Tactile Knife Co Thumbstud Rockwall in 20CV - Unboxing and First Impressions

  • Sometimes unboxings don't go as expected, and this one definitely had an unfortunate twist. But TKC has already helped me send this back in, so I'm confident they'll get it taken care of. The rest of the knife is really impressive -- the same styling and form factor I loved in the flipper original, but now with really well placed thumb studs!

    I personally think its better it happened right away, the detent ball that is. Thanks for not editting that out, it shows that sh*t happens sometimes. I've always valued how things end up, more than immediate impression, although if its a common occurence i don't care how good warranty is.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад +2

      Haha, yeah, it's way better that it happened over my desk when I'm just fidgeting with it, rather than out and about somewhere where I might not have noticed. And I agree completely -- mistakes and defects are always possible, it's how it's handled that matters. And sending it in for warranty has been easy so far, at least.

    Thank you for this review. I'll wait another year before getting one.
    I did the same thing with the QC IQ which is a perfect knife now.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад +1

      You probably don't need to wait a whole year, but you're right -- one of the huge benefits small-batch companies like these is that they are able to constantly improve and refine with each batch! That's one of the things I admire most about Bryce over at QC.

    They switched from loose bearings to loose detent balls 😂 It’s awesome that it still fires out on deployment like that though.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад +1

      Hahah, that made me genuinely laugh out loud. But yeah -- it's pretty amazing that it can have such a thwack without any detent whatsoever!

  • @CNYKnifeNerd
    @CNYKnifeNerd 2 года назад +3

    I love that it still flipped without the detent ball.
    One of my favorite tests to try on a new knife is to open the blade just enough to get the ball out of the hole and try to flip it open. It shows if they actually thought about the geometry of the thumbstuds/flipper tab or just put them anywhere and rely solely on detent strength.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад +2

      I do that exact same thing all the time. Definitely a testament to their thumb stud placement that it will thwack out so authoritatively with absolutely no detent.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, they're close enough that a lot of folks would be choosing an either-or, not an and. They're stylistically right up my alley, so I like having both. But that's only because I've acquiesced to the fact that I am now, in fact, a "collector" 🙃

  • @mstuehler

    So, I'm incredibly excited about another US knife maker selling reasonably affordable, well-made knives, so I'll be supportive and patient. But, unless I'm mistaken, you've owned two Tactiles, and both needed to go back for repair? That doesn't speak well about their quality control...

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад +3

      Yeah, I unfortunately had to send my flipper Rockwall back, too. I'll talk more about what happened there in a future video, along with what the warranty process was like. But I expect issues like this as a new, super tiny company tries to grow, so I'm not taking it too harshly. And as I said elsewhere, they got me a return shipping label easily.

    Great, detailed videos! Just subbed. I was hoping to see a comparison between the IQ and the Rockwall as those 2 and the Smooth Sentinel are my current considerations for EDC at work. While wearing scrubs I need a slimmer knife. Any thoughts on that?

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад +1

      Man, I keep forgetting how badly I wanted to do that side-by-side-by-side between the iQ, Rockwall, and Waypoint. I should just make myself do that at some point, but ADHD brain sure does make that hard.
      I've not handled the Smooth Sentinel, but that does indeed seem like it'd be a good option for scrubs -- 2.2oz!! If slim and light are priorities, I will always recommend a Neutron: also 2.2oz (with micarta scales), and 0.388" thick. And that Waypoint (my personal favorite in this general category, though a bit longer than the others): 2.75oz and 0.371" thick. The Richard Rogers OEM Slim I just picked up is hard to find, but 2.03oz and 0.373". Very few things are as light as a Boos Smoke Mini -- 1.47oz on a 3" blade!

      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! Yeah, it was definitely a bummer. Issues like this can happen at any company, and luckily they took care of it without hesitation. But in general, I also don't see this kicking a Sebenza out of your pocket, unless you're really in it for the bearing action. This thing definitely rockets out and falls back down effortlessly, so in that regard, maybe it's what you're looking for.

  • @RamZar50

    The detent ball on my Rockwall also fell out and lost. Sending it in for a second time. First time, the lock bar had gone to 90%. Great looking and super slim folder but at that price of $300 that's incredibly bad QC. Mine is the flipper version from July 2021.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад +1

      Ah, that's the first time I've heard of one of the flipper detent balls falling out; the other I knew of was a thumbstud like mine. I had to send my flipper in for lock bar issues too -- I'll talk all about what was going on in my upcoming "Small Details Review".
      It's always a bummer to hear about QC issues like these, but they're still a very tiny, pretty new company. QC issues happen at any size, but they're also just still working these kinds of kinks out. They're doing so many other things right that I trust they'll work through these problems too.

