It was a mixed traction event and didn't even think about what I would open and end with as it was just the order from the day. My next events should be just steam between Christmas and New Year and January looks to have a few steam gala's already pencilled in.
1. The 8F is undergoing a valve & piston exam. 2. I personally think this is a very unfair thing to say. The GCR volunteers will have spent endless hours planning the timetable, preparing the locomotives and infrastructure and making sure everything works as it should. And I'll admit, I'm no diesel enthusiast, but we have to face the truth that diesels are becoming just as popular as steam and there is an ever increasing market for them. This gala was never meant to be just about steam. So I think we should all just learn to accept the following that diesels have developed, and we should always consider it 'special'.
To make a comment like that you've clearly lost sight of what a unique heritage railway the GCR is. Where else can you experience the sight of multiple trains passing on a double track mainline? Do you support the railway by volunteering with the upkeep of the locomotive fleet? 😊
The Last Hurrah has always been a mixed traffic event with the diesel locomotives, mainly working the freight demonstrations. It's always been well supported by and showed by the large visitor numbers with all services being busy. There aren't many other heritage railways that run such a frequent service even during galas.
