Agreed. I'm a hardcore fan of Castlevania: SOTN and I gotta admit that even Bloodstained (made by the same guy) can't match Blasphemous'. Precise, immersive, well balanced, filled with unlocks and secrets... Really a masterpiece.
Blasphemous has abilities you get, just because you need to equip a relic does not mean they aren't abilities. Those abilities let you access areas of the map you can't otherwise.
It seems to have gone under the radar for most people, but Strider actually has a modern take on the Metroidvania genre. It has the floaty acrobatic controls and fast paced action we all know and love from the classic Strider games but in an open explorable map. It's kinda weird that most people don't mention it since Strider used to be a very popular Capcom franchise, and the character is even featured in Marvel vs Capcom 2 and 3.
Timespinner was one of the best metroidvanias I've ever played, so addicted, just wish it had been longer. Story and combat was amazing, never got tired of it at all. Salt and Sanctuary is another epic game, great Soulsbourne Metroidvania.
Im surprised no one says Guacamelee 2, the ambience the music creates is just stunning. Playing ori and the blind forest atm but it just doesnt suck me into the world so far despite the pretty and smooth animation :(
Great list! I think my favorites here are tied between Bloodstained and Steamworld. The newest Strider release ("newest" being 2014) had a lot of Metroidvania elements also. Personally I think it's a great time and worth downloading, especially since it's usually on sale for really cheap now.
Great breakdown of the Metroidvania genre. I really enjoyed the video. I liked how it wasn't platform specific, it wasn't just recently released titles, you included the length of each game and what you did and didn't like about each title. Thanks
Correction: Microsoft did not acquire Moon Studios, just published Ori and acquired its distribution rights. Blasphemous is great, but I didn't play it until after I made this video. If you make your way over to my community tab (ruclips.net/user/Cannotbetamed1community) I've compiled a list of the games that have been recommended in the comments. Also, Dead Cells is not a Metroidvania.
they don't own the IP either. Microsoft doesn’t own the IP or Moon Studios; however, Microsoft does own the distribution rights to the franchise. Unfortunately, this means that as long as Microsoft owns those distribution rights to the franchise, an Ori and The Blind Forest PS4 version is not going to ever happen. Is a little tricky to figure this out because in their website it says that in 2011 Moon Studio's became a Microsoft First party Studio. I guess what that means is that you not gonna see any Moon studio games in a Sony Platform and they strictly working for Microsoft only
Favian Minecraft is a world phenomenon type of game and the money that franchise generate is massive and that’s why Microsoft won’t make it exclusive to Xbox and rather multi platform. It will be hundreds of millions mistake if they have it only for Xbox. Microsoft wants that money and that’s why is in PS and Nintendo
I'm still shocked at what such a small team could produce with Hollow Knight. And Ori...*chef's kiss* What an amazing overall package. There's still a bunch I need to hop on sometime soon.
Well, hello there. I would recommend Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. A more puzzle heavy and quite long metroidvania with a cute style and a lot of heart. Played through it not long ago and enjoyed it greatly.
You are so good at this and have a unique set of gifts; would be surprised if you don't get approached by some media company wanting to hire you at some point.
Glad you made this list been really getting into these games lately , and was watching various youtubers lists. I'm playing Bloodstained right now, but it's taking me a lot longer then 15 hours lol.
Although in 3D, some good examples of AAA Metroidvanias are the first entries on the Batman Arkham and Tomb Raider reboot series. Also, I would recommend Dandara, Metroidvania with the innovation of only being able to traverse the world launching from select points in the map.
I wouldn't really count Dead Cells personally. It doesn't really do what Metroidvanias expect of you - that is, making a mental map of a connected world. You do grab a few upgrades along the way, but they are only relevant on the NEXT playthrough - so you rarely have to remember "Oh yeah, I can use this in this room I visited!"
