The clip of him in the locker room after the game 5 win, still down 3-2 to the Bruins, saying “remember this room. We’ll be back for game 7” was one of my favorite moments this playoffs. Legend
Hate him as a player but that was pretty legendary of him saying that and then actually beating them in game 7. Honestly that is a captain material.

100% accurate. He always said he wanted to be a flame for life and was so happy when the flames drafted him. He was asked if he wished he was drafted higher and he said no way he only wanted to play for the flames. Something happening with the bridge and then they brought in Sutter and wouldnt assign a captain unlike every other team and there was also a general lack of passion and lack of winning culture, which made him want to move on. Tkachuk himself has referenced this in interviews in the past. As a flames fan it's insanely frustrating. I can't grasp why people are upset brad is gone. The lack of foresight with Tkachuk, gaudreau, Giordano and Monahan are all unforgivable.
couldn't agree with you more. Local media will praise Treliving but all of the players you mentioned, including Bennett are gone. And we got absolutely nothing of value for them.
Yeah I’m absolutely sick of people in the media gushing about Brad. “He’s such a good person and GM”. Blah blah blah. Sure he’s a good person but not a good GM. When he had the opportunity to sign Tkachuck long term he didn’t. Same thing with Gaudreau.
Giordano isn't that good. Agree with the rest of that list.
@michael JJan to me he should've been traded long before he was taken. You have a guy in his mid 30s winning a Norris trophy you instantly take advantage of that value that will never resurface at that age.

I think he didn’t care to go along with the narrative anymore after he wasn’t in Calgary. Also came out in that interview that Tkachuk despised Sutter
Sutter was a big part of the motivation. Old school hockey grinding and no flare for new innovative playing styles. Mgmt really botched this all around.

Most people knew this at the time. This is nothing earth shattering. Most Flames fans wanted him signed for the 8 years, not the bridge deal. Whether it was to keep Frolik is anyones guess, maybe it was maybe it wasnt, doesnt really matter now. Trelliving took a calculated risk/gamble and signed Tkachuk to the bridge, he had seasons of 48 points, 49 and 77 points. He was coming around but nobody thought he would become a player that has multiple 100+ point seasons at this point of his career. Remember, when he signed his new bridge contract his productivity dropped quite a bit the next 2 seasons. He went from 34 goals and 77 points (in 80 games) in his contract year to 23 goals and 61 points (in 69 games) in the first season of his new $7M AAV contract. The second season of his new contract his productivity dropped even more. 16 goals and 34 points in 56 games is hardly a $7 million dollar player and people were saying "thank god we didnt sign him for 8 years and $9 or $10 million a year"
Lets also not forget about the numerous "players only" team meetings the first couple years of his new bridge deal that the team had over Tkachuk antics on the ice and how many players were getting tired of sticking up for him over senseless stuff.
Hindsights always 20/20 but at the time of the bridge nobody could have predicted numerous 100+ point seasons from Tkachuk 😊

Not a Flames fan -- but Tkachuk is a beast -- and if the scuttlebutt is true -- that's rough rocks without a doubt. That whole scenario should be taught in GM University as a step-by-step guide for how to get fired into the sun.
Holy shit. You blowing up my man 💣 🔥
I don’t think he wanted to be a lifelong Flame. Good on him to say all the right things, but his game is at another level right now. I didn’t see this amount of passion in Calgary. Although someone stated in the comments here that Tkachuk wasn’t thrilled with the effort being put out around him there. If that was indeed the case, good on him for moving on. Nothing worse than giving your all, and your teammates not doing the same.
I remember there was a game a few years ago where Tkachuk got the puck flipped at him and his teammates just stood there. That, combined with the flames not wanting to give him the C and his issues with Sutter, I think he felt the team and coach didn't fully have his back. We know now Sutter tried to hold him back and didn't fully embrace his play style. Just seemed like a toxic situation, it's never a good sign when every single good player wants to leave... I think he just said the "right things" because he wants to respect the fans. Although so many Flames fans flipped on him after he was traded, most realize he wasn't the issue. Sutter should have been long gone.
Tkachuk loves it Florida, he is American, pays very little taxes, no snow.. He loves it there

