wolf Digimon, Fangmon is just its preferred target.)

Fun fact another reason why they're called Shoemon and Shoeshoemon is because there is a digimon called Chuumon (Chuu being the sound a mouse makes like Pikachu) and Chuuchuumon. Which are both digimon that are connected with Poop digimon (also Cendrillmon has some chuchumon like follower digimon too)
I love how casually you can just say "Poop digimon" with plurality and no one needs an explanation.
I did learn recently shoeshoemon is based off a fairytale called The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin which is about a red squirrel who is trying to
Escape from an owl, so there is a through line of fairytales for the whole line and it did help me understand the speed puns it had.
That seals the line up pretty well then! It seemed like the odd one out even though it was the only one that visually aligned with Shoemon.

Annoying language correction time, but it's not Japanese this time, it's French (and how french loanwords ought to and sometimes work in English) instead. Petit and petite are forms of the same word that are used in different contexts. Specifically, because French is a gendered language (every noun is either masculine or feminine, with masculine being the default), petit is the masculine form and petite is the feminine. This is how it works for a lot of words in French. English isn't really gendered, so loanwords usually just pick one. The most often used actual distinction that someone might make in English is with a person; while a man might be blond, a woman would be blonde, if the writer really cares. Only a pedantic prick like me would point out the error if it's made, though.
Then why the original tittle for Little Red Riding Hood is Le Petit Chaperon Rouge? Was the protagonist not a girl in the original? Or do the little refers to the hood this whole time and since a hood is gender neutral, they use the masculine instead (as gendeed languages generally do)?
@@Another_Hibiki As best I can tell and without looking it up cause I'm too lazy to do that, in that title the petit specifically refers to the 'chaperon rouge,' and at a glance 'chaperon' looks like a masculine noun. So it would seem the title is specifically about the hood, or this little girl is so known by her hood that she gets the male adjective treatment when people refer to her by nickname.
But also, if you wanted to say "Red Riding Hood is small" you'd probably say "Chaperon Rouge est petite." But if you wanted to say "Little Red Riding Hood goes..." it's "Petit Chaperon Rouge fait..."

@@infernaldisdain8051 Chaperon is a male noun so it's gonna use a male article in that fairytale title. And no, digimon don't have genders, period. It's not a matter of censorship or kids, firstly because pokemons do instead, and secondly because the anime actually refers to individual digimons as he or she (going against the canon, but that's a dub retcon which sometimes changes based on the language, for example hawkmon in 02 is male in every language except italian and spanish). They just don't because they're artificial digital lifeforms which are either man-made or self reproduced.

Shoemon: based on the little shoemaker, a Croatian fairy tale. While the story is about a little boy, all adaptations portray him as a mouse.
Shoeshoemon: the tale.of squirrel nutkin.
Chaparomon: little red riding hood, written by the french writer charles perrault.
Cendrilmon: cinderella, also written by charles perrault.
This video made me actually appreciate the line in a way that makes sense like I never realized Shoemon is also fairy tale related but it's like every single one is missing one aspect of the others that when combining everything it makes sense but when you focus on one aspect it doesn't

shoemon is a tripple pun because It's "chuu" the onomatopoeia for the sound rodents make, "chu" the onomatopoeia for the sound of kissing and "shoe" because It's in/is a shoe, the way these three things are all brought together is because shoemon is based on Cinderellas helper mice that stich her first dress.

and a clown, and an electric keytar, and a bathing crocodile with a bird resting on it, and a mic stand, and a mariachi, and a DJ deck...
Shit has way too many concepts clashing. They could have just gone for the sugar skull/day of the dead theme OR the musician theme OR the clown theme but they just couldn't help themselves from shitting the bed.

It's the human hair for me. And too much going on in such a small frame. If it was a bigger Digimon, it would be easier to look at but right now my eye doesn't know where to focus on.

If you look at Chaperomon you can see that there's a clear idea and form to it.
When you look at Shoeshoemon it's difficult to tell whether it's got a tail or not, it has random accessories that do not appear on any of the other ones and do not tie into the specific concept of this one either.
It's just messy for the sake of being messy.
Yet the concept is not aided by this messiness.