    • @RamZar50
      @RamZar50 2 года назад +2

      @@KnifeNerdery Two huge issues on a brand new folder is not a small thing. They’re not that small nor that new. I’ve had their pens for ages with no issues. Even after mine was repaired for the lock bar issue I’m not confident the lock bar won’t travel to 100%. As a small company trying to build a name for itself in the knife world the QC and testing of these knives is severely lacking specially once you consider the $300+ price after shipping. You seem to be an unapologetic supporter.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад +1

      I liked this comment a lot -- it caught me by surprise, and gave me good pause to think about how I talk about them. I'm definitely not an unapologetic supporter. I completely agree with you that those are two really big issues. The issue I had with my flipper's lockbar was an even bigger issue (I experienced consistent total lock failure due to totally improper lockface geometry. It was basically a slipjoint.) And I also agree that they need to be emphasizing their QC way, *way* more in order to succeed. There's absolutely no way the knife in this video got properly QC'd -- it literally wouldn't open, and the most basic of tests would've shown them that. But I disagree that they're not that small or not that new. The pen business, while related, is a distinct and separate business, and much bigger; the knife side is I think only ~8-10 folks (but they might have grown recently). And it's predominately different people and fundamentally different tools and skills involved in both design and manufacturing. They shipped their first knives in March of this year. They're absolutely still very small and very new to this game. So nah, definitely not an unapologetic supporter -- both of the knives I bought from them had really major mistakes. I think they're making too many mistakes, too. It feels like they're growing faster than they can keep up with. But I *am* an empathetic supporter of a still-new, small, US OEM (something we need way more of in today's market) trying to do something pretty hard. And they fixed both of the mistakes I experienced without question; they didn't doubt me, give me any kind of run-around, or make the process difficult at all. So I credit them for that. And, like I said, they're smart enough that I trust that in time they will iron out their issues. If they don't, they won't survive in this hyper-competitive market.

    I bought a Buck Sprint a while ago (almost $200). Not sure what happened to my detent. Either the ball came out and I never found it, or the ball cracked. Whatever, if I held the lockbar back it felt smooth, but when the lockbar was touching, it felt like sandpaper.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад

      Woof, yeah, that's never fun. It's a rare occurrence -- either falling out or cracking -- but even rare things still happen from time to time. Always sucks when it happens to you. Were you able to warranty it? The nice thing about this Tactile experience was that they fixed it through warranty without question.

      @KnifeNerdery  Год назад

      If you're drawn to the clean aesthetic of this knife, then I wholeheartedly recommend the Quiet Carry Waypoint -- one of my favorite EDC knives of all time! It's running on phosphor-bronze washers, however, so it will definitely have a notably different style of action than this one, though the opening detent is still crisp and amazing!

  • @optimuscrime608

    Can you give us an update on this? Is the knife good now? Did they fix it? Thanks

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад

      Absolutely -- I'll be filming my full Small Details Review soon (of both thumbstud and flipper versions side-by-side), and I'll talk about the issues I had on each knife and the warranty process as part of that.
      But the really short version is: they gave me a prepaid shipping label to return it, they indeed fixed the issue with the detent hole that was catching on the ball, and the knife is better now. It still came back with meaningfully too firm of a detent for the amount of access you have to the thumb studs, but I was able to tune that myself to get it into a better spot. (And I haven't heard of others having the same issue; most say their detent is tuned perfectly.)

      Nope, the thumbstud version also does not have steel washers. They _did_ switch to captive bearings, however, which makes it a lot easier to disassemble. It's actually a tremendously easy knife in that regard.

      @@KnifeNerdery Did you keep it? I’m not sure that I will keep mine because it just hurts my thumb way too much. I struggle opening due to a very strong detent and closing it due to a very low liner lock that is NOT cut away like the flipper. I am very frustrated by that.
      Just curious if that changed at all for you?

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад

      Ah, yeah? I've had the opposite experience with the pens -- the two I own feel fantastic! Or does "rough" hear just mean the stripe pattern itself? I definitely see why it wouldn't be for everyone. But the fit-and-finish of mine pens are pretty spot-on. Sorry to hear yours were disappointing!

    Very interesting... BUT, let's take a moment to let this soak in...
    THIS is a prime example of REALITY. We might not all have a detent ball literally fall out, but I think all of us collectors, at some point, have unboxed something and immediately been devastatingly disappointed for one reason or another, REGARDLESS OF PRICE POINT.

    Ignore my last comment that I deleted. It's unfortunate for you and them. This particular issue seems like it could have been caught with a bit of QC. They mean no harm and definitely want the best, so it's not much more than an inconvenience.

      @KnifeNerdery  2 года назад

      Yeah, I'm very genuinely surprised this particular knife made it past QC. The symptoms were pretty strong and unmissable. I trust they'll make it right.

    Unfortunately Rockwell is just garbage quality. QC might be made in Taiwan but I've handled about a dozen and they've all been as good as you could hope for from a mass produced knife. Sharp, excellent action, solid lockup, etc.

    • @KnifeNerdery

      It's unfortunate that I've had first-hand, not to mention heard about second-hand, so many issues with Tactile's knives. What I *can* say, though, is that their customer service took care of every issue I had without hesitation. Strikes me as the kind of thing where they'd just be way better off spending more time on QC'ing the knives in the first place.
