Christmas Kids Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
Ronnette, my dear, don't ever disappear
Do what you want as long as you stay here
I need you now, I love you so much
More than you could know
[Verse 2]
The Christmas kids were nothing but a gift
And love is a tower where all of us can live
[Pre-Chorus]
You'll change your name or change your mind
And leave this fucked up place behind
[Chorus]
But I'll know, I'll know
I'll know, I'll know
I'll know, I'll know
I'll know, I'll know
[Bridge]
Appearing unsightly
With devils inside me
If you ever try to leave me, I'll find you, Ronnie
If you ever try to leave me, I'll find you, Ronnie
If you ever try to leave me, I'll find you, Ronnie
If you ever try to leave me, I'll find you, Ronnie
[Verse 3]
I'm leaving, Phil, I'm leaving now
I'm going to escape, but you won't know how
Or where to find me when I'm gone
I'll drink myself to death inside
This prison cell
This prison cell
[Pre-Chorus]
So get me out of here
Get me out of here
Get me out of here
Get me out of here
You'll change your name or change your mind
And leave this fucked up place behind
[Chorus]
But I'll know, I'll know
I'll know, I'll know
I'll know, I'll know
I'll know, I'll know

This song so perfectly encapsulates what being in an abusive household is like. You never feel safe, it always feels like they're there, it feels inescapable. Yet, it also encapsulates the strange "nostalgia" of it all. All of the happy memories stained by the overwhelming amount of bad ones. It really is a lovely little song.
Rest in peace, Ronnie.

They were having a normal relationship for a little and after that friendly relationship, Phil physically and emotionally abused Ronnie spector. Phil spector got 3 Childern known as the Christmas kids to keep her from emotionally running away. She tried to change herself but everyone would've known her, including Phil spector. Phil took away her shoes so she couldn't run away. Later she found her shoes and managed to escape through a window leaving Phil spector and the 3 of the kids in the house. @@beesley6252SHIT WASNT NORMAL WHEN HE WAS ABUSING HER
The song is based on real events. This was the story of Phil and Ronnie Spector. Phil worked with a bunch of famous artists one of them was named Ronnie they had a very abusive relationship. The song is called "Christmas Kids" because Phil adopted children as a Christmas "Gift" to try to fix their relationship. However he did not care about them in the slightest and left in 1 bucket to act as a toilet for the kids. He primarily got them to stop Ronnie from leaving him. This didn’t fix things so he locked her inside, put barbed wire around their mansion, and bars on the windows. The line "You can change your name or change your mind" meant that she couldn't change her name, because everyone knew her as Ronnie and the last name gave her so much legitimacy that she couldn’t be successful without it. She tried to drink herself to death, but she ended up in Alcoholics Anonymous, they helped give her the courage to try to escape. He threatened Ronnie with a gold coffin that he would display her corpse in. He then took her shoes so she couldn't escape as easily. Luckily one of the windows broke and she managed to squeeze herself through the broken window and escape. Unfortunately she lost everything in the divorce including the children, however luckily she managed to sue him for a lot of money. Phil ended up getting caught on other charges and he went to prison. Phil died in 2021 of Covid. And Ronnette died in 2022 at the age of 78 of cancer.
TLDR: Ronnie was in a very abusive relationship, Phil threatened her and that’s what the song is about.

This song is about a man named Phil who abused his wife named ronnette. The darkest words are “if you leave me I’ll find you” or “devils inside me”
The story is about phil and Ronnie Spector, (her being mentioned in the song, also an 60s pop-star,) to cut it short, phil was abusive to ronnie, and often threatened her to death if she ever tried to leave him. The lyrics said
"You can change your name or change your mind" Because she couldn't change her name, because everyone knew her as Ronnie. The song is called "Christmas Kids" because Phil Spector adopted 3 children as a Christmas
"Gift" and left in 1 bucket to act as a toilet for the kids. He got the kids so he could make Ronnie emotionally attached to them so she wouldn't leave. To everyone saying how cheery this song sounds, I find it very interesting from a musical perspective. I haven’t quite looks at the written music, but from what I can hear it’s filled with 2nds (especially at the higher parts) and 5ths which are both respectively tense/ hollow intervals which create unease or dissonance. Which, combined when combined with the rest of the song kinda just gets passed off as passing tones so it still sounds good in context. I think that really adds on to the message or the backstory of the song too, a realtionship that may have looked good at first glance or an outsider looking in but upon further investigation is sick. Roar is a Phoenix, Arizona, hard rock band formed by Owen Evans in the late 2000s. In 2016, Evans started moonlighting as the touring drummer for fellow Arizona-based folk-punk band AJJ, but he continued to release records as Roar. "Christmas Kids" is a track from Roar's 2010 debut EP, I Can't Handle Change.
The song is about producer Phil Spector's abusive relationship with his wife Ronnie Spector. Phil Spector was a music producer who was known for his innovative "Wall of Sound" production technique that was popular in the 1960s. He was married to Veronica "Ronnie" Bennett, who was the lead singer of the girl group, The Ronettes, between 1968 and 1974.
According to Ronnie, Phil Spector was controlling and jealous, and he would often physically and emotionally abuse her. She described incidents where he would pull her hair, hit her, and even threaten her with a gun. She also said he would isolate her from her friends and family and force her to stay at home and not work on music.
Appearing unsightly
With devils inside me
If you ever try to leave me, I'll find you, Ronnie
"Phil Spector was said to have hidden his wife Ronnie's shoes so that she couldn't run away," Evans detailed to The Phoenix New Times. "He was rumored to have threatened his wife with a glass casket he kept in the house, saying that he would display her corpse in it if she attempted to escape. Spector was simultaneously writing and producing trite, catchy, pop songs for teens."
The title refers to the twins Louis and Gary Spector that Phil reportedly coerced Ronnie into adopting one Christmas in an attempt to revive their marriage.
The Christmas kids were nothing but a gift
And love is a tower where all of us can live
Ronnie eventually filed for divorce from Phil Spector, citing irreconcilable differences. The singer later wrote in her 1990 memoir Be My Baby that she feared for her life during their marriage, and her mother helped her to escape from him. Louis and Gary Spector also accused their adopted father of engaging in likewise behavior towards them.
Roar released "Christmas Kids" as a single on March 14, 2010. It entered the UK singles chart for the first time in 2023, 13 years later, after it trended on TikTok.