Actually no. There's a clear purpose behind the accessories and the details. Roller skates? It ties into the shoe theme of the entire line. The safety pin on its ear? Ties into the puppet theme of the line. You can even see that the squirrel fur is actually just a suit, covering its real body. Then there's the pins and arm bands that give it a somewhat asymmetrical look to convey the Digimon's chaotic personality.

I didn’t believe Mitch but apparently Frothy Spit is real. Also its Japanese name literally translates to “Acid Bubble” which is much more tolerable.

It's also worth noting that that particular attack is pretty much reserved for literal "Baby" Digimon that are pretty much harmless even when they _try_ to fight, even if they're only trying to fight a Rookie level Digimon. Most Digimon can just shrug off attacks from baby Digimon without a scratch, so baby Digimon can generally only hold their own against other baby Digimon. Once they reach Rookie level is when they actually become strong enough to be a credible threat.

I will explain the clock laser thing because they at least deserve to know what that means and it takes learning a lot of elements to understand.
Ok, so Cendrillmon lives in a volcano and she uses the volcanic ash to build a glass castle called "Cinderella's Castle", the castle can only be seen in Cendrillmon's cards from the card game, in the center of her castle there's a giant clock and when Cendrillmon wins a battle, she transforms the clock into a laser launcher and finishes the opponent with it.
Again you can only see the clock in Cendrillmon's cards.

As a fan of puppet like digimons, i would rather end the line with another puppet like form, even though Cendrillmon makes sense. Shoeshoemon can go die in a fire, but Shoemon and Chaperomon look real great to me, Chaperomon in specific looking like a female variant of Puppetmon.
The whole line have a theming of fairy tales and shoes. And the knife on Chaperomon's shoe isn't the tongue but it does come out from its mouth.
She also hunts the big bad wolf Digimon to make her shoes. Gotta appreciate how unhinged they make these descriptions :v

"Frothy Spit" is a common attack for Baby/In-Training Digimon; Shoemon is a Rookie.
Genuinely I thought Shoemon was in-training, even if it is very designed for that stage. Plus Shoeshoemon looks like a rookie, Chaperomon passes as a champion, and Cendrilmon could be an ultimate, so I was surprised when the final round was Thunderballmon haha

@@piratefox4563 if my memory is correct, Gatomon IS basically an honorary rookie, but the holy ring on its tail gives it the power of a champion. That’s why it’s called Tailmon in other languages.

The shoemon line is based on fairytales with a footwear motif going from a shoe to cendrillion the tale famous for a woman with glass slippers it's super solid honestly. I also adore Shoemons design it's a mouse in a shoe! The only one in that line I'm not a fan of is shoeshoemon solely because I can't pinpoint or find anyone who can identify the fairy tale association. The others are pretty straightforward being the Shoemaker and the Elves, Chaperon Rouge (little red riding hood), and Cendrillion (Cinderella)
Even then I don't personally dislike shoeshoemon it just has the potential weakest design. Honestly my favorite part of it is the name I really adore shoeshoemon as a name and it is based on how theres an existing pair of mouse digimon called chuumon and chuuchuumon.
Great video though guys I really enjoy all these videos as a fan of just about every franchise you cover and I hope you guys know we all appreciate you!

Digimon differs from Pokemon in that while Pokemon (mostly) evolve with a theme in mind, Digimon can evolve in different paths very radically different from one another cause it depend on the data they absorbed before they reached the evolution point, and unlike Pokemon, they can revert to a previous stage to go into another path, tough thats rarely seen in anime, there are lines that keep a mostly coherent path, like the Greymons, but even then there is a massive change from one to another, their lore is more of the first digimon that became that, and due to the nature of the digital world, the data multiply itself into the rest of the world allowing other digimon to access that form, tough they must have close data that is compatible to evolve into it
The reason it goes from Shoeshoemon to a puppet red riding hood is cause Shoeshoemon wasnt actually a squirrel, if you look closely youll see that its actually a creature inside a squirrel costume, and in Chaperomon it "outgrew" that costume, its also a bit of a similar idea to Gabumon who is actually a yellow like lizard using a wolf pelt that evolves into a wolf creature because it absorbed the data on the wolf pelt, so technically its the story of a creature that manofactured its clothes, starting from a shoe

Wasn't "Chou or Choux" something related to mice in French? I'm not sure... But maybe the Localizers Interpreted it as "Shoe" while Japan failed to adapt "Chou/Choux".

