His serve was considered big at the time he came into the game in the early 70s. It certainly isn’t by the measure of serves decades after. And even by the late 70s, Roscoe Tanner was hitting huge serves.
I was in high school when he was playing Borg and McEnroe. We were playing with racquets that are tiny compared with today’s. I can’t beleive I was able to hold rally’s as long as I could back in the day. So many fun memories. My dad had a Head Competition. The first graphite racquet. I used it and it boosted my serve to 120 mph! Unfortunately, I never developed my ground strokes to match my serve. I did serve to a young girl who happened to be training at the club I was practicing at with my high school team back in 1977. Her coach saw me serve and asked my coach if he could borrow me for a few minutes. He had me serve to this girl who must have been 12-13 at the time. He told her if she could handle my serve that she was ready to face any woman’s serve. I served, she returned. It was like hitting against a wall. She got everything back and then we’d volley until I made a mistake. She was truly amazing. A couple of years later I saw her again; This time on television at the finals of Wimbledon!