Nice selection. I'd add Monster Tale, a late NDS release. Also Monster World IV for classic Sega Genesis. Not specifically a metroid-vania, but a retro platform based adventure with some backtracking and rpg components
I'm glad Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is on this list..it definitely is like a love letter to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and hopefully it gets another sequel of this caliber..Hollow Knight was an awesome game but for me I struggled and couldn't get past the last boss no matter what I did or how many times I tried..definitely a challenging game..great list regardless
Great video! Metroidvania are my favourite games and i've played almost everyone you mentioned in this video! I highly recommend to also give a try to monster boy. Its the spiritual successor of the old wonderboy saga and i think its one of the best metroidvania out there!
Yes! I loved Iconoclasts! And I was one of those geeks who had played the old "Ivory Springs" demo and waited like 7 years for the full game lol. The story is pretty weird but the art style is wonderful and there are some great boss fights, including 2 hidden bosses.
I highly recommend Blasphemous. It's got some Souls-like elements and its story has allot of religious, particularly Catholic, themes running through out it.
I played the intro of Blasphemous very recently and the game felt too slow and, of course, tryhard as hell. It's the hollow knight issue, after you play HK every other metroidvania looks puny in comparison. I need more time to "forget" HK before trying other metroids
Great job on this video. Thank you for recognizing Shadow Complex as many reviewers don’t give it the attention that it deserves. A couple of other great metroidvanias include Guacamelee (1 & 2) and The Messenger.
Oh this was just perfectly timed, thanks Pam! This is a genre I never used to enjoy, until I played Axiom Verge, which got my completely hooked. I then went back and finished the original Super Metroid - and had a blast. Spent a lot of time trying to find the next ones to play. I really appreciate that you told us how long each takes to beat - this is something I think carefully about these days!
I just got Timespinner for Switch at Best Buy the other day. Solid game so far. Did not know the Familiar could be controlled by Player 2. Glad I clicked on the vid.
Ooooh, smoothe. And I´m late to the recommendations but +1 to: Cave Story ( the game that started the indie metroidvania craze ), La Mulana 1&2 ( tough as nail hardcore, old school experience ; MSX style old school) and Robot named Fight. And there is Gato Roboto, also on the shorter side of time needed to complete.
I recommend "Dust: An Elysian Tail". you discover more and more about the protagonist and there's an incredible plot twist. The backgrounds and the side quests are amazing!
Great list. Another promising metroidvania is Record of lodoss war deedlit in wonder labyrinth. Very Symphony of the night like and currently only available as early access.
Axiom verge interested me when the developer went on record saying there are still things ppl haven't discovered in it.also guacamelee have to include that. Great job!
Blasphemous, SuperEpic, Guacamelee, Bookbound Brigade, Finding Teddy, Momodora, Iconoclast, Owlboy, Teslagrad, Yoku´s Island Express... there are a lot of metroidvania style games to play, its a great genre.
Got two if they weren't already mentioned: Chasm if you want something like Timespinner/SOTN. If you want Dark Souls as a metroidvania: Salt & Sanctuary. 👍
It is a crime that no one mentions it and it is FAAAR more superior than a lot of Metroidvania RUclipsrs keep pushing out there. I almost missed it because of this. It was my friend that told me about it and after playing it I was like, why is nobody talking about this awesome game? Seriously this is one of the best MV's out there.
I really had no interest at first in Steamworld Dig up until this video because the way you're describing it and seeing that gameplay definitely seems something up my alley with the upgrading system, thanks! For the most part I've already played most of these and it's really great that you're promoting them especially Bloodstained and Song of the Deep. As for other Metroidvanias, not sure if you've played it but I recommend the 2014 game Strider, that was one I beat last year and found surprising; it's gameplay is easy to get into, the boss battles are pretty fun, and it's short. Other than that, great vid like usual!
Very cool video, and a great list. I'll definitely have to check some of these out. I've gotta say, I'm really surprised that I haven't seen anyone mention "Dandara". That's a beautiful and enchanting game. In my opinion anyway. But it never gets brought up.
I definitely recommend "Black Tiger" - it's an arcade release but was on PS3/XB360 Capcom Arcade Cabinet and Capcom Classics Collection # 2 on PS2 and Xbox. It's a little unforgiving to new players with some cheap 1-hit deaths from falling rocks that need to be memorized...but after you overcome that, it's an amazing game.
