I'm sure you've already heard it a million times but the enemy of ice in the ice chest is air, the reason the Cabela's did better was because it had the advantage of not having to keep the airspace cold. I have the same Cabela's and the same rtic and they both hold roughly the same amount of time as long as they are both packed full. I have gotten 11 days out of the rtic in central California with 90-110 temps by dropping the rtic in my deep freezer for 2 days before my trip and limiting time with the kids open. Very impressive for $150

It's all about energy capacity and energy transfer. The heat capacity of the air in the coolers is negligible (just think how low the mass is) so trapping more air has no impact. The correct way to do the test is to start with the same weight of ice, just like you did. The difference in the coolers is the surface area. The larger coolers have a larger surface area, which potentially allows more energy (heat) transfer from the outside to the inside. The smaller cooler does have this advantage. To be perfectly equal, the coolers would have to be the same size. Never the less, this was a good test. Thanks for taking time to do it.
Sweat on the outside of a cooler will occur if the surface temperature is low enough to allow water in the air to condense. That would indicate areas on the cooler that are not insulated or sealed properly.

Thanks for taking the time to do these videos. By the way, my friend bought that Lifetime cooler and the blue plastic part on the lid lock-down some how warped. Maybe from direct sunlight? Who knows, but now it will not keep the lid closed tight on that side.

Good video. I've got the same coolers just different sizes and the Rtic and lifetime are quite impressive for there cost and how tight u can pack them in a boat of vehicle. Keeping airspace to a minimum seems to make them both last longer.
Something that the reviews always seem to forget is that a larger interior will contain more warm air that needs to be chilled by the ice. So if the same amount of ice is used in every cooler, but they have different sized interiors, then the larger one will transfer more heat to the ice, thus melt quicker (all other things being equal). So for a true test, the ratio of ice to size of interior should be consistent.
I just ordered a 65 Yeti that I will put up against this and my 85 Cabela's. I will have them all full to capacity.

Great video! We've got the Rtic for food and a wheeled Lifetime for drinks. Both retain ice long enough for a weekend camping trip, cookouts, trips to the beach. The rotomolded coolers are just too expensive and heavy imho. For our needs they're just overkill

Good video that was helpful. Sorry to point out you could have saved a lot of time with taking the beer temp! They are all so close in temp because if there is ice present, then each cooler is the same temp. For example, if you want to calibrate a cooking thermometer, put ice in water and stir. Then when you check the temperature, it should say 32.

Good video…I think these kind of tests are rough to keep things fair, because they’re all different sizes and the descriptions are deceiving on some…good on RTIC for listing the actual volume. I watched your newer Yeti vs RTIC test…impressive. Did you ever figure out the drain plug issue? I don’t think I heard you mention that on the newer review.
It just needs to be tight.

I have two cabelas chests now and they in my opinion are the best. I just like the way they are built. But for the money this RTIC is tough to beat.
You used the Rtic Ultra light over their regular 45qt rotomold cooler.
Though ultimately I’d pick the lifetime just because it’s made in USA. That’s unless I could find a good rotomold that’s made in the USA 🇺🇸. (NO YETI though they are still over priced)
Great video. I want to get the rtic 52 quart cooler. But I’ve read a lot of reviews about them leaking water. Does yours leak a lot?
Not as long as the drain is tight.
Thanks for doing this for us. It would be nice to see the RTIC 52 Ultralight against their rotomolded 45 or 65. I noticed there's only about 1" in insulation on the sides by where the handles are located on the one that I purchased, which gives me a little pause.
FYI, measuring the paper label's surface temperature does not really give you the temperature of the liquid in the beer.
I measured the paper because the glass can refract the infrared light coming from it causing it to be less than accurate. So I did think about it 😆 I did a ice retionsion test with it and a Yeti 65 addressing the issues you mentioned. Check it out.

I think if you filled the rtic completely full of ice like you did the cabelas, it would of had ice left over, I think headspace of warm air plays a big role at the beginning.
I'm curious how the capacity affected the melt rate of each cooler since they all have the same amount of ice in them. Clearly it is ideal to start with a cooler full of ice so there is about the same amount of warm air added every time you open it, but with the extra ice mass the bigger coolers, I imagine that would increase the melt time as well. You could do a test where you completely fill up all the coolers to max capacity and see what they are capable of. Weigh them each when they are full. The RTIC did well enough in this one that I will buy one. Thanks for the video.
I will do another one soon where I fill them all to full capacity. I just bought a Yeti 65 witch is 52 quarts. I will see how the RTIC holds up.