Ouch!!! That really hurts!
Good video. Regarding the Tkachuk trade. Thought it was good trade for Flames, getting Huberdeau, Weager and first. But the Flames screwed up big time with that 10,5m X 8 years extension for Huberdeau which will start when he's 30 years of age
Brett Hull, Joe Neiuwendyk, Doug Gilmour, Mike Vernon, Martin St. Louis, Matthew Tkachuk... Flames getting rid of players and it coming back to bite us in the ass, that's pretty much how we roll. Our lot in life as Flames fans is to suffer after the trade
Joe N for iginla?
I think Barkov will, again, raise to the occasion either in these playoffs or next year and take the mantle of the teams superstar. I think he can mesh well with most other players but not click with them instantaneusly. I think they'll be brilliant together although I still kind of miss the chemistry between Barkov and Huberdeau. The future for Florida is still bright.
Man Flames fans have just been in the rough for 2 decades now, just so much under achieving every year. Treliving really turned out to be a dud of a GM, it’s terrible ownership decisions like that that’s lead to results like this season
This is such a stupid take. Whether he had that contract or not he was leaving. He didn’t leave because he didn’t like Calgary, he left because Gaudreau left.
And if he stayed I can guarantee he wasn’t going to actually play for them. He would have pulled a Jack Eichel and refused to play until he was traded.
This. Just because he had a contract doesn't mean he wouldn't have asked out. The combo of Gaudreau leaving and Sutter being there he would've asked out.
As a former Flames fan. It hurts to see such a talented and loyal player go like this...
Now the panthers with lots of young talent collected another fantastic player with lots of experience.
Like thanos collecting another stone for his gauntlet.
They are dumping on the leafs 3-0 no one saw it coming.
Leon Draisaitl was in a very similar situation. He ended up with an 8.5*8 contract that some people thought was overpayed at the time. Tkachuk probably would have taken 9 or 9.5*8 but instead they walked him to free agency.
The one deal Peter Chiarelli didn’t derp up. Either he’s lucky or he knew something we didn’t with Draisaitl
As a Canucks fan I wanted him in 2016 instead of Olli Juolevi at 5th, during his draft year I knew the type of player he was going to become. I have a feeling the same story will be true with Elias Pettersson, after his entry level deal he signed a 3 year bridge deal, and after next season I won’t blame him if he leaves Vancouver. Going back to the Michael Frolik part, I’m going to guess Tanner Pearson was the guy they wanted to keep so they gave him a bridge over a long term deal.
Why would you pick Juolevi over Tkachuk is ridiculous. But that is Canucks drafting. Just the name Tkachuk is worth picking. LOL. Imagine Tkachuk with Cancuks. I think they would be in the the playoffs more than missing them. But again with the Canucks, they probably would of screw something up so he wouldn't develop properly or wanted to get traded.
@@sucraf1 Ya I always had more confidence in Tkachuk and wanted him more back then, but if we picked him I don’t believe we would have gotten Pettersson and Hughes, at that time we needed defence, Joulevi was the best available then, but after him were other defencemen like Mikhail Sergachev, Charlie McAvoy, and Adam Fox. Just imagine that and then later on if we got Quinn Hughes.

Better off just keeping the blood on the ice
Tkachuk didn't want to stay in Calgary, they had no choice to trade him.
Tkachuk has already said he wanted a long term deal.
It's becoming very clear that the owners are actually the biggest problem with the Flames. Every since King passed it's been down hill. Everything has to go through the nitpicking owners and the GM has less power then they should have. Not sure if that should fall 100% on Tree for that story(if true). They made him sign Sutter, then he wasn't allowed to get ride of him, now since everyone else will walk too, they finally said goodbye to him. The owners need to stay out of, what they hire people to do for them, that's their job and what you hired them for.
I think we're better off than Vancouver, but yes. Even sign him long term, and if he's a dud, trade him. Look at the other bad contracts in the league. This would have been one of many. However, the downside now, is, unemployment, perhaps permanently for Tree.
oof. I feel the pain in your voice... Tough break, Johnny. Maybe it'll all work out in the end!
I think Johnny leaving was a major blow to him wanting anything to do with Calgary. They had statistically the best line in hockey with lindholm, and won the pacific division.
Things looked bright in Calgary, and you think he left cause of Michael frolik?
Welcome to the club. My Jets let Paul Maurice go. Well, well, turns out he wasn't the problem, but at least he and Tkachuk are now enjoying some great playoff hockey.
At least Ottowa was smart enough to sign Brady long term
I can’t believe after this trade was done late into the night when it was announced I was so pissed thinking this was a win by flames. Maybe it’s because it was coming off the cusp of a president trophy season and the raw feeling of bowing out in the 2nd round. It was the first time we had hope as panthers fans. But after the dust settled. I feel like the panthers made out big. Hubby is mehh in the big games and Keith is that guy you need in the trenches come playoff time. The dirty greasy goals with the ability to score the sexy ones too. You want and need that kinda guy. Flames fumbled this hard. Panthers got a better player and a younger one at that.
If the flames can get a coach that has a better offensive upside to him they I’m sure Huber would do much better, sutter is a defensive coach, huberdeau was used to offence. Just saying the trade may be lost now but they still got a great defenceman and a former 100p player
Chuky said on Spittin' Chiclets Ep 414 @ 1:59:00 (Nov 8, 2022)
He's was looking for 6, 7, 8 years.