Blasphemous was pretty solid Loved Bloodstained There’s still a lot of fresh/unique ground to cover in this space, so I’m excited to see so many indie devs making them.
I am sure you're getting a million recommendations, but please look at La-Mulana (2012 remaster). It's a very different take on metroidvania, and there's a lot of reading and puzzle solving and nonlinear thinking, but it's without a doubt one of the most brilliant pieces of design I've ever encountered.
I love Metroidvanias! Probably my favorite genre along with 3rd person action-adventures. So glad you gave Hollow Knight another go. Fantastic suggestions! The Shantae series are always my first recommendations. I think I recall you not enjoying Half-Genie Hero, but Pirate's Curse is the best of the series (though not exactly a Metroidvania). Risky's Revenge and Seven Sirens are though! Rabi-Ribi, Minoria, Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight, Touhou Luna Nights, and Iconoclasts would be other suggestions off the top of my head.
Guacameleé is another recommendation in my opinion. Its combo based melee battle system is really fun, and the graphics are colorful. Also, it's not that often you play as a luchadore.
Apparently this isn't a widely-held opinion. I guess a lot of people out there just don't like pinball as much as I do but I think they did an amazing job blending pinball mechanics with a cute/goofy story-driven MV game. I want few things more than a full-size sequel to Yoku (maybe Silksong).
@@Ichthyodactyl I actually have very little interest in pinball overall, but I love the game and found the pinbal mechanics were fun to play around with in this setting.
I'm playing through Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night right now. Really like it. For a couple of other enjoyable Metroidvanias, I recommend Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight and Rabi-Ribi. I loved Momodora's delightful brand of bleak cuteness, and Rabi-Ribi adds some bullet hell mechanics to the gameplay, but doesn't make you feel like it's unplayable. Also, Iconoclasts is a fine game, but I just had a really hard time getting into the story for some reason.
As a huge Castlevania SOTN fan and fan of retro games mostly, I was very impressed and had a great time playing Ori and Timespinner, I highly recommend these they feel so magical. I am pretty picky when it comes to games now
I love that Metroidvania is a genre now, Merging the elements of 2 classic games! Bloodstained is probably the most well known but The Mummy Demastered is cool, Kind of like Contra too! Metroidcontravania
Reminds me a lot of the Universal Soldier game which was like metroid/contra/Castlevania hybrid. Edit: so it turns out that Universal Soldier was a rebrand of Turrican 2
Great list w/ lots of variety. I feel it's a great list to experience the genre w/ variety in visual styles and mechanics (even if some I did not fully enjoy). I like that you give a quick, but detailed and thorough synopsis of each game - especially the hours to beat! MV is my favorite genre most likely. All the games on the list I've either played (6), own but have to play (2), or have been on my wishlist for as long as I can remember (2). One thing about the genre is I wish ppl would start using the term "MV-lite" (akin to "roguelites") for games that are like MV's but not quite truly MVs. Imo, a "true" MV, the exploration, backtracking, etc is mandatory to progress. A lot of games ppl call "MVs", it's actually just optional. I do agree w/ your definition of having a single, large sprawling map, but I'm slowly opening up to the idea of segmented maps where backtracking to those separate maps is still mandatory like in Omega Strike and Valdis Story (even if minimal), or even a few separate mini-MV-maps like in MindSeize.
Some titles I can also recommend :) - Alwa's Awakening & Alwa's Legacy - Apotheon - Child of Light - Dex - Giga Wrecker - Guacamelee 1 & 2 - Hob - Mages of Mystralia - Minoria - Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom - Owlboy - Pharaoh Rebirth+ - Rabi-Ribi - Shantae series - Sundered - The Messenger - Wings of Vi
I'll second Alwa's Awakening/Legacy. Just finished both of them and had a great time! More exploration heavy than combat, plenty of secrets, and some challenges that really force you to think about how you navigate the world.
