Based on the groups I'm in and my experience I wouldn't say these are unreliable. You have to change the VVT wheel every 100k km/60k mi and oil every 10-15k kms, but other than that it has no other issues. Mine is a 2002 S40 2.0, the naturally aspirated version and I really love this car. Of course it has some minor issues like the cruise control working spotty or the speedo sometimes dropping randomly to 0, but for a 21 year old thing I'd say it's a pretty solid little car. I love the looks, it's plenty fast for me with 136HP (for 1280kg) and you as you said you don't get that crappy material feeling in the interior even though it isn't luxury either.

We still have a 2002 1.6 109 bhp Volvo S40 and it's reached 300000 km. It's elegant, with a wonderful comfy seats (much better than a lot of new models from other brands), and, although it had some problems that you mentioned (clunky front suspension, but easily solved with a new links) it's a very reliable car. And the 4 cilynder aluminium engine are derived from the famous 5 pot that defined the 850.
We are very proud to own it.

With the amound of S40s and especially V40s i see, id say they were a trumendous success. Its by far the most common older Volvo i see. My dad was urging me to buy something like this bc i really wanted an 850. I did buy the 850 hehe

My brother had a 70's 240 that he drove back and forth from Maine to college in Bethlehem, PA. the thing was a rust bucket, but the engine just kept going... even strapped to a 200amp alternator to run his stereo system. Slow, ugly and loud. It was fantastic.

Hi, cool video, I own a EU 1997 S40 with a 1.6 gasoline engine and I haven't lost a drop of engine oil in one and a half year since I got it, maybe the oil leakage is US engine specific,

At 139k (not long after this video was filmed), the brakes went out suddenly and entirely on the highway, so that was ultimately the final nail in the coffin for it unfortunately.

Had my Volvo S40 for over 70k kilometers now and ZERO problems. The S40 in the video clearly hasn't been taking care of, what a shame.

and as the owner and caretaker of the car, kindly piss off. 70k km is 43k miles, or approximately half of what I put on my car. So maybe don't make claims without knowing the whole story. I have plenty of records to prove the car was taken care of, but that's not any of your business anyways.
