Most people knew this at the time. This is nothing earth shattering. Most Flames fans wanted him signed for the 8 years, not the bridge deal. Whether it was to keep Frolik is anyones guess, maybe it was maybe it wasnt, doesnt really matter now. Trelliving took a calculated risk/gamble and signed Tkachuk to the bridge, he had seasons of 48 points, 49 and 77 points. He was coming around but nobody thought he would become a player that has multiple 100+ point seasons at this point of his career. Remember, when he signed his new bridge contract his productivity dropped quite a bit the next 2 seasons. He went from 34 goals and 77 points (in 80 games) in his contract year to 23 goals and 61 points (in 69 games) in the first season of his new $7M AAV contract. The second season of his new contract his productivity dropped even more. 16 goals and 34 points in 56 games is hardly a $7 million dollar player and people were saying "thank god we didnt sign him for 8 years and $9 or $10 million a year"
Lets also not forget about the numerous "players only" team meetings the first couple years of his new bridge deal that the team had over Tkachuk antics on the ice and how many players were getting tired of sticking up for him over senseless stuff.
Hindsights always 20/20 but at the time of the bridge nobody could have predicted numerous 100+ point seasons from Tkachuk 😊

That, combined with the flames not wanting to give him the C and his issues with Sutter, I think he felt the team and coach didn't fully have his back. We know now Sutter tried to hold him back and didn't fully embrace his play style. Just seemed like a toxic situation, it's never a good sign when every single good player wants to leave... I think he just said the "right things" because he wants to respect the fans. Although so many Flames fans flipped on him after he was traded, most realize he wasn't the issue. Sutter should have been long gone.

I have a feeling the same story will be true with Elias Pettersson, after his entry level deal he signed a 3 year bridge deal, and after next season I won’t blame him if he leaves Vancouver. Everything has to go through the nitpicking owners and the GM has less power then they should have. Not sure if that should fall 100% on Tree for that story(if true). They made him sign Sutter, then he wasn't allowed to get ride of him, now since everyone else will walk too, they finally said goodbye to him. The owners need to stay out of, what they hire people to do for them, that's their job and what you hired them for.

Treliving's worst decision was not making a move for a more reliable goaltender at the deadline. Doing just this would have saved his job. Your looking at this with a lot of privilege of hindsight. However, a few things I would point out. Tkachuck signing an 8 year deal would have simply cost too much. Frolik eventually being traded was a cap dump - which could also point to Treliving making sure the cap space was available in the future to extend Tkachuck. Tkachuck announced a year early he wouldn't sign. So a guy says he wanted to sign long term, but then two years later says he won't sign long term and somehow that is Treliving's fault? Had Tkachuck signed long term, would he have hamstrung the organization and publicly demanded a trade?

Lots of hindsight in this opinion. At the time of the bridge deal, tkachuk was only worth 7 MM and even that was an overpay. The year after he signed he was a 60 pojnt player. You don’t pay more then 7 mm for a 60 point player. The bridge was a risk but it saved Treliving over paying. Sutter took the fun out of playing hockey and that is why Tkachuk left. His bridge deal made it easy for him to walk away from Sutters gulag. With a different atmosphere I think Johnny and Tkachuk would have re-signed
Sutter was the biggest mistake the flames made. Not sure who is responsible for that, but that decision may have come from someone above Treliving.