@@JoshuaSRobinson then I think that Giga Wrecker, Hob and Mages of Mystralia will be also to your liking. Besides fighting there is much accent on exploration and creative thinking ;)
One of the most under rated and forgotten metroidvania is *'Valdis Story: Abyssal City'*. It blew my mind. The game is one of, if not the best metroidvania i ever played. Everyone should give it a shot. It's pretty cheap too. If you want a good game go for it you will thank me later. ^-^ Great video has always thanks for the nice presentation! Have a good day.
Agreed Valdis Story is amazing. It doesn't reach the level of polish of a masterpiece like Hollow Knight but it's just such a unique blend of mechanics all executed very well.
@@mobileore It could use a bit of polish. But it does not remove anything from the experience. It's just overall a great game. I love hollow knight but it feels to me more like a souls game more than anything else. But good observation good sir. ^-^
I'd really have to suggest Gato Roboto. It's a short and sweet MV where you control a cat in a mech suit. It is surprisingly fun and quirky, and really stands out as an interesting experience. There's a fair amount of things to collect and some really fun bosses. Also the GameBoy style graphics are really well done.
Wonderful list, Pam!! I had no idea Mummy Demastered was such a complete game. I assumed it was a simple, mobile-style time killer. As a lover of Metroidvania games, thanks for correcting my false assumptions.
Some of the metroidvania games I've enjoyed on my PS4 Pro that didn't make it on this videos list are: Guacamelee 1 and 2 Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom Wonderboy the Dragon's Trap Dust: An Elysian Tail Strider (2014) Owlboy
Some other Metroidvania games I highly recommend are Guacamelee and Sundered, those are fantastic games too and are worth checking out. They're no Ori, Hollow Knight, or Bloodstained, but they deserve some love too. Also thanks for including the 3 on your list, I honestly think they're not only the best Metroidvania games to ever exist but quite possibly the BEST games to ever exist!
I'd say Guacamelee is a superior medtroidvania than Ori & the Blind Forest (I haven't played Sundered). Whilst Ori is a good platformer, I never had to pause to work out where to go next and 100 percenting it was a breeze. With Guacamelee, once you get to the point of no return, you have a symbol on your map showing that you've still got one ability to unlock, and are just left to work out how to get it for yourself by exploring all the areas of the map you previously couldn't access. Combine that with the fact that you have 2 boost moves that speed up transport and you have a really well designed metroidvania. Too bad the sequel wasn't as much fun.
@@r3cycledPl4stic I thought that unlocking abilities was as easy as it was in Ori where all you need to do is progress through the game to get those. Unless you meant using abilities to travel and discover new areas in the map or something to become stronger. Either way I still find Ori the far more superior one mainly because while Guacamelee looks good and has a decent soundtrack (and the gameplay is fantastic as well), I personally find Ori and Hollow Knight to do those things much better. Doesn't take away from Guacamelee, just preference. Also Sundered is a pretty good game and you'd probably like it if you like Guacamelee. And I agree that Guacamelee 2 was pretty disappointing in a way but I still thought it was fun. The soundtrack of Los Manglares is pretty fucking amazing though.
@@havoren Unlocking the main abilities were as easy as in Ori, but the the optional final ability was something you could only do if you could be bothered to go back and re-explore previous areas with the new skills.
Monster Boy is one of the best sadly it is slept on and because of this, it took me a long time to get to it. Monster Boy and Dust: AET are waaaaaay better than Timespinner. Chasm is ok. Just completed it recently but it has its moments to be honest though it's on the same level as Time Spinner for me.
As a massive Castlevania fan, I absolutely HAD to click on this video! Good list from what I can see and seriously THANK YOU for including Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night! I love the Castlevania series so much that it has a big influence on my music composition throughout the multiple genres I compose in.
I still recommend that people play the procedural metroidvania done right, A Robot Named Fight. Honestly, it has prevented me from playing some other metroidvanias in my backlog I was really looking forward to. It's always so tempting to just generate another enjoyable
I wasn't aware of your channel until a few minutes ago when 'METROIDVANIA' caught my eye. I live for these. And then mentioning SOTN straight away?! Gooood stuff. Even though it was released as I was leaving college, SOTN quickly became a beloved favorite. I still play it regularly, heh. (I'll need to check out some of the newer offerings you highlighted, but I typically stick with handhelds only in recent years....)