I remember last year when ALL Flames fans said that the Panthers were ROBBED. That the deal that they made was "Highway Robbery" and that it would be forever until we recovered from it. Well those statements aged like milk. Tkachuk, honestly is a Top 10 player in this league, but during the playoffs he's irreplaceable. After watching Huberdeau for years I knew that Tkachuk was EXACTLY what the Panthers needed and he is a bargain at 9.5 AAV. Thanks Treliving
Treliving's worst decision was not making a move for a more reliable goaltender at the deadline. Doing just this would have saved his job. It could have even been as simple as bringing in James Reimer. Markstrom continuing to play and continuing to drop the ball during key games down the stretch destroyed this team.
Yeah is Markstrom signed for a while though? If he is they are kind of forced to use him unless they try to move him. His game dipped a bit though like you say, making a move difficult. Flames have gone through some goalies of late, and in the past have been unlucky with highly touted drafted goaltenders. But every team wants the solid GoTo guy and those are few and far between. I agree though, with better goaltending the Flames would be better, but that is every team.
AND, and the Leafs in their never failing wisdom now have that very GM. Just brilliant.
Panthers legend Michael Frolik doing Gods work.
Tkachuk and Marner played on the London Knights Memorial Cup winning team in 2016, with Mathew playing on a “Sprained ankle”. He scored the Cup wining goal in OT. If that didn’t tell the Flames what kind of player he was, no wonder they lost him to Florida and it’s showing now.
And that's why Pierre Dorion deserves a lot credit for being able to sign Brady and Timmy to long term contracts here next will be Sanderson and there's no doubt they will sign him long term. The Ottawa Senators are doing it the right way by signing all their young stars players to long term contract.
As an oil fan.. I luv the deal.. cause now I can enjoy the little bastard instead of hate his guts. Thanks brad lol

The Sens learned from this. They signed his brother long term out of his Entry Level Deal. Tkachuk was always going to leave, I firmly believe that. But at least had the flame signed him to an 8 year deal out of his ELC, they would have bought the first 3 years of his UFA eligibility.
With all that said, I did not expect Calgary to be so bad with weegar and huberdeau. Maybe they’ll turn it around next season
I think they will!…suter was the wrong coach for this team!
And he scores in the 4th OT early this morning to give the Panthers a 1-0 Series lead......Tkchuck is playing on another level these playoffs 👊
As a panthers fan, thx!
Worst decision the oilers made that will prevent them from winning the cup this year was drafting Jesse instead of Tkachuk that year. Imagine how much more devastating the oil offense would be with Tkachuk in there.
In 1995 I was at the Coliseum for the entry draft. The Oilers had the 6th pick. They picked Steve Kelly. A groan went through the entire building. Shane Doan was available. He was from central Alberta and was considered a local boy. Steve Kelly lasted less than two years. The Oilers also drafted Jason Bonsorgne. Same thing. They did draft Ryan Smyth. It is bad when the average fan in the stands knows better than the Oiler management who to draft. Steve Kelly a year and a half and Shane Doan 17 years.

