You could kx250up an exhaust trapping valve. It would take a 1:1 cam, 2 pushrods and rocker assembly, then fabricate a contoured valve that snugs around the exhaust port and goes up and down to shut up the exh port and allow a longer burn time/build boost. Boysen did this with a kx250 with 60% low end torque boost! You could take the cam, push rods, rocker out of a SB or BB chevy and cut them down to size and a small timing gear/belt/chain to the PTO or flywheel side of the 850 engine. then take it from there. You could fab the contoured exh valve out of stainless though.
@@nicholasokula8140 I understand that. But it still doesn't have a huge power increase. If ski doo put this engine in an xrs and it made 185hp boosted at sea level it would sell like crazy. Ryan Belland true but then again, if they slap a huge turbo on there’s a risk the engine might blow up and if the engines are blowing up across the nation that puts a bad name on ski doo. They have to focus on reliability aswell as power and that’s what they gave us.

So there's a little bit of back pressure in exhaust that doesn't change with elevation and that's how low altitude equivalent intake charge can be maintained? OK, fine.
Considering the X3 turbo R started at 157hp and is now pushing pretty much 200hp you can expect the power output to rise in the coming years. Ski-Doo are playing it safe by not converting the entire lineup to turbocharged engines just yet and probably also waiting to see how people are going to manage to break these before cranking the boost up.

As someone said above me, just buy a turbo kit. That’s unfortunate you got an expert, it’s still a sick sled. The challenge is that the turbo uses a lightened crankshaft not used in the regular 850 so there is no way to make it a kit. Not to mention a different ecm and software
So the skidoo 850s blow up and break all the time, so much that parts are back ordered till the end of riding season and now you have added a turbo to. Makes sense that it can only handle 165 hp.
Well, software only tuning, basicaly no, not beyond changing target AFR. More boost would require a more restricted exhaust to create higher back pressure to keep the turbo from just blowing gas and air straight through while both ports are open.
OK, so more burnt gas would do the same (as far as the turbo is concerned) as restricting the exhaust, BUT you end up with higher density gas which changes expansion chamber tuning. So if I have my sound wave speed to density relation remembered right, you want a shorter chamber to keep the back pulse from letting too much gas from blowing through...
@@Marc_Wolfe If you are going along and you tip over with an 850 etc turbo, it is on a dry sump big oil jug with a pump feeding the journals with oil lone everywhere when i looked at one at a dealer, you probably have to kill the motor as the oil jug sump will have air near the suction line and starve the engine of oil pressure. DIY 2 stroke conversions make some people crazy!
I don't see valves in the head to contain boost pressure; all this would do is allow you to run without an expansion chamber exhaust... which for some reason you kept on this. Bolt on marketing for people that don't understand the physics. "huhuh, it got uh terboh, turbo go brrrrrpfpfpfpf"
Guys are gonna fiddle with it. I guarantee it 😀 put a turbo and an ecu on something, and guys will mess with it. Little more boost without the proper mixture settings, and that 850 will burn pistons like logs in the fireplace..
That sounds like Diesel Doug who built a 6v53 2 stroke detroit diesel dragster in the 80"s. He detroked it from 318 CID to 270 CID and did 1800+ hp out of 270 CID v6 2 stroke insanity! Turboes, nitrous and methanol/ethanol injection.
Isn't it useless technology? 2 stroke engines have no cycle to compress air inside the cylinder, so how is it possible to turbocharged them? The extra pressure that is made by turbo will be thrown away through the exhaust hole. so we get an engine that does not create additional power, while burning more fuel, throwing it through the exhaust pipe. No extra efficiency is created, just more fuel burning.
The expansion chamber has already fixed your extra full problem. The computer tunes it all on the fly to be efficient. Yes, it's a pretty small increase and is more of a turbo normalizer as it doesn't increase hp, but just keeps it consistent as air gets thinner. I wouldn't buy one even if I had the money. Naturally aspirated would be enough for me, however, depending on how well this does, hopefully turbos may start coming on most sleds stock and competition reduces the price overall.
Many 2 stroke diesel have turbo, i got an 8v92 detroit turbo but there is 4 exhaust powervalves in the head and ports at the bottom, same for EMD. Another way is to make a poppet valved loop charged 2 stroke the exh opening a litle early for blow down the baffled intake valves open. this is commonly done on a toyota 3jz 3L inline 6 to make a valved 2 stroke with boos over 1000 hp for a suoped up version. Anothewr way to build boos is to use an exhaust trapping valve in the exh port. here is a VW 2 stroke valved 2 stroke conversion:ruclips.net/video/kot9GYBeCJ8/видео.html
Good idea and cool to see from an oem! But no power increase over the n/a 850 is a dealbreaker (obviously except for some mountain riders). All that extra weight and complexity for basically nothing for flatlanders. It better have loads of torque down low. I don't understand why they couldn't bump up the power a bit. I guess their motor can't take it? It is a Rotax engine and not a Yamaha after all. zing! ;) I know there will probably be aftermarket support but it is not the same I think. I wanted to sell my Sidewinder when I started the video, then started laughing halfway through. I am thinking of switching to a 2 stroke but I will miss the turbo power too much. I wish someone made a modern 900-1000cc or turbo 2 stroke with 180-200hp+ for trail and backcountry ridding. Basically I want a lighter Sidewinder! @@ES-pr8bt I agree 100% for high elevation 40hp is huge but closer to sea level it doesn't mean much.

