    How do you like the screw pop? Despite being one of the cheaper options, I still find it to be the best of these minimal sliding utility knives. Simple, lightweight, affordable, and the locking feature is solid. Bought it on a whim and I now use it as my primary edc blade.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery 3 дня назад

      Yeah, especially for the price, it's a lot of bang-for-your-buck. But it's a pretty solid option in general. I was worried when I first got it that the lock bar arm would get loose over time, since it's just held in place with rivet tension, but it's never really seemed to change in tension in the years I've had it. My biggest complaint with it is just that it's super rattly when in the extended position. Not a big deal, since your thumb will be holding the blade silent while you're actually using it, but it still bugs me anytime I'm moving it around with the blade out. But overall, it's a solid, sturdy option with some nice features!

      Haha, thanks for the kind words! And you know, I've never tried pre-writing any of my videos, they're all just extemporaneous as I'm filming. I do think about roughly what topics I want to cover before filming, but then at some point I just hit record and start talking about it. 😅🤷🏼‍♂️ I'm sure there's ways that scripting it out would make it easier, but also aspects that seem like it would be harder? I'm actually going to be trying that soon for a very different kind of video I'll have coming up on the channel sooner or later -- a deep dive history on the evolution of the liner lock.

      Oh cool, you got one of the limited colors they dropped? Those look so good! And yeah, the tape trick usually works pretty decently. I'm always surprised at how thick standard Scotch tape actually is -- a single layer usually makes a big impact, and sometimes is too much!

    • @PranavRC
      @PranavRC 15 дней назад

       @KnifeNerdery Yep, it actually just arrived. I got into Tactile Turn after they dropped their Nautilus Side Click, and was always a little bummed that I missed what would've been my favorite color combo, so I'm glad they brought it back with anodization. Though it does seem like their anodization process makes the tip seam more visible. And yes, Scotch tape is surprisingly thick; I'd originally used a couple layers on the refill and had to peel most of it off.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery 21 день назад

      Yeah, it's pretty hard to design something like this to be truly ambidextrous. I've tried operating it with my left hand, and it's actually not that hard to push the lever bar over with my thumb and use my pointer finger to extend the blade, but it's definitely nowhere near as easy as it is for a righty. Hopefully if these sell well, Brian will be able to release a dedicated lefty variant. Theoretically it should be as straightforward as mirroring the design in CAD! UPDATE: Brian let me know that there IS a lefty option available! You just back the campaign as you normally would, then email them to let you know you want it to be a lefty. Later once they're for sale on their site, I'm sure it'll just be a normal drop-down selection or something.

      Ckf made one lefty long ago

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery 17 дней назад

      @@WillEDC Yeah, the CKF Kanza is kind of an oddball. It's aesthetically quite pretty, and in a way it actually does work similar to this one, at least in terms of how metal parts are bending. But in reality it works almost exactly like the Rexford RUT, and both of them are not actually designed for one-hand opening -- they intend you to push the locking bar over with one hand, then slide/pull the blade out with the other. And you're right that the location of the button you can push on does make it feel oriented toward lefties, even though it's the only orientation they make. Since the RUT is closed off everywhere, it does seem like you have no choice but to two-hand pull the blade out, but that Kanza's open frame design always made me suspect you might be able to contrive a one-hand way of opening it for righties that would ultimately be kind of similar to how you open this one: push your pointer finger into the button and try to slide it up with your thumb through the open frame. Lefties would need to try and awkwardly use a finger to slide it up while still depressing the button with their thumb? Ultimately, Kanza's are too hard to find and too expensive for me to have ever found out!

    What parker refill would you recommend for someone who wants bold solid lines? I've been using Uni-Ball Gel Impact pens for years because of their 1.0mm bold lines and super smooth writing, but they have smearing issues along with random clogs that seem to come out of nowhere. A friend made me a couple of pens that take parker cartridges so I'm new to this whole thing.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery 21 день назад