There's an NES game I use to play as kid, and recently played emulated, called Uforia. It's a very rudimentary form of a metroidvania game but generally fits the bill. You should do a retrogame episode on it. I loved it.
I checked out a video of it, thought it looked cool, gave your comment a like and got a (repro) copy of the game. It was short, beat it in a couple days, but it was loads of fun and very impressive for an NES title. I'm really glad to have it in my collection now. Great recommendation!

Perfect time for this video. Metroidvanias have become my favorite video game genre. Even more so than modern games. Loved Bloodstained, and was looking for something else, now that I have completed it. Timespinner seems like a great alternative. Thanks for the video. PS: Give DeadCells a try!
I backed Bloodstained and I will never regret it. Sure it's not perfect, but they really tried to make it something that honored SOTN but added to it. For the most part, they succeeded, and I am proud of what it became.
@@Cannotbetamed1 Me too! Though I had to wait several weeks or months for the fibal achievement to be patched. And I agree heavily that they put too much of some things into it.

I definitely want a spiritual successor to Shadow Complex that's not connected to Card's work in any way but follows the gameplay and style.
That would be great
I was going to comment about separating art from artist about Shadow Complex right when she said it.
@@Cannotbetamed1 Nailed it on Card. I didn't know about his politics when I first played the game. Now I can't even...
You people need to learn about separating art from artist
Damn, Timespinner looks rad!
It is! It was a nice surprise.
@@Cannotbetamed1 No issues with the forced narrative that has nothing to do with the story?
@Derek St. Pierre Narrative and story are the same thing so, no.

Strider (2014), an updated version of a classic, is pretty good (at least in my opinion). It took the original game and made it into a metroidvania. 🤣
I agree! Strider 2014 is a super fun metrodvania. It's very fast paced. It never lets up.
Ori and the will of the wisp is the best metroidvania I've played, and just one of the best games I have played in general.
This channel is great. Metroidvanias got me through many frustrating Covid lockdowns.
Timespinner was one of the best metroidvanias I've ever played, so addicted, just wish it had been longer. Story and combat was amazing, never got tired of it at all.
Salt and Sanctuary is another epic game, great Soulsbourne Metroidvania.
Salt and Sanctuary would be amazing if it had a map, that's my only real complaint about it.
Im surprised no one says Guacamelee 2, the ambience the music creates is just stunning. Playing ori and the blind forest atm but it just doesnt suck me into the world so far despite the pretty and smooth animation :(
Hey, great list! There were a few I had never heard of, I’m excited to try out Timespinner.
Hope you enjoy it!
4:17 I think Aquaria also deserves a mention if you like Underwater Metroidvanias.
Agreed, it is another gem for sure.
Great list! I think my favorites here are tied between Bloodstained and Steamworld. The newest Strider release ("newest" being 2014) had a lot of Metroidvania elements also. Personally I think it's a great time and worth downloading, especially since it's usually on sale for really cheap now.
I'll check it out
Great breakdown of the Metroidvania genre. I really enjoyed the video. I liked how it wasn't platform specific, it wasn't just recently released titles, you included the length of each game and what you did and didn't like about each title. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
Dead Cells sucks
they don't own the IP either.
I'm just going to copy this Metroidvania list and add it to my Steam Wish list. Also, very curious to hear your thoughts on Touhou: Luna Knights.
Great list, thanks for the inspiration. I would also recommend The Messenger.
No problem! I liked The Messenger as a platformer, but I didn’t think it handled being a Metroidvania that well.
Cannot be Tamed thanks for the reply, as soon as I’ve finished all the games on your list I probably share your opinion 😊
Check out wallachia. It's like Shinobi 3.
I'm still shocked at what such a small team could produce with Hollow Knight. And Ori...*chef's kiss* What an amazing overall package. There's still a bunch I need to hop on sometime soon.
Hollow Knight is not only super polished and fun but it’s also a very big game, there’s so much content. It is impressive.
