Escort Estates never seen in the wild in Australia, as far as I remember.
Those old estates were great for meeting nurses, as you'd end up in hospital driving one in the wet.

Of course we didn't get the Granada sedans or wagons in Australia, but I did like the look of the Granada GL wagon. I guess the benefit of getting a car which is going to be replaced by a new model is that all the bugs have been sorted out by then.

Family transport in the second half of the 1970s for me was XPC 811N, a white Cortina 1600 XL estate. A reliable workhorse but, even with undercoating, by the early 1980s rust was a very real problem.

There is definitely something about 70s and 80s Fords that I really like.
I imagine as it was that it was the cars I saw the most of growing up.
Ps on another note, Motorweek has a lovely retro Marathon on this weekend with some fantastic old cars being shown

I had a MK1 Ford Escort estate 1100XL which drove really nice and to be honest didn't struggle too much and drove much better than my VW beetle 1200. I also had a MK3 Cortina 1600XL Estate which drove worse than my MK4 2.0GL then I had a Granada MK1 3000XL which was a really nice car to drive.

Although I do like the Escorts very much, my choice would be a Cortina estate but one of the higher trims, probably an XL with a 2 litre engine, for that little bit extra spec.
Regarding the 3-door estates, I also never understood why they were there, but if you look at the competition from other manufacturers at the time i.e. Vauxhall Chevette, Austin allegro, Fiat 128 to name a few, you can notice a trend that most small estates came only as 3-door. So, my educated guess is if you paid more for an estate from a higher-class price, it also meant that you got more doors with it.

The economy 1100 would not have been nice to drive in the escort estate range. Cannot understand why they did not offer a 1600 version which would have suited the car very well ( even with a lower standard of tune for extra low down torque

Hi 👋 im viewing this from New Zealand. We had British Fords here in the 1970s , only the Cortina and Escort saloons were assembled in car plants. The Australian Ford Falcons were on our car market , so we didn't have the Ford Granada. The Granada model is very nice. I can remember seeing one parked in the street back then with GB on the back and thinking to myself what a good car design.

We'd all go for the 2000E estate at a knock down price

Hi Agree, the MK2 Escort estate is a MK1 with a MK2 front end the same with the Escort MK1 and MK2 van.
The Granada MK2 estate is the same as the MK1 just a MK2 front end just like the Escort
The Cortina MK3 estate tail gate is the same as fitted to the MK4 and MK5 .
Great video on the Escort, Cortina and Granada Estates, Take care

The car my parents owned when I was born was a 1974 Cortina XL in signal red (?). I think it was a 2000cc. The wheels were likely replaced at some point: I remember the RoStyle sports wheels which I believe were only available on the 1970-73 GT and GXL models.

My first car at 17 was a '71 Mk3 Cortina saloon. 1300 engine, just as well, I probably would have killed myself in anything faster!
It would have to have been a Granada estate for me. Always had a soft spot for the Mk1. I loved the Mk4 Zephyr/Zodiac, but the Granada, was light years ahead. Ford got away with murder on the Mk2 estate. A different dashboard and front end, and it was supposed to have been new. And yes, a three door estate is plain weird. Thanks as ever, always enjoy.

Totally agree with the mk2 escort, it's a mk1 face-lift. 3 door completely impractical for families and squeezing adults in and out .the vauxhall viva HB and HC were the same.

I feel like I want to buy a Ford estate 1976 right now. Great marketing and wonderful motor cars. Thank you for making it possible. Cheers from Denmark.

I woud choose Granada 3.0 GL but i guess it would be to expensive for mee.
But i like comfort and a smooth running V6 not necerrsally the power but the sound and smoothness, so i would problally choose 2.5 L
And i would choose white with beige interior, and sunroof if thats possible.
Bur sure i would waited 1 year and get the much nicer facelift verisjon, and i could take a 2.3 who woud fit mee perfect!
( sorry for my bad English but i am from Europe, and i drank 6 beers also..

The Cortina mk 4 came somewhat later than the Taunus TC 2, I believe. So customers in Britain knew what the new model would look like. If It was worth waiting for. My paretns bought a new 1977 Taunus 1.6 GL, 2-door, bronze metallic.

Shame the MK1 Granada wasn't specced like 3.0 GXL, 3000E, or 3.0 Ghia estate would have been nice at the time, but I guess with the new model around the corner, Ford didn't see the need.

Another fab vid, good to see all the comments being made, some of the info people are adding I knew, but some I didn’t, that’s what’s making your channel so interesting. I was always of the opinion that the MK2 Granada Estate was a new design with the old MK1 rear end grafted on but who knows, perhaps there was a lot more MK1 in it than I was aware of ! Great work.😊

Mk 1 escort roofline more aero dynamic, higher top speed.

Everything from Ford in the seventies looked good apart from anything painted Highland Green; a truly horrible colour usually inflicted on base model mk2 Granadas.