Chou/Choux is a type of pastry, but apparently chou can also mean “poppet”
Looking a little deeper into it: I think the meaning of “poppet” for chou comes from the name of the pastry so its like referring to someone as “cupcake” or “sweetie”, it’s a diminutive term of endearment not a reference to actual puppets. I might ask some actual French people about it tomorrow.

I immediately guessed it was ShoeShoemon cuz if you look at the hair and trace it back to its origin, you'll notice that she's just wearing a costume. Which makes Skate and Squirrel irrelevant. Shoemon was stitched together. There's two shoes now, and a whole costume stitched together. There was only ever one choice. :D

The reason why these fairytales were meshed together is because these are based on Perrault's Fairy tales (hence the french versions) which is the common thread between them. Puss in Boots, Red Riding Hood and Cinderella being the 3 most famous for Shoemon, Chaperomon and Cendrillmon.
ShoeShoemon, no idea but could be Ricky of the tuft which was characterized for being very ugly and having an odd tuft of hair on top.

Had to crack this open to say, first: CANNOT believe you are coming for my girl Shoeshoemon like this smh. If it weren't for a certain other Liberator line recently released, it would probably be my favorite line of the year (yeah I know Shoemon and Shoeshoemon were revealed late last year shhh). I love the fluffy weird horror puppets that Digimon has so many of (and Cendrillmon is slooowly growing on me). I want more mega-level puppet digimon that are just Weird Plushes That Can Kill You (ShinMonzaemon is cool for this).
Also: missed opportunity not reading Chaperomon and Cendrillmon's ref book entries. For those who don't know, Chaperomon hunts wolf digimon to make shoes, and Cendrillmon sends out her little Chuchumon-like army to find suitors and summon them to her volcano battle royale. She's looking for a Prince that can beat her in battle, and you don't get the option of declining your invite, since the glass shoes her familiars hand out *forcibly teleport* the recipient to Battle Royale Castle.
Regarding the theme of the line, if you caught Digimon Con this year, they actually talked about the design inspiration for Shoemon's line! It is, in fact, shoes (surprise)! While I don't know if Shoeshoemon is referencing a specific fairy tale (and I find that disappointing since Shoeshoemon is such a good design aside from my lack of understanding there), Shoeshoemon *does* have those sick kicks. Speaking of, Shoemon's reference book does imply that it can ingest food through the sole mouth. Fun fact for the day. :)

I'm a huge fan of puppet digimon so the entire line was perfect for me. I like Cendrillmon as the mega but I would like to see a dark digivolution that goes full on nightmare mode as well.

I am like 97% sure that Chaperomon's move Mercy Basket is a play on the French word for thank you, 'Merci Beaucoup' (pronounced mercy boo-coo) bc of all the french aspects tied in. Also the reason for all the stitches and stuff is because the full line consists of puppet type digimon
You actually got me thinking about something and I'm gonna hate myself for doing this later. I wonder if there are many Digimon lines that don't deviate from the type it was when it's a rookie. If there's no info on this online I might actually make a personal spreadsheet or something.

I can agree with that. It'd still be patchworked and footwear-based, so it would fit in better if it was also based on a mouse like Shoemon. Unless the squirrel part has to do with the fairy tale it's likely based on.

But the design does not reflect any part of that story,
There's no roller-skates in any European fairytales.
And the design references no elements from Nutkin either,
They could've referenced the tailless Squirrel, but this one has a tail,
They could've referenced the 3 dead mice that were in the story.
Heck they could've just made it wear cat ears and big red rainboots and it would've made more sense.

Don't know if anyone brought it up, but a quick search around French/squirrel/cinderella brings up a supposed mistranslation about her shoes being originally squirrel fur instead of glass. Might not have been true, but it's possible they went with for the puns
Skeledirge looks cool, too, i like that it's a concert stage, plus it's a flaming skeleton crocodile, plus it has a bird like birds puck teeth. Also nice to get another crocodile, especially one with strong obvious elemental ties. Feraligatr and Krookodile aren't as elemental looking. I like when elements, especially on starters, are forefront to the design.