Microsoft is being a meany-pants and not releasing the Ori sequel onto switch. :(
Well, hello there. I would recommend Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. A more puzzle heavy and quite long metroidvania with a cute style and a lot of heart. Played through it not long ago and enjoyed it greatly.
I was wondering if I was going to find a comment suggesting this one! I loved it.
Thank you for that one, it looks so great, added it to my wishlist right now :)
You are so good at this and have a unique set of gifts; would be surprised if you don't get approached by some media company wanting to hire you at some point.
Aww, thanks :)
Glad you made this list been really getting into these games lately , and was watching various youtubers lists. I'm playing Bloodstained right now, but it's taking me a lot longer then 15 hours lol.
I love Axiom Verge, replayed it earlier this year. Can't wait for part 2! Also, Shadow Complex looks really cool.
Shadow Complex is definitely interesting.
Although in 3D, some good examples of AAA Metroidvanias are the first entries on the Batman Arkham and Tomb Raider reboot series.
Also, I would recommend Dandara, Metroidvania with the innovation of only being able to traverse the world launching from select points in the map.
Salt and Sanctuary and Dead Cells are pretty good. Highly recommend them.
@@craw4863 Yes I did enjoy it. The mechanics remind me of Dark Souls, but not as punishing.
I love Hollow Knighy and Blasphemous. Been wanting to pull the trigger on Salt and Sanctuary for a while now
I wouldn't really count Dead Cells personally. It doesn't really do what Metroidvanias expect of you - that is, making a mental map of a connected world. You do grab a few upgrades along the way, but they are only relevant on the NEXT playthrough - so you rarely have to remember "Oh yeah, I can use this in this room I visited!"
Hands down... This is the best list of Metroidvania's I have ever found! Thank you for this!
You're welcome
Nice selection. I'd add Monster Tale, a late NDS release. Also Monster World IV for classic Sega Genesis. Not specifically a metroid-vania, but a retro platform based adventure with some backtracking and rpg components
These are cool stuffs! Many of them that I’ve never heard of!!! I’ll definitely check some out. Thanks!
I heard one was announced. But nothing after that.
Great video! Metroidvania are my favourite games and i've played almost everyone you mentioned in this video! I highly recommend to also give a try to monster boy. Its the spiritual successor of the old wonderboy saga and i think its one of the best metroidvania out there!
Cool, I'll take a look at it
Iconoclasts!!
It’s more of a puzzle platformer than an action game, but it’s really fun!
Yes! I loved Iconoclasts! And I was one of those geeks who had played the old "Ivory Springs" demo and waited like 7 years for the full game lol. The story is pretty weird but the art style is wonderful and there are some great boss fights, including 2 hidden bosses.
I'm glad that the spirit of Castlevania lives on in these indie gems. I hope to play each and every one of them eventually.
I highly recommend Blasphemous. It's got some Souls-like elements and its story has allot of religious, particularly Catholic, themes running through out it.
Try salt and sanctuary, it's even better (in my opinion of course)
I played the intro of Blasphemous very recently and the game felt too slow and, of course, tryhard as hell. It's the hollow knight issue, after you play HK every other metroidvania looks puny in comparison. I need more time to "forget" HK before trying other metroids
Great job on this video. Thank you for recognizing Shadow Complex as many reviewers don’t give it the attention that it deserves. A couple of other great metroidvanias include Guacamelee (1 & 2) and The Messenger.
Thanks!
I always like knowing how long a game will be. Hollow Knight was very long for a game of this type, but somehow I didn't mind.
Cave story was good.
La Mulana is amazing. Very challenging.
Wow, thanks a lot for this video! Recently have become obsessed with filling my switch with metroidvanias, and I learnt about some great games here !
Glad to be helpful!
I recommend "Dust: An Elysian Tail". you discover more and more about the protagonist and there's an incredible plot twist. The backgrounds and the side quests are amazing!
I love the story
And ALL made by one guy!
I hate that game as well. The story is super cliche and the combat is boring.
