DIY: How to replace a wheel or fix a flat tire on a Milwaukee handtruck Dolly

- In this video, I'll show you how to replace a wheel on a Milwaukee hand truck. I have a puncture in the tube and I'm trying to fix the tube only. But it's almost next to impossible to remove the tube out of the tire without damaging the rim so I replace the entire wheel instead. Stay tuned.
I took the cap off with the back side of a claw hammer. However, one of them split and the other was so mis-shapened by the time I got it off that neither one would not longer hold the new tire onto the metal rod. This is a ridiculous design by Milwaukee, shameful actually. So, to make a permanent fix, I just pulled out a 1/8" drill and was easily (surprisingly) able to add a 1/8" hole through the end of each side (both wheels) about 3/8 inch in from the outside. Then I cut a small piece of heavy stiff wire, threaded it through the hole and bent accordingly (basically a home made version of a cotter pin). Works great and will be super easy to replace both wheels, if ever needed again, in the future.

Exactly how I fixed mine too. Mine kept loosening up on it's own. Drilled a hole, added a washer and cotter pin.
Just looking at that hub now before ordering my replacement wheels and wondered why the hell there's no cotter pin. Thanks for verifying this would work. Let's see if I break it :D

The easiest way is to put WD40 on the axial and the metal retaining ring. Then hit the tire rim from the opposite side with a rubber hammer. The tire and retaining ring pops right off. Put the new tire on and the metal retaining ring. Place the end of a 3/4 inch pvp pipe over the metal retaining ring and then tap the other end of the pvp pipe with the rubber hammer to seat the ring down on the new tire. It is that easy. 10 minutes to do both tires.

10 minutes for both tires? I think that’s just a dream. I spent over three hours on one wheel following your directions and a whole new can of WD40 and the wheel did not come off. In fact I reverted to a full handle sled hammer with the wheel still on. I think your remarks about “10 minutes for both wheels “ is just a dream.
I tried doing just that and it moved very little 😢

I did it like Elena said. WD-40 with screw driver and rubber mallet. Came right off, took both off in 30 seconds.
That could have been a two minute video.
I have one and this the WORST design ever! Could not be harder to remove. I want to throw mine out rather than replace the wheels

This is the worst buy I’ve ever made. Do not buy this hand truck. I waited years to buy one to have as my forever household hand truck and ended buying this after just what seemed like neutral reviews on most I researched. I lost the receipt now I cannot even return it 😭
I will however just buy new wheels and give it away because I can’t even stand looking at mine- it reminds me of so many wasted hours and also wasted money on the initial purchase. Tube tire replacement. Tire kit to actually get the tire off in the beginning- then the cut hands and wasted time trying to get the actual tire back on. Definitely never buying another Milwaukee product. I don’t know why I heard they were really good.
I never personally fix one of these tires. That's why I'm looking up the video but I did remove it and if you remove it, you can go ahead and just pull out the tube
I feel Milwaukee did this poor design on purpose to get us frustrated and just make us buy a new dolly
A tip on removing these thing, since I just removed 4 and it proved "no problem" (this wasn't true last week). Longer, thick, strong screwdriver. It gives you more leverage against these pieces of junk. But they do come off pretty quickly with a little careful prying.

As you can see from the video, I did try to pry it out using a screw driver and all it did was to bend the rims. The tire was packed real tight to the rim and the rim itself has thin metal so it bends easily. Maybe you have an older model that has a thicker and better rim. But that did not work on mine
Ahhh, that makes sense. No, mine came out pretty easily. I was surprised.
I literally just removed 2 of these in less than a minute with a claw hammer.
It would be easier to put cotter pin just drill a small hole on the axle instead of the lock washer the old tires are still good just replace the inner tube but the old rim is useless.
It is painful waiting for you to get to the point with everything you’re doing in this video. You should’ve thought it all out before you started.

This cap is a ridiculous technology. I have the same hand cart truck (dolly) and I moved my electric guitars and Yamaha amp. This amp has weight and I hauled on the ramp to the U-haul van, and I hauled the amp down the ramp at the storage unit. After doing this loading and unloading, I realized this cap was missing. I was lucky the wheel did not come off while carrying the amp. My God, dear lord, I did not know I risked the Yamaha amp because of this ridiculous cap. I am innovating to secure the wheel to the axle with a shafter collar. I replaced both tires and as I was removing the cap, it broke, but the new set of tires came with new caps. I am upgrading my hand truck without the caps.
100% helpful. As someone who does not have much arm strength, cutting using the dremmel was the easiest way to take the retaining ring off.

Just remove the split pin and off it comes.
There is no split pin on this model.
I used the claw end of a large crowbar. Effortless.
I want to take off the two front wheels to have the rear wheels the same in the front cause im making a trailer out of this hand truck.My question is what's the wheel size in the rear or i can go with caster wheels.I want to know the proper tools to use when taking the two front wheels off cause im going to be using my icebear trike scooter cause it has a hitch in the back of the scooter ?

mangreat71 so I actually only used a hammer. Ripped off the split washer with the nail remover, changed the tire, and used the nail remover to open up the split washer, because mine was too tight for the bar. I did it by ringing it around one of the two edges of the nail remover, putting it on the ground, and bending it. Then when it was close enough, I put the original washer on, then held the split washer in place while I beat it onto the bar, until it was almost pressing against the wheel.

Nope just use a hammer to pry off
Use the claw end of a hammer to remove the cap. Have a screwdriver handy to pry it off once it's loose enough. Make sure to have new washers to replace the old ones. And use a socket and hammer to get the new cap started on the axle once the new tire is on. Tap it down just shy of flush with a hammer and screwdriver.
p.s. Have a rag and some wd 40 or 3 in 1 to clean up the axle while you have the wheel off. Don't lube it up....just clean up the built up residue. It's just smart.