Any video in french ???
No power increase for riders at sea level? Kinda a pointless turbo then if you ask me. 4lbs of boost? Thats cute. My sidewinder spools 15lbs.
Ryan Belland well they’re making it for riding in the mountains not at sea level
@@nicholasokula8140 I understand that. But it still doesn't have a huge power increase. If ski doo put this engine in an xrs and it made 185hp boosted at sea level it would sell like crazy. It doesnt make any sense. You can bolt on a boondocker turbo for $3,000 on your current summit and make 200hp at 8,000 feet vs the 165 this factory turbo makes. Not to mention that $3,000 for an aftermarket turbo is probably going to be cheaper than the difference in price between a normal summit and a factory turbo summit.
Ryan Belland true but then again, if they slap a huge turbo on there’s a risk the engine might blow up and if the engines are blowing up across the nation that puts a bad name on ski doo. They have to focus on reliability aswell as power and that’s what they gave us.
@@nicholasokula8140 they didn't give you any power. They gave you the ability to keep making the stock 165hp up to 8,000 feet. I guess they didn't give it the ability to make more than 165hp because the 850 engine can't handle it. At least that is the conclusion I come to
@@Cummins2519 ppl running 850s boosted with over 250hp with no issues so dunno. But yeah i guess they want to keep it on a safe level. And keep in mind if u slap a turbo kit on u lose ur warranty.
Skidoo needs put this engine in trail sled
i dont think it would fit well because ita designed to boost the engine slowly the higher you get to maintain the 165 horsepower, not to actually boost the engine at sea level

So this is going to blow up the moment people start tuning. Where is the 200hp version ?
John Havnen it’s for the mountains, 165 hp at altitude and still light ,unlike a 4 stroke. Mountain guys will love it
E S this won’t be a big seller among mountain riders. You can buy a new non current sled of any make, put on an aftermarket pump gas turbo that makes 200hp at 5 psi boost for cheaper. Also you can easily turn it up to even 9psi on race gas.
Tyson Boser lol it will be a huge seller among mountain guys. New with warranty. Hard to beat. Funny guys said last year that the 900 turbo wouldn’t sell because it was only 150hp and it was one of the biggest sellers out there because the average guy looking for a trail sled 150 hp is perfect.
tune what? block the blow off valve and tune how much gas gets blasted out the exhaust?
Riding it must be amazing !
So there's a little bit of back pressure in exhaust that doesn't change with elevation and that's how low altitude equivalent intake charge can be maintained? OK, fine.
Would be even cooler if the intake didnt run thru the crankcase still, with a wet sump.
Осталось крылья добавить. Отличный самолет будет. 😁
Alex Games - Слишком сложный, чтобы быть надежным.

Yes,mine 2 i got an 8v92 2 stroke detroit turbo out back i got to work on. I would love to see this motor scaled up to ofer 500 CID 8.2 liters aned offered as a create motor. BTW Achates power is making OP 2 strokes for truck and cummins OP 2 stroke for the army. Electric motors are electromagnetic 2 strokes but they sound strange. Lightning bolts are 2 stroke as there is a down streamer and return stroke just like this rotax! The most powerful of these 2 stroke bolts are the positive bolt off the top of the cloud anvil!
2 stroke turbo is nothing new, look at 2 stroke Detroit diesel, EMD, Fairbanks Morse as well as many Toyota poppet valved loop charged 3JZ Supra 2 stroke conversions
I wonder how durable it’ll be.