The combat is really boring though
Thanks Pam! This is a genre I've gotten more into over the last few years, so the recommendations are great to hear!
No problem
I also highly recommend Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight !
Super fun
That was pretty good, but a little rough around the stage design.
I like it too! Short and fun. A tiny-vania, if you will.
On game pass, I keep thinking about downloading it before it vanishes.
YEESS Thank you not enough people know this one. Currently doing the insane difficulty, really fun
Great job with the last couple of vids Pam. Love the content. Keep the super fun stuff coming! Also, I’ve been super curious about Time Spinner.
Thanks!
I suggest Feudal Alloy, you play as a gold fish in a jar attached to a knights suit of armor. Also Alwa's Awakening is really fun as well.
Great list. Another promising metroidvania is Record of lodoss war deedlit in wonder labyrinth. Very Symphony of the night like and currently only available as early access.
Axiom verge interested me when the developer went on record saying there are still things ppl haven't discovered in it.also guacamelee have to include that. Great job!
Oh, that's neat. The secrets and passwords did seem very obscure and hard to decipher.
Blasphemous, SuperEpic, Guacamelee, Bookbound Brigade, Finding Teddy, Momodora, Iconoclast, Owlboy,
Teslagrad, Yoku´s Island Express... there are a lot of metroidvania style games to play, its a great genre.
I think that's the first mention of Bookbound Brigade, I'm not familiar with that one.
A great reference and very handy. Good work and thanks!
Got two if they weren't already mentioned: Chasm if you want something like Timespinner/SOTN. If you want Dark Souls as a metroidvania: Salt & Sanctuary. 👍
This is by far my favorite game genre. I have only played two of these and am excited to try the others. Thanks for the list.
No problem, hope you enjoy them
One of favorites, from recent years, was Dust: An Elysian Tail. Definitely play it, if you haven't.
I don't see this game recommended enough. Played it last year and it took my heart
Thanks!
I really enjoyed Song if the Deep. Loved the aesthetic and story.
Thank you so much for getting lost in Axiom Verge, I thought it was only me. Great watch, thanks.
I had to use a guide a number of times
Blasphemous was pretty solid
Loved Bloodstained
There’s still a lot of fresh/unique ground to cover in this space, so I’m excited to see so many indie devs making them.
I will definitely check it out, it sounds intriguing.
I'm glad I gave Hollow Knight another shot as well, pushed through my dislike of having to find the map maker.
The Mummy Demastered is one of my favorites. Good video!
Thanks!
Valdis Story-Abyssal City is the best in the genre
One of the best curated Metroidvania lists I've ever seen. Liked and subscribed!
Thanks, welcome to the channel!
Other good games you should check out:
Blasphemous
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
Strider (2014)
I really liked Blasphemous. Just the right amount of difficulty.
Strider (2014) does not get enough love. I’ve been wanting to try blasphemous as well.
bejais I’ve been meaning to try s and s. Blasphemous is so good I can’t even fathom it, one of my favorite games ever!
Strider was quite good. But it needed a fast travel mechanic.
Does Strider get better? I played the first few levels and was bored out of my skull. I really wanted to love it, but...
Guacameleé is another recommendation in my opinion. Its combo based melee battle system is really fun, and the graphics are colorful. Also, it's not that often you play as a luchadore.
I’d also recommend Yoku’s Island Express. It fuses metroidvania with pinball mechanics and is a ton of fun
At least a list that has real nice titles. Thank you!
Bullet-hell metroidvania sounds appealing.
Rabi-Ribi looks fun. Just added to my wish list. I had kinda the same problem with Iconoclasts. The story is good, but very deppressing.
Or Controidvania? :D
I agree, a lot of the things people are recommending I do not consider Metroidvania's at all. They're just action platformers with some collectibles.
Some titles I can also recommend :)
- Alwa's Awakening & Alwa's Legacy
- Apotheon
- Child of Light
- Dex
- Giga Wrecker
- Guacamelee 1 & 2
- Hob
- Mages of Mystralia
- Minoria
- Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
- Owlboy
- Pharaoh Rebirth+
- Rabi-Ribi
- Shantae series
- Sundered
- The Messenger
- Wings of Vi
Thanks!