21:19 It shares the fairy tale theme with Cendrillmon and it's a puppet and has the big ol shoes so it fits design-wise with its pre-evos. Outside of that it is kind of a jump to go from Shoeshoemon to that, but creativity is a good thing actually :)

Kekekeke, now we get to another Digimon Quiz. This time we are going after Digimon Liberator stuff. I’ll be honest, I haven’t been following the new stuff too closely, so this will be fun on my part too. If I can dig up some more info, I’ll share it here. It might not be entirely canon explanations, but from what I gathered, there are a variety of interesting things about this squad of Digimon.
From the beginning, alcohol? Yeah ya’ll need this…
Shoemon: I actually really like this thing. It is a Puppet Digimon, which doesn’t have too many representatives in the younger forms, so that was a nice touch. It is based on the mice that helped Cinderella sew her dress. The fact that it is named Shoemon is also funny as Shoe and Chuu are similar, so it references an existing mouse Digimon. As I see from it and the rest of the line, it is fairy tale based. Old Lady that lived in a Shoe and The Elves and the Shoemaker could also be minor inspirations. Could be another one that I am not familiar with. Now… the fun thing is that there is always a chance that due to it being a Puppet Digimon, the actual Digimon might be the shoe!
Note: In early Digimon DS games, they didn’t really wanna give everyone unique attacks. Many super young, freshly hatched digimon have moves that deal with bubbles and spit or escape, so for an offensive attack in those games, they just localized it as Frothy Spit. It's kinda like watching a baby blow bubbles of their own saliva for fun. I do love that if you took the time to grind a literal baby to level 60+ in Dawn/Dusk, they all unlock the Rainbow Spit attack, which actually does a ton of single target damage, especially for Digimon that had Water Boost passives naturally.
Note 2: Digimon usually spells Petit like that. I know… Bandai has never been really good at translations. Cause this isn’t even a Japanese to English thing. In Japanese the attack is Puchi Nidoru or Petite Needle. I am guessing that they realized that Petite can also be spelled Petit if you reference Old French, so they just stuck with it for consistency cause there are moves and Digimon with the term Petit in their name.
ShoeShoemon: Alright, I kinda get you with this one. It… looks like a Sonic OC. I also kinda don’t get it… It is a squirrel that stores things in hyperspace inside its cheeks and can open up its zipper. It is another puppet Digimon, so I can approve of it being something that can be a fursuit worn by a fairy tale tour guide. The human hair underneath makes me think that it might be another human wearing a suit style Puppet Digimon. ShoeShoemon as stated is supposed to be a fun reference to TyuTyumon. So Chuumon > Shoemon and TyuTyumon > ShoeShoemon.
Now to go on a tangent… yes this thing does not fit with the rest of the line. When trying to search things about Squirrels and Cinderella, you get fairy tales like The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin… but that is looser than ya sanity after these quizzes. One interesting thing could be a false rumor that was spread showing that Cinderella was supposed to wear Squirrel Fur Slippers rather than Glass Slippers and that the Glass Slippers were from a translation error because Fur and Glass are very similar in French. Now this is false, but another interesting thing is that originally the slippers were made up of gold, amber or other beautiful materials and that the proof it was her was a ring or some other marker. A fun dive if you are curious. The final thing I can think of is that this thing is a take on Puss in Boots. I’ll elaborate later, but for a basic connection, Puss and Boots and the rest of these Fairy Tale inspirations are known from a French Author, Charles Perrault.
Note 3: On note of Skeledirge… I love his reference to one of the three arts. Skeledirge is Music, Quaquaval is Dance and Meowscarada is Theatre. They are also based on celebrations that happen in areas connected to Spain. Day of the Dead in Mexico, Carnival in the Virgin Islands and Mardi Gras in New Orleans. Skeledirge is also based on the Alebrije which are colorful statues of various animals, including gators. Adding onto the fact that the Sombrero that Crocalor wears is actually a nest with an egg in it that hatches into the firebird, we got something fun there. Heck, do you know Crocodilians actually “sing” to communicate between mother and young? So yeah… with everything around it, Skeledirge’s design is actually quite FIRE! … I’ll throw myself out now.