      Ooo, yeah, gel is definitely the way to go if you want bold, saturated lines. But almost all gel inks do have the risk of smearing -- they just take a lot longer to dry because of their water-based composition. My favorite in the gel space -- and the best I've used in terms of non-smearing -- is the Ohto Flash Dry Gel refills. Unfortunately, I think they only come in a 0.5 and 0.7mm -- the PG-105NP and PG-107NP respectively. I love these refills, so if you think a 0.7mm might cut it for you, definitely give them a try. www.jetpens.com/OHTO-PS-107NP-Needle-Point-Ballpoint-Pen-Refill-0.7-mm-Black/pd/9001 My other favorite gel refill for the Parker size is the Monteverde Ceramic Gel, and they do offer a broad point, the P44. It's listed as a 0.9mm, but it makes a very nice, rich stroke. amzn.to/3TMzJqS Unibene makes a very rich, bold gel refill. I've only used their 0.7mm, but find that it writes a little more like a 1.0 -- it's wetter than most. But they have a full-on 1.0mm, too! amzn.to/4eG17yF

      Haha, yes, price is definitely one variable that differs between those two. There's probably a thousand other differences that all add up to explain why the GhostTi costs more than those ultra cheap ones, and why it's so much functionally better than those, too. But there will definitely be people out there who don't care about it being functionally better, prioritize price above all else, and/or are genuinely fully satisfied with the $1 bent metal version. In which case, great! How lucky they are to be content with such an affordable solution to their problems! Sometimes I wish my brain worked that way! 😅 But alas, I cannot help but notice -- and admire and desire! -- all those little ways in which this version of "a piece of metal that holds a utility blade" is just plain amazing.

    I don’t fully understand how the edge of the blade isn’t touching the inside. If there was nothing on that side, then it would just fall out that side. Looks like the edge of the blade is touching the side wall, right where the logo is. Smart that he only covered the lower part of the edge, though, because then the half of the edge you’re using isn’t getting dulled as you push it in and out

    • @GearInfusion
      @GearInfusion 12 дней назад

      We have what we call 'blade rails' which hold the blade on the sides. You can see them in some of the shots, there are two front and two back rails.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery День назад

      Ah, yeah, like virtually all of these products, the edge *can* rub along the bottom of the bottom of the frame as you slide the utility blade out if you're applying downward pressure (toward the edge of the blade, which would I guess be more like lftward pressure with your thumb) as you extend it. I find that in practice the natural motion of your thumb actually provides a slight upward (toward the top of the frame, away from the blade edge) pressure most of the time, just because of the way that hands are shaped. What I was talking about in this video is that on *most* of these products (all of the ones that work the way I described at the start of the video), you end up sliding the blade *sideways* against the bottom of the frame as you push to overcome the spring/magnet pressure. On the GhostTi, the blade never moves side-to-side within the frame, instead remaining securely centered by the two rails that run along the frame on each side, and you instead lift the lock bar away from the blade.

That's a fairly common feature on knives like this, since it's an added feature folks can add without taking up any additional space. I do imagine they'll offer this in the dark colorway at some point, but it'll likely be a while.

      Brian here, can you explain the blackout option? Like your not a fan of blasted titanium and only want a coating like Cerakote or PVD?

      @@GearInfusionNot the OP, but I'm looking to get this and am also wondering if an all black option would be coming. I have the TPT Slide in matte black. Original is fine but black would be awesome. Update: backed the campaign, a black version down the line would still be great.

    Can you open bottles with the front part where the blade pops out?

      You know, I wondered that same thing and tried, and it didn't really work. Like, you could make it work, but it was nonfunctional enough that I don't think it was intended for that purpose at all. But it sure looks like it could be!

    IDK why RUclips randomly recommended this video to me, I'm not even in the market for a utility knife and this video made me want one!

    As someone who's just recently gotten into nicer ballpoint pens and have never had a machined pen before, this sounds pretty neat!

    Would you happen to know if there are any plans for a lefty option? :-) As far as i can see the lefties are going to have a hard time using that mechanism.

      Great question! I haven't heard anything about that, but I'll ask Brian and let you know what I hear. I just tried using it lefty, and it's actually not that hard to push the bar over with my thumb and the blade up with my pointer finger. But you're absolutely right that it's not as natural feeling as it is with the right hand. UPDATE: Brian let me know that there IS a lefty option available! You just back the campaign as you normally would, then email them to let you know you want it to be a lefty. Later once they're for sale on their site, I'm sure it'll just be a normal drop-down selection or something.

      We have a lefty version! You just order as normal and then email me, instruction in the lefty section of the campaign. Cheers

      That one is called "Ron's Utility Knife V3" from ScrewPop, and it's been around a long time. I probably picked it up on Amazon originally, but I'm sure it's available several places
