  • Manage to squeeze in some filming on quite a busy but productive day. It was time for annual inspection of all the extinguishers on the ship, it is one of the more labor intensive task for officers, yet vital to safety of the ship.

    Wouldn't it be safer to check each extinguisher at its location? Removing them from their stations renders you vulnerable in case if the fire does occur at the time of inspection.
    A very informative video. Thank you.

      Probably done yearly when the ship is at low risk of fires, like anchored waiting for a canal, delayed, or when very near to land.

      @gmachinegun 7 лет назад +27

      Have you not seen the full video? He went to the bridge right after the inspection, the vessel was in voyage, and I agree with Dark Nebula, I would say it is a dangerous activity to remove any equipment from their location in this situation. Anyway, very interesting video, keep up the good work. H5

      Gilson Guilherme it looked like they didn't take every extinguisher on this ship to one location but did it in sections. So if there was a fire it would still be close by

      Giovanni Tairov Giovanni Tairov Yeah it is a risk to take but, the risk is definitely worth it. Too make sure that they work as intended, the rest of the time. Plus they only removed the foam and powder ones so the co2 where left.

    Your fire extinguisher inspection is much more thorough than at the company I worked for. The guy from the the guy from the extinguisher company would just pick each one up, at the station where it was, trusting his judgement to see if the weight was correct. A new tag, with a date punch and the "inspection" was done. Fortunately, it was good most of the time. We tended to have a lot of small fires often.

    Collecting all the fire extinguishers at once for inspection seems like a bit of a health and safety issue. Typically I would suggest switching to a store of spare-stock that can be inspected and used to replace units of the next batch being inspected so as to never have an extinguisher station sitting without a unit installed.
    As a bonus you get to play a sort of leapfrog game with the fire extinguishers! Inspect the stored units, then swap them with those in test plan Group A, test group A, then swap them with group B, test group B, then swap them to C, etc.

    If this was the Navy, you'd have to get approval from the on board fire marshal, then hold a meeting with all of the other department heads, notify the XO and CO, ensure no hot work is taking place, and no flight ops. Notify DC, and then start your work with whatever manual you're using; and hope a fire doesn't happen.

      +Joe Augustine just look away and make coffee come back 30 min later
      just kidding.. it all comes to experience, im assuming asian fishing traffic because nowhere else in the world has that many fishing vessel. for them...use your visual sight more than radar. we do sometimes pass at 3-4 cables just because its so tight in those area. relying on radar too much will just stress u out, it is best to avoid them using sight (especially at night, just aim for gaps)