Chaperomon: Little Red Riding Hood version of a creepy ornamental doll, holding a molotov cocktail and the shredded data of hound and wolf Digimon. This thing is perfectly creepy as ANOTHER Puppet Digimon. The thing’s description is also kinda unnerving. It can move its joints in random directions to creep people out. Its basket is full of candy. Gummi Bear Monzaemon specifically makes it seem childlike… but when it sees a Fangmon, a Digimon based on the Big Bad Wolf… it goes nuts and hunts it down like a dirty dog. It then uses the knife it stores on its person to carve it into a new pair of shoes. She even fits the shoes with knives that can pop out to replace the tongues. The card art even shows that it has a fucking MINIGUN inside its basket. 10/10 this thing is great. This thing also references the poison apple from Snow White, the molotov uses Apple Cider.
Note 4: The French connection is entirely the Fairy Tale theming. Charles Perrault was a French author that is known for compiling the most widely known versions of Puss in Boots, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Bluebeard and Sleeping Beauty. This is why above I stated that ShoeShoemon could have a connection to Puss in Boots, but that is still very very… eh… at best. Speaking of Cinderella…
Cendrillmon: Now this Digimon actually kinda ties things together. The entire line is Fairy Tale and Shoe based. Shoemon starts as a boot, ShoeShoemon… look I have no idea, Chaperomon loves to make wolf slippers and now we have the Fairy Tale that uses the shoe aspect to the max. Cinderella and her Glass Slippers. If you recognize this as something from Persona, they are all based on the same origin. The interesting take on this is that Cendrillmon lives in a volcano to live a quiet life and is a fucking BATTLE MANIAC. She has her army of small TyuTyumon-like spirits drop Glass Slippers all around the world. If you have enough power level and touch it, you are teleported to her castle. She then hold a party known as a “Ball” which is a fucking fighting tournament. If you can best her in battle, you can have her hand in marriage. If you can’t… you die… Let's not forget that volcanic glass does exist, so this is a volcanic glass Cinderella who lives to find a husband through trial by combat. According to the card art, she summons a giant clocktower.
Note 5: Most Mega Digimon kinda lose the design aspects or just hint at previous incarnations. Hence her patchwork bird and patchwork mice army.
Note 6: Funny enough, the Midnight thing was an addition made by the aforementioned Charles Perrault, so many asian versions of the Fairy Tale (which seems to actually be the origin of Cinderella) didn’t have the Midnight and Glass Slipper aspect until Disney (which is super popular in East Asia) popularized it.
Bonus: Oh… Thunderballmon. Yeah he is an oldy. This thing has been around for so long that it has gotten new moves for every game, card and anime appearance it has shown up in. Wikimon usually records all of this for record keeping sake. He was named Thundermon in the Dub, but it soon became Thunderballmon to keep with the JP name. Not much to talk about. It is a pretty basic early Digimon.
As other comments pointed out, petit is simply the masculine form of petite, which is feminine
@@berserkerciaran I am aware. I am coming from a Bandai history sort of way and trying to piece together the JP > EN translation history of the word Petit used in a variety of Digimon moves and names.
Petit Fire: Fire in French is Masculine so that works.
PetitMamon: Mammon the demon is masculine in french.
Peti Meramon: Mera isn’t even a French word.
Then we get to Petit Needle… Needle in French is feminine.
So while the context can be right, Bandai has always just used Petit since it sounds like Puchi, the katakana of the term they are referring to.
While Petit isn’t wrong per say, Bandai never was good nor consistent at localization from the beginning, so I do believe in my theory that they had Gabumon use Puchi Fire, thought the word was nice and used it for other Digimon and when translating it used Petit, not knowing about the French word, but thinking that is how you spelt Petite. They have been using Petit the entire time just for consistency sake.
And I am not shitting on Bandai here. They really do have spotty localizations. An entire term in Cyber Sleuth got messed up with localizers and they translated the word Bakemono to Bakemon… making the characters call things that aren’t Digimon Bakemon… and no one caught that even once through the process. And then we got quizzes where Botamon uses a Shotgun.

I'm perfectly fine with the way the Shoemon line is. It's the first puppet-type line to be used by a human character so at least it gets a theme (fairy tales). Too bad Liberators isn't getting an anime.