However phil spector took control of her life. So Veronica wanted to leave. So phil spector installed guard dogs and barbed wire around the house and security guards. Phil spector was also abusive physically and emotionally. moreover phil spector adopted two children in Christmas as a gift so Veronica wouldn't leave that why it says *The Christmas kids where nothing but a gift* Also Veronica developed a bad alcohol addiction. She did that to try to give herself alcohol poisoning so she could leave phil.Thats why it says in the song *ill drink myself to death inside this prison cell*. Also phil kept a gold coffin in his basement incase he killed her and he would also hide her shoes so she doesn't escape. One night in 1974 Veronica and her children escaped with the help of her mother. Then Veronica filed for divorce and she escaped a man that made her life hell. To all new people, this song has a back story. It references Phil Specter who was popular for his 60s wall spund production married to a popular singer Ronnie, part of the Group The Ronnettes. While they’ve been married Phil has been very abusive to Ronnie and threatens Ronnie if she tries to leave the house. In the start of the song, “Ronnette my dear, Don’t ever dissapear.” Is Phil singing telling Ronnie that she can’t leave without shoes which kept her trapped in their house and the lyrics “The christmas kids were nothing but a gift” Is Phil adopting kids for Ronnie’s christmas gifts which made the name of the Song “Christmas Kids”. That is all I know about the dark, traumatizing backstory of Phil Specter and Ronnie.

Sorry, I can't be the only one who, out of all this messed up story, is only deeply and truly disturbed by one question: what happened to the poor kids who grew up under Phil's custody after Ronnie left?...like, I'm usually pretty callus, but the thought is kind of horrifying to me, I feel like it could be them eerily echoing "I'll know, I'll know, I'll know, I'll know" in the song, even if maybe that's not what ROAR intended.
If anyone knows if they grew up only under his custody or if they found a safer environment it would be great and a relief to know that maybe they ended up being safe after all.
About the interpretation of the lyrics and who says "I'll know...", I know it's supposed to be Phil saying it, but it's interesting to imagine the poor little kids telling the adoptive mum "you'll (...) leave this f****d up place behind" (as she fortunately did in '72 ) but "I'll know+I'll know+I'll know+I'll know"= we'll know (what is going on here with Phil Spector and what you left behind because we are still helplessy trapped here with him)
freaks me out
Okay - wish this story had a happier ending - Ronnie and Phil adopted 3 sons. A singleton and the 5-year-old christmas twins. After Ronnie fled, all 3 kids were horrifically abused by Phil in childhood, mostly s*xually. They spend a great deal of their childhood locked in their bedrooms, only being let out to entertain their father (s*xually.) They confirmed this in a 2003 interview, which to my knowledge, is one of the only interviews ever done with the boys. (Google it, if you can stomach it.)
Dante, the oldest, ran away when he was around 10 years old, much like his mother did. When police found him, he claimed his father had beaten him. Phil just told the police to keep the boy. So he ended up in the custody of his mom, Ronnie. BUT I think by this point, she was remarried with 2 more kids of her own. So he ended up being raised by one of her sisters for the most part, though I'm sure he got to have a closer relationship with his mother than the twins did.
I still haven't seen anything to imply that Ronnie reconnected properly with any of the 3 boys. And all of them stay out of the spotlight nowadays, I don't think they've done interviews in decades. So we only have that one snippet from 2003.
i finished reading The Shining recently, so now, this song always makes me think of Jack & Wendy Torrance
Merry Christmas guys
POV: this song starts playing for Christmas

Damn this song reminds me of my mom. She was dependent on her family, narcissistic, mentally abusive and always covered her abusive behavior towards father and her kids as a act of love. I left my house in pure despise when I was teen with nothing but a one bag of belonging and money I had. Didn't tell her I'm gonna leave and I lived peacefully far away from my home and oh shit. I saw her face right outside of my new house waiting for me. It was pure horror but thanks god as I grew older and she realized she can't trick me anymore, she somehow gave up and just calls. But my god damn memories of past is still haunting and all other family member is suffering from depression she gave us. I wonder what would've my life been if I acted on my thoughts on getting rid of her when I was 5. I'm sure it will still be better then now

When you know the meaning of the song it hits A LOT differently.
I really feel like I'm the only person who has ever actually "listened" to this song, seeing as everyone keeps saying it's actually so much darker than you think and shit but like, I knew that the whole time, do people actually just not pay any attention to the music they listen to or what? I still really do like this song though