Common articcat make a alpha 2 stroke turbo or 4 stroke turbo
ATC KID Speedwerx no need for all this crap
john stjean ? What do you mean. Your mad because I ride a Polaris and articcat
The only thing that can outperform this is a Yamaha srx triple motor with a turbo in a modern sled 🤘🏽
john stjean true. But it would be cool if articcat came out with a turbo from factory.
ATC KID just get a kit form Speedwerx Arctic cat doesn’t know how to built engines only reason they have a good motor is cause it off a Suzuki engine.the Japanese they know how build great stuff they built the best motor in the Industry Yamaha srx best motor ever build in snowmobile history
Arctic cat is possibly coming out with supercharged factory sled. If that happens this turbo doo concept will not stand a chance.
Supercharged 2 stroke not a 4 joke, BTW can the 4 joke run on just oil injection with dry sump with total loss burn off with synthetic 2 stroke oil, let’s see and let the experiments begin?
Look up supercharged snowmobiles. They blowing turbo units away. Just cost serious cash
@@MrThewheels An exhaust trapping valve will help build boost!
@@MrThewheelsSome 2 strokes can wear out faster because of the pair production that happens inside of the. the anti electrons or positron annihilate the cylinder walls if you are not careful, 2 strokes are also thought sensitive as well and negative spirit energy can also cause wear if your energy is not nice or negative!
Please tell me you guys are gonna sell kits! I just bought an expert...
colin bonsma bro don’t do it buy an after market turbo.
As someone said above me, just buy a turbo kit. That’s unfortunate you got an expert, it’s still a sick sled. The challenge is that the turbo uses a lightened crankshaft not used in the regular 850 so there is no way to make it a kit. Not to mention a different ecm and software
Silber turbo put one one las season ran hard all year n still takin a beating run 7lbs on 70 30 mix can run 5lbs on pump she is an absolute ripper
So the skidoo 850s blow up and break all the time, so much that parts are back ordered till the end of riding season and now you have added a turbo to. Makes sense that it can only handle 165 hp.
Hopefully these can be tuned for way more power.
no
Well, software only tuning, basicaly no, not beyond changing target AFR.
@@Marc_Wolfe Could you not just change the wastegate spring so the turbo doesnt dump boost?
@@Marc_Wolfe If you are going along and you tip over with an 850 etc turbo, it is on a dry sump big oil jug with a pump feeding the journals with oil lone everywhere when i looked at one at a dealer, you probably have to kill the motor as the oil jug sump will have air near the suction line and starve the engine of oil pressure. That is the only thing that i would about and i heard it is a concern.
Should be like 200hp and maintain that at elevation. 165hp isn't overly impressive
It is when your 165hp sled only makes 125hp+/- at elevation.
@@Icutmetal I understand the concept, again why not 185 or even 200 so you get a power increase when not at elevation also

Pistons and sleeves will be on backorder next season..
Espen why do you say that? It’s still only 165hp. Should be just as reliable as the NA 850
Guys are gonna fiddle with it. I guarantee it 😀 put a turbo and an ecu on something, and guys will mess with it. Little more boost without the proper mixture settings, and that 850 will burn pistons like logs in the fireplace..
Espen aftermarket tuners will take care of the ECU like they always do. There will be little to no problems with that fuel air mixture
Oh we`ll see. I`m pretty sure there wil be lots of tuning thats not done by serious tuners. I still say pistons will burn :)
Why is everyone afraid of a turbo 2 stroke Detroit diesel,EMD and fairbanks morse! i got a turbo 8v92 out back that i tinker with.
make it V6, meth injection and you've reliable ~550hp+ lightweight (~70-80kg) track monster for LMP2-3, or a bike
Thats what an exhaust tapping valve can fix!

850 polaris no turbo 175 hp 12000$ US , Skidoo 850 Turbo 165 hp 17000$ lol common....
What’s common? Don’t you understand what elevation does to horsepower? That Polaris will only be making 130ish horsepower at 10k feet.
Yesssssssss
I have personally replaced 2 850 non turbo motors
Levo42691 I’ve replaced more than that, but they typically have many thousands of hard miles, like 5000+
Good idea and cool to see from an oem! Or at least an ace turbo with as much power as the Yamacat's. I hope Polaris takes note and does the obvious move to make a 2 stroke or 4 stroke monster! Or Yamaha, and it might actually last a few years! I can dream...
Ok.
People running 250+ hp in 850s with no issues. I guess they want to play it safe tho. But there will be flashes for the ecu to make more power i will promise u that.
Alex M It’s not available in anything but the mountain sleds. This don’t mean anything to flatlanders but it’s huge for the mountain guys
@@ES-pr8bt I agree 100% for high elevation 40hp is huge but closer to sea level it doesn't mean much. It's a big move by skidoo for sure and is a 2020.5 model in limited quantities so maybe they are just testing the durability. I think the engine and belt can take it, especially on shorter length and lug tracks. I just hope next year other models will get this engine but maybe with 10-20hp more.
@@Hoonasmeister Yeah that's what thought too with aftermarket support but then you loose the warranty and usually reliability. I think it's a missed opportunity to make it 170+ HP. I hope it is at least faster than the stock 850's at sea level then it make a little more sense.

289pinto that’s fair and it’s definitely a step in the right direction but they need to be pushing at least 6 pounds or even just make it so riders can’t tune it where they want it but that’s just me.
