Lorde is an unique artist, she has synesthesia and in an interview she said when she listens to Melodrama, she sees purple. And if you pay attention: purple is a mix between red (related to love or angriness) and blue (related to sadness or disappointment) and that's what you get when you read the lyrics and hear her voice. MELODRAMA DESERVES EVERYTHING

Pure Heroine (1st) is her second most acclaimed after Melodrama. Compared to the maximalism of Melodrama, both Pure Heroine and Solar Power (3rd) are pretty minimalism. Pure Heroine is very coming of age and Solar Power is feels like a very self-care, finding yourself album. Solar Power isn't very popular, a lot of people didnt like it but I find it so beautiful especially know the pain she's been through to get there. Excited to see yalls reactions

This album is the kind of album where you everytime you listen to it, you figure out something different about it.
The meaning of "summer slipped us underneath her tongue" meaning "we're ecstasy". Or "They'll hang us in the Louvre, down the back, but who cares? Still the Louvre" because the Louvre is an musium but way back in the day, people were executed in the back of the Louvre. They were hanged.

Melodrama is a complete piece of art. I wish I was exaggerating, but it truly is one of the best albums of the 2010s and of the 21st century so far. I'm so excited to see both of you get into Lorde's short but excellent discography.
    - Pure Heroine is Green. A coming of age sunset hangout with friends, socially and politically aware, introverted teen angst album.
    - Melodrama is Violet and Royal Blue. A deeply sad drunken walk home after a party. Desperate, fiery, reckless, "melodramatic" early 20s heartbreak album.
    - Solar Power is Golden. An introspective mental health break from society album. An "I have issues but I go to therapy" state of mind, a freshening shower and coronas after a day at the beach, a quiet and relaxing enclosed family late lunch in the afternoon...
All three albums are stellar, I really hope you enjoy them as much as we do :)

20:30 The line “You’re all gonna watch me disappear into the sun” is a nod at the album that follows this one, Solar Power!! A lot of people dislike her recent album because it’s extremely stripped back compared to this one, but if you go into it knowing the context and understanding that it’s more about her finding her roots as a person again after all the fame, it’s so much more meaningful to listen to. You just can’t go into Solar Power expecting Melodrama because they were made in two extremely different points in her life.

I love this album so much. You can totally hear the way Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and Gracie Abrams for example were all inspired by Lorde and many more young pop girls. It feels very clear as you both pointed out. I also think you were spot on that she was influenced by Taylor and Taylor vice versa. They are friends. Taylor kind of took her under her wing when Ella was going viral so young. I think they relate to each other a lot and have always complimented each other for their songwriting and bridges.

    • @nikai0713

I'm sure Taylor and Lorde have massive respect for each other, but the influence can also be explained because Jack Antonoff, the producer of Melodrama and Solar Power, is also the main producer for like the las 5-6 Taylor albums AND for Lana del Rey. I used to love him (and still do, mainly for this album) but it has come to the point where he kinda reuses melodies and it's getting to a plain sound, I was really dissapointed by Solar Power bc of this. I hope he regains his past brilliance

    • @1redfury
      @1redfury 7 месяцев назад

Solar Power is excellent but I've accepted that by its nature it's sound could not be universally loved and that's alright. Anyway If ever I hear an album he worked on and don't love it I've realized it's at least 80% the artists fault and not his, because he's simply fulfilling what they want from him. Idk if you've heard Florence + The Machine's Dance Fever, but it's top 2 albums of 2022 for me with Beyonce's Renaissance & imo proof that Jack Antonoff is still a genius producer lol@@nikai0713

Melodrama is not only an album, it’s ✨an experience✨. Lorde is, in my humble opinion, one of the best lyricists of this generation, so incredible.
While Melodrama is by far my favourite album out of her three, I love all of them.
The thing about Ella is that she manages to capture very specific feelings and moments in time in her songs and projects. Pure Heroine came out in 2013, she was 16 and she sings about the pains and joys of growing up so well. Melodrama is the perfect rollercoaster of a breakup. Solar Power was criticised when it came out in 2021, and after the high that was Melo, it did feel much more laid back, but I personally needed it, I needed the healing and grieving it brings about.
It’s exciting seeing people experience her for the first time, I hope we get the other two albums sooner rather than later, this reaction was a joy to watch🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻

"Perfect Places" is my favorite track on the album, probably. Musically, it's great but maybe not the absolute best, but thematically it ties up the album marvelously, ending with a keystone for Lorde's deep (and at this point, trademark) ambivalence about her generation. On the whole, I think "Melodrama" is my favorite album of the past decade.