Here's a very specific question for you that I'm hoping you might have some advice on. I'm driving 14 hours from Oklahoma to South Carolina to visit family for Thanksgiving and my hope is to brine a turkey that I'm going to smoke. I'll be leaving Friday and want to cook the bird on Wednesday morning so I'm thinking I can put a frozen turkey in a bag with a cold brine, tie it up and put it in the cooler and top with ice on Friday and leave it in until Tuesday. By then do you think it will have thawed enough that I can put in the fridge or add more ice to keep it safe on Tuesday night? I have a rotomolded 20qt cooler but I'm considering getting the RTIC 52 just for this purpose because I don't see a turkey fitting in my 20qt with enough room for brine and ice to keep it safely cold.
I think if you put a frozen turkey with no ice you will be fine. When it thaws just add ice to keep it good if u have too.
Omg I was right I knew it. My father in-law is from Louisiana.
I got a smaller Lifetime chest a few years back. When I go camping I fill it the night before with frozen water bottles. Those bottles will stay frozen in the chest for 4 days whole being able to take things in and out consistently.
Looking into getting the RTIC one for my bigger chest.

Fun video. I have a 45 rtic, 52 ozark trail and a 125 yeti. They all work well but dollar for dollar the rtic is the best one for sure. I wonder how a roto molded rtic would do vs cabelas?

As far as I'm aware , the 45 rtic is roto molded which is why its heavier than the 52 rtic
Visually I like the lifetime as it has way more capacity yet about the same size as others. I’d really like to see the same test all filled with ice if u ever get a chance

Hey Corey.. Hopefully I can get an answer back soon as possible. Idk if you have had or tested a rtic rotomold (45/65), I was wondering if its as good being its injected molded, but would like your take on a 45/65 vs a 52. Most I'll be using it for is about 6 guys day drinking. I also saw Kong cooler and thought it was great but too expensive for for the size. Any takes on rtic vs kong.
I personally don't have one, but I have a few rotomolded coolers and the will much more than sufficient for day drinking or week long drinking!

That it is. Only thing I was hoping for otherwise with all the accessories they have built into it was a bottle opener built into it. Thats an easy fix tho with some webbing and the tie down slots
Something people should consider is that all of these coolers would perform much worse if they had food or drinks inside taking up space because you would not be able to fit 40 lbs of ice inside around the items you are placing inside. If you're just storing ice to use for something else, then I suppose that would make sense.
The matrix of performance would change considerably if you added - say, 24 bottles of that beer - and filled the rest of the cooler with ice. The Cabelas on the left would not be able to hold very much ice at all (and therefore not last very long), and the larger coolers would be able to hold much more ice.
I agree that a cooler with food or beer will not stay cold as long, but with or without food there performance shud be linear.
@@EverydayManI don’t think he was saying their performance wouldn’t necessarily be linear, I think what they were referencing was that depending on how much food and other things you put in them you limit ice capacity. You’d have to do some math to figure out, based on interior volume, what a comparable amount of food/drink would be per cooler for a linear test. Now you could test what you would take on an average weekend camping trip, put it in each, put whatever ice will fit and see the results. That’s more real world than scientific. So the roto molded with the smaller interior volume would hold less ice than say the RTIC, with the same number of drinks or whatever, but would it’s construction make up for the lack of starting ice?
I'll say what others are saying but more constructively.
I understand your choice to do the same amount of ice in each one but to truly see the potential you'd need to fill each all the way up. Same idea as if you were testing a thermos type container.
For another type of test, you might also consider leaving them closed for say, 5 days, then draining the water off. The one with the highest percentage of water loses.
I'd like to see one of these tests with charged coolers.

Thanks for the test! taking the results with a bit of salt. I imagine if all of the chests had been filled as full as the Cabelas with ice they would have performed better. A more event test would have been for each cooler to have the same percent capacity of ice (all coolers 75% full), instead of one chest completely full and others partially full. Have been considering the RTIC so I am glad to see how it held up.

the more open area inside the cooler the more it will lose performance. That is why packing the cooler is so important.
@@EverydayMan All with equal ice, but unequal internal capacity. The Cabelas was 100% filled with ice while the Lifetime and Rtic were probably filled to around 70%. Your test was meaningless other than to show some potential issues like condensation at the lids and drain ports.

Any updates on that drain plug leak on the RTIC?
I tightened it more. It stopped leaking.
I am an adventure guide and routine use the 100 and 40 quart Cabela's coolers on my 100 mile/7-10 day Allagash canoe trips...they hold ice for the whole trip, but.....they are HEAVY and EXPENSIVE...I was looking into the RTICs to reduce weight and cost. I think I might switch over...thoughts?
I have both and the Rtic is lighter. It hold ice for a long time. I would go with the rtic for weight savings and cost.
On your RTIC 52 do you have problems with condensation coming from the drain ports?
P.s. did you figure out how to stop the slow leak, condensation from the drain port? Mine has had that problem as well. Any tips would be much appreciated

I got my rtic 52 in today and the kid doesn’t shut all the way unless handles are latched. Doesn’t look like it seals all the way!!! Any help?

I'd say if you ever do this again do it in direct sun cause 99% of people will use this this way. Beach, boat etc. This way we know which last longest