I don't know if you could point the blame at any one person. But at the end of the day it's all mismanagement. Very frustrating. Time for a full rebuild.
Tax rates in Florida HAVE to be cheaper than they are in Canada. Except for maybe property taxes. Also it would open the door for him to stay in the states indefinitely.
It's much much MUCH better than Canada. FL doesn't even have a state income tax. I couldn't imagine playing for a Canadian team knowing your buds south of you are making so much more money than you are because nearly half of your income goes to Trudeau and his gay parties.
Your looking at this with a lot of privilege of hindsight. However, a few things I would point out. Tkachuck signing an 8 year deal would have simply cost too much. Frolik eventually being traded was a cap dump - which could also point to Treliving making sure the cap space was available in the future to extend Tkachuck. Tkachuck announced a year early he wouldn't sign. So a guy says he wanted to sign long term, but then two years later says he won't sign long term and somehow that is Treliving's fault? Had Tkachuck signed long term, would he have hamstrung the organization and publicly demanded a trade?
Bridging gaudreau and thachuk is reason enough why treliving shoul have been gone earlier
Keith's son is a perfect fit for the cats
Tkachuk lives in Johnny’s head rent free. Crazy how much he can’t stop talking about what’s in the past.
Never once heard him bitch about being a Flame or being in Calgary. So I'm inclined to believe it. The only thing I ever hear him bitch about it is losing, not pummeling an opponent enough, or Drew Doughty.
Tkchuck really woke up in September last season and was like, “I’m gonna be one of the best players in the world this year” and then he did.
Oh that's what he was like ?
Shortly after the Flames shipped Tkachuk off, everyone kept saying they won the deal by far for getting Hube and Weeger in return, and how they were gonna squeeze way more points and value out of those two than they would out of Tkachuk.
Tkachuk has always been a great player...
As a Wild fan, this makes me feel not so bad when thinking about how Kaprizov is going to walk at the end of his contract to go to a winning team
the fact is Tkachuk wanted out of Calgary like 2 years ago!! so there was no amount of $$ that would keep him. end of story. chapter closed. we now have Huberdeau and Kadri and they will light up the ice next season. Let's just stay positive here folks!!
Never thought I’d see the day he’d want out
Dudes insane. To not only be lifting your team up with words off the ice (not just the usual chirping, but real confident wait and see shit), but then laying it down on the ice - I feel like they're getting better every playoff game. Calgary's gonna be sad they see him lift the cup this year.
Oiler fan. I recall assuming Columbus drafting JP leaving MT on the table for us. I was happy to get a gritty guy on our team. Imagine what could have been in another reality.
It’s cause they drafted PLD. If they had picked Pulju, the Oilers would have drafted MT. JP was the best player available, according to scouting.
Imagine him with McDavid & Draisaitl! man, the Oilers would've been so freaking scary! but they drafted Puljujarvi instead who now might be a bigger bust than Yakupov. He went 6th overall in 2016 when nobody knew how much potential he was going to have. Today he's the 2nd best player from the 2016 draft after Matthews.
As a Jets fan looking at the 2016 draft makes me sick considering we lost Laine and are about to lose Dubois when we had a chance to draft Tkachuk
We probably would’ve lost Tkachuk too
It still hurts
When all the best players bolt out of there, you know you have a management problem.
Matthew Tkachuk is unique. And I'm using the proper definition of the word, one of a kind. Nobody fits the description, "Matthew Tkachuk type player." Flames had a generational talent that elevates the effectiveness of his teammates and would have kept the team relevant for 10-15 years.
Yesterday someone told me that Canadian teams don't have the financial backing that US teams do, so I looked up the NHL roster salaries for each team... 1) Montreal 95 million 2) Vegas 91 million 3) Washington 90 million 4) Edmonton/Vancuever 89 million 5) Toronto 88 million. However Calgary was much lower. Calgary is the only small market Canadian team... even Ottawa was toward the top. I found that fascinating.
That's what the team pays the players not their revenue/their entire finances, Toronto and NYR are richest teams in the NHL last I heard.
As a Florida fan, I can’t thank the flames enough.
Lol
Great example of how bad management ruins everything. Thats why good management make so much money.
sounds like management didn't know what they had. he's now the centerpiece of a stanley cup-contending team. not sure he would've made it there with calgary, so good for him. hope they make the most of their shot at a title
Everything worked out all right. You can't give someone $80 million because you think he'll be a superstar. He wasn't there at the time. Similar to MacKinnon at the time of his bargain contract.
The biggest issue wasn't the bridge - it was not convincing him to stay beyond the bridge. But the guys Brad got back are really good. Didn't work last year, but they'll be fine with a new coach. Every year is different.
Tchucker is actually filthy. And I’m a bruins fan dude single handedly shit on the best regular season nhl team in history
He's pretty right now. But wait till Florida turns that corner and starts losing. As Flames fans we all saw first hand how toxic he could become. Quitting on plays, ignoring coaches, getting bad penalties just cause he wants to. He's playing nice right now but I guarantee the panthers fan base will have many problems with him in the future.
Lots of hindsight in this opinion. At the time of the bridge deal, tkachuk was only worth 7 MM and even that was an overpay. The year after he signed he was a 60 pojnt player. You don’t pay more then 7 mm for a 60 point player. The bridge was a risk but it saved Treliving over paying. Sutter took the fun out of playing hockey and that is why Tkachuk left. His bridge deal made it easy for him to walk away from Sutters gulag. With a different atmosphere I think Johnny and Tkachuk would have re-signed
Sutter was the biggest mistake the flames made. Not sure who is responsible for that, but that decision may have come from someone above Treliving.
If this is true I don't think Sutter is to blame. If Tkutchuk stays the flames make the playoffs and Sutter keeps his job. Firing Sutter might be the 2nd biggest mistake.
That’s crazy! Because here my Habs are wanting a long term with Caufield but sounds like he’s only wanting a bridge! Writing is on the walk he leaves after a few years! So if Flames could have signed Tkachuk long term? Shame on them!