    • @call-rickey
      @call-rickey 4 месяца назад +1

Dude I could write an entire essay about how much I love Perfect Places lol. On first listen it sounds like a party anthem, a high note to go out on (like the guys were talking about here), but her vocal delivery sounds desperate to me. And it ends with such a deeply exhausted note. The lyrics capture her anger and exhaustion and deep sadness about where she finds herself in the world, at having fallen back into the cycle of melodrama. Lorde was inspired by Greek tragedy when creating this album, and I think that's particularly clear in her choice of outro. Instead of ending the album with the Liability (Reprise), where she gathers her strength and pushes back against what she's been told to think she is, she ends the album with her tripping back into this cycle she's just brought us through. She hasn't found the peace she finds on Solar Power. (I'd actually argue Solar Power isn't her 'perfect place' because 'what the fuck are perfect places, anyway?' and the third album is more contentment than perfect happiness, but I rest my case)
Anyway I have a lot of Perfect Places and Melodrama feelings lol. It's prob my favorite album period.

There's a reason a lot of the GIANTS of the musical world, including David Bowie, called Lorde 'the future of music'. Her lyricism is so evocative, poetic and abstract (compared to Taylor's straightforward, but still poetic, storytelling style of lyrics), her sound being so unique, etc. I love Taylor, but Lorde definitely edges her out.

Supercut is her actually moving on and looking back to the relationship that ended. She was just looking at the good parts, but the final lyrics were a repetition of “in my head i do everything right”. This was her actually relapsing, that’s why the start of the next song says “I’m a liability”.

I have to admit this being my first time watching your reactions I was a bit scared when you started listening to the album and your dad's face was stoic.
I'm so happy you loved this album. This album is absolutely iconic. One of my all time favorites. She didn't win the Grammy because she refused to go the Grammys because they didn't want her to perform her own song. She talks about it in Solar Power.
She was 16 when she wrote Pure Heroine. This album was released when she was 20/21. She is a genius. Taylor Swift first worked with Jack Antonoff on 1989 and Lorde and Taylor are friends so when she was looking for a producer, Taylor recommended Jack and they KILLED IT with Melodrama. And actually Taylor used Lorde's old producer (the one from Pure Heroine) for Lover.
Hard Feelings / Loveless is my favorite song from the album. It's such an amazing song sound-wise. I like how you said you felt like something was breaking and it was hauntingly beautiful because I feel like that's exactly what it is. "These are what they call hard feelings of love", when you love someone so much and they leave and you feel like you're breaking...
Lorde said that she envisioned this album as a house party with different rooms. And the songs are different rooms. Liability is finding a room with just a piano and sitting there, away from the party, and singing. I also think she talks about her relationship with fame. "What will we do when we're sober?", "All of the things we're taking 'cause we are young and we're ashamed...".

So so glad you two loved this album! It’s severely underrated in the mainstream but is incredible and holds up over time. Now i need to go re-listen so i can appreciate the Pink Floyd and u2 references

Loved this reaction so much, I love her vocal layering it makes her sound like a bunch of teenage girls which I always say she is the voice of our generation.

lorde is unique on so many levels! pure heroine is amazing but melodrama set her apart from other pop artists for me. it showcases her talents in a different manner.
    loved your reaction!

I am so pleased to see you react to this! This is my absolute favourite album of all time - I revisit it at least once a week and still find new things inside the songs even now years later.
I would love to see you react to her other two albums, but especially Solar Power! It is not only a brilliant album, but such a powerful departure from the sounds and moods of Melodrama. I think you would both find the shift really interesting!!

This was easily my favourite album of 2017, and definitely in my top ten of all time. It's so rare to find an album that is both a collection of amazing songs, but also such a flawlessly cohesive single piece of art. It HAS to be listened to in order, from start to finish.
I'd love to see you react to a Lizzy McAlpine album, especially her second one, "five seconds flat". She's a very different musician to Lorde, but I also enjoy the way she tells a story over the course of an album.

I think what makes Lorde so good is that she is just experimenting with things she finds interesting at that time, and that blends really well with her almost autobiographical writing ability. It all comes together successfully because it is just an honest exploration of herself.
