I was asking you in your other video about the difference in bearing edges and I came back and listened to this video and I can’t really tell much of a difference in the attack even with headphones on. They both sound incredible. I do lean a little more to the mahogany warmth tho for the overall tone. They just sound so round and warm. I’m sure you’re having a blast with these 2 kits. Really enjoy the videos brother, thanx!
Wow Jeff, you actually did the side by side comparison. You did a great job matching the pitch. I still say they both sound great!!! You can hear a difference when the processing (eq, compression, reverb) is off compared with when the processing is on. I'm sure, hearing them in the room, any differences may be more noticeable than a recording especially within the context of a full band mix. Even with the differences with the bearing edges you mentioned (maple gum is the 60 cut and Red is the rounded 45s) I thought there would be a more noticeable difference between the two. I'm curious if you ever checked the bearing edges or if you ever had them re-cut? Again, very cool comparison, thanks for sharing!!!
haha, yes I did do it! and the bearing edges are spot on. At least on MW, when you run your finger on them they are incredibly smooth and consistent. No need to recut anything
My opinion: The thin maple/gum is more for live gigs, fusion & contemporary. The thick maple/mahogany for studio, R&B & rock! The mahogany, due to its larger pores, is what allows that slight decay and softer resonance that is very noticeable. That’s how Noble & Cooley describes their Horizon series. The red kit is my favorite of the two. The red kits tone is very full and has lots of weight/body to it that I love so much. Great video. Great audio. The difference in the kits is extremely noticeable… 🎼🥁🎶🎵
right on, thanx Dusty! I was surprised when I put them together like this b/c it was obvious that there were differences and I think you nailed them all. Someone said its like picking between two kids, ha. Fortunately I don't have to, its just nice/fun having the options.
Dang, Jeff. I like both, but the blue just barely edge up my preference. Great tuning! Thanks for using the Classic Clears. I have Reponse 2 clear over Classic Clear on my dw right now, but I'm thinking Studio X or Classic Clear next. Excellent playing too. You're of the highest caliber. Pretty sure you could have taken over for Portnoy or Sucherman no problem!
aww, right on, thanx for the vote of confidence :). I've been using the CCs for almost 10 yrs! They just do it for me and like I've stated elsewhere - visually I like how "clear" they are - especially w/ these wood interiors 😎
Nice, thanks! To me, the 10s sound the same, the 12s sound almost the same, and the 14s, the blue sounds just a touch deeper/lower, maybe due to the 1" extra depth. They both sound great!!
I prefer the blue (thinner shell) ones, though both sound great as always. Do they both have the same bearing edges? That can contribute to differences, as well.
Jeff it seems as though the maple gum would be a better road kit because it's just lighter to move and has higher resonance but I would keep the red kit for studio work!
I'll actually be taking blue out for an Elvis gig I'm playing in Greenfield IN in late Nov so that'll be fun. And... for the reasons you mentioned - easier to lift/carry! haha
I hear the volume difference. Not a huge amount but it's noticeable. Different shells so that's expected. I hear a bit longer sustain on the Blue drums while the red are a bit more focused. Both are great.
That's what I'm thinking, the thickness is the main difference. A guitar buddy was over yesterday & he thought the blue was more punchy and red was more focused. Again, its like trying to compare two of your children :)

thanx! You're right, I'm totally digging both but besides this video I have had the blue one set up since I got it.
They both sound amazing and really close to each other. I love Pearl!
Thanx Todd! They're so close but slightly different

Pearl! Best reason to play drums.

thanx for the input! always fun to hear what others think
Both sound and look great man. I'd be happy with either one. But I do favor the red sound just a little more.
thanx man! its like a buddy of mine pointed out - "which of your kids is your favorite?" haha.

@@JeffWald if you ever get to PA shoot me a pm we'll get together and have a beer or three!
@@MatthewBarelickha, sounds good. I was in PA in July when I bought it from the guy, State College PA I believe
@@JeffWald I'm about an hour more west of state college!
@@MatthewBarelick yeah man, I was there quickly and then spent the weekend at my relatives up that way before bringing this thing back

Thanx Mark. I agree. Red def seems more focused, like I'd mentioned - almost like it has die cast hoops on it
Maple gum sounds like it has a slightly longer decay, and slightly brighter, 👍👍
Thanx Steven! Longer for sure, not sure if brighter in person but both sound amazing in person
They sound pretty close to my ears, I think the red ones seem a little more punchy guess cause of the thicker shells?

@@JeffWald LOL! I guess!!
Red is louder without effx
Very similar
yeah, I agree on both comments. thanx!