@@pawewodarczyk1546 Thanks! I'll check 'em out.
Cool list. I love Wings of Vi too, but it's def not a metroidvania. It's super linear.
One of my favorite styles of game, hands down. Thank you for putting this list together. I never want to stop playing new Metroidvanias!
No problem!
Great video has always thanks for the nice presentation! Have a good day.
That looks cool. Don't know if I'll ever play a metroidvania on PC though.
@@Cannotbetamed1 It has controller support! Don't miss out on this. It's that good. o,.o
It's funny because the red layer in the chair behind looks like you have an evil aura! :)
I loved the video. Thanks.
Is that what the cat from Robot Wants Kitty was doing after it was abandoned.
@@GabePuratekuta Could be? I'll have to check that one out
@@Aaron-from-BroTrio Really? I heard "cat mech" and thought "Like the final boss of Robot Wants Ice Cream!".

I had no idea Mummy Demastered was such a complete game. I assumed it was a simple, mobile-style time killer. As a lover of Metroidvania games, thanks for correcting my false assumptions.
No problem! I wouldn't have expected much if I just heard the title either.
Some of the metroidvania games I've enjoyed on my PS4 Pro that didn't make it on this videos list are:
Guacamelee 1 and 2
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
Wonderboy the Dragon's Trap
Dust: An Elysian Tail
Strider (2014)
Owlboy
Superb overview. All of the reviews are on fleek.
Thanks
@r3cycledPl4stic To be fair, I haven’t played Guacamelee in a while so I’ll take your word for it.
Great list. Sundered Eldritch Edition was phenomenal. Definite must play.
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom and Chasm are good too.
Oh yes this one is really good. One of the best remasters of an 80/90s series.
Thanks! The Castlevania series does have great music.
I still recommend that people play the procedural metroidvania done right, A Robot Named Fight. Honestly, it has prevented me from playing some other metroidvanias in my backlog I was really looking forward to. It's always so tempting to just generate another enjoyable
ACWraith A Robot named fight has been a favorite of mine recently as well, Fantastic game. It’s like a roguelite love letter to Metroid.
I loved it.
I’m not familiar with that one, I’ll check it out
@@Cannotbetamed1 just remember to hold up when jumping on enemies. It took me hours of frustration before discovering that by accident.
I checked out a video of it, thought it looked cool, gave your comment a like and got a (repro) copy of the game. It was short, beat it in a couple days, but it was loads of fun and very impressive for an NES title. I'm really glad to have it in my collection now. Great recommendation!
Thanks for the great video.
For sure, as others have mentioned, Blasphemous and The Messenger are absolutely amazing and worth the buy.
Timespinner, here I come.
Perfect time for this video. Metroidvanias have become my favorite video game genre. Even more so than modern games. Loved Bloodstained, and was looking for something else, now that I have completed it. Timespinner seems like a great alternative. Thanks for the video.
PS: Give DeadCells a try!
I love Dead Cells! Not a Metroidvania though.
I backed Bloodstained and I will never regret it. Sure it's not perfect, but they really tried to make it something that honored SOTN but added to it.
For the most part, they succeeded, and I am proud of what it became.
Same as me. Loved it and can't wait for the DLCs
I really enjoyed it. One of the few of these I got 100% on.
@@Cannotbetamed1 Me too! Though I had to wait several weeks or months for the fibal achievement to be patched.
And I agree heavily that they put too much of some things into it.
Nice video, thanks. Valfaris is a really great platformer. Tough but a lot of fun.
The delicious Brinstar Overgrown with Vegetation music. Best Metroid song ever.
Really good video and brilliant reviewing. A lot of games iv never considered playing before . Definitely going to check out a few of these 👍
Glad you enjoyed!
Some of these games look great and I haven't seen anyone else talk about them. I will definetly check Timespinners, the submarine one and the head in space one haha
What's your opinion on Iconoclasts? I really loved it's story and characters, it was a great surprise when I played it.
I haven't played it
