    Damn. I may be a hoarder too because I only got into EDC back in February and I recognize most of your knives lol. I've become thoroughly obsessed and have started designing my own knife that's inspired by the Paysan, Nightshade, Evo 3, Whippersnapper, and Lamia. Prob gonna do the whole OEM thing with Reate or Bestech or something. Damn, I really am an addict because I'm looking forward to going through the whole 2 hr video lol. PS... AMEN When you got to the Tactile Turn Rockwall at 26:40 I couldn't agree more!
    Nice materials and the Milling is great but I expected so much more from tactile turn having owned their *most excellent pens.*
    Your detent ball literally fell out on camera. I had one ship to me with a very loose scale, stripped screw, and the worst sharpening job *I've ever seen* on Magna cut, butter-knife dull!
    The *most troubling* problem with them, thank you for mentioning, is the biggest design flaw being the thumb stud! It's impossible to access it consistently (for me at least)! How has no one discussed this? my finger just slipped right over it a good 60+% of the time. 20% of time it came halfway open and was a liability to slice a finger, the final 20% of the time it deployed marvelously like a damn rocketship... Needless to say mine went back within a day or two. I had the rockwall with dimple design scales.
    If you can't deploy a knife, and even if I did it won't cut due to a blunt Edge, what good is it?
    It seems their most recent release was a dud as well- forgot the name of it. *I love their ink pens, so that's the positive-their bolt action and my favorite slide click mini pen!*
    P.s. I love the hell out of the Spyderco Smock also! That's one I'll keep and carry forever. My detent is perfect like your m390 Smock, love the reverse flick, and the Hollow Grind is insane-mine's a laser.

      Ah man, sorry to hear you, too, have had bad QC issues with Tactile. I got to meet them briefly at Blade this last weekend, and they really are genuinely nice, enthusiastic people -- I really want them to succeed! But it feels like they keep getting in their own way a bit by prioritizing growth over making sure they nail the basics. And it really does feel like it's coming back to bite them, 'cause it's hard to bring them up in conversation without *someone* having had a bad QC issue that they immediately bring up. And for good reason! That kinda stuff just shouldn't happen at that price point, and it leaves a strong impression on people.
      The thing about the thumb studs is just baffling to me. It's a totally manufactured problem that just doesn't need to be like that, and would honestly be incredibly easy to "fix". But they've stuck with it and keep sticking with it, even now on a new tanto model.
      Again, I really, really want them to succeed. They're very talented machinists, their hearts are in the right place, and they're doing that all right here in the US. I love that. I just want them to take all this customer feedback to heart and worry more about the state of the products they're sending out.

    Love collection vids…and particularly content with out of production pieces…2 of your CRKT models have been on my list for some time…but, limited funds, limitless love for knives….so in time they will be acquired…
    The Walker and the Elishewitz…CRKT operate in a particular price range but they can and do produce knives of very good quality, along with amazing designers….and they do their best to stay true to the original/custom designs….they were part of my introduction to modern knives and collecting ten years ago

    • @michaelbonade4667
      @michaelbonade4667 9 месяцев назад

      That Russel made Crawford design….right up my alley…knives like that make a collection….we all end up collecting a decent amount of what is in production at that moment, and if you look at a lot of collection vids showing off contemporary collections there is just a sea of titanium folders with blades that have oval holes in them…and 3d machined clips….its run its course….always look back to the years before…because the modern folder isn’t that old

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  8 месяцев назад

      It's always crazy to me when I learn some new factoid that puts the age of the modern folder into clearer perspective, 'cause you're absolutely right -- it's not that old! Like I've heard stories of flipper tab knives from decades earlier, but they weren't mainstream on knives until Kit Carson's M16 model from CRKT in 1999. But that's not even 25 years ago! (Another great example of CRKT being the incredible risk-takers that they are. I admire the hell out of their long history of experimenting with new knife mechanisms, and bringing clever designs from brilliant custom makers to the masses.)
      A collection of mechanically interesting knives has always been the desire for me. I love modern knives, and I definitely get swept up in the excitement of new releases and whatnot, but I've been getting the most satisfaction out of these deep dives into the history of knives and mechanisms lately. I just acquired a few really strange and wonderful pieces recently! And learned of a few others to hunt for.
      The hunt for older knives -- or even just to learn about older knives -- is a very different one. Most of this information is just not digitized! These histories exist primarily in books, trade magazines and flyers, old paper knife catalogues, or just the memories of the old-timers who lived through it. Makes it really, really hard to fact-check anything! But the challenge of discovery has always been one of the most fun parts for me, so sometimes it's for the better?
      Case in point: I just picked up a tiny little knife that I can't find any information on. It is -- basically exactly -- Barry Wood's "Swing Lock" mechanism, which he patented in 1968. But it has a tang stamp ("ETHAN ITALY") akin to, but not identical to, a brand used by Sam Polk in the early-mid 1950s to import Italian stilettos into the US ("ETHAN 1953 ITALY"), and is marked "PATS. PEND." on the inside. Who made this? Who was trying to patent it? And could it actually predate Barry's patent by 15 years? MYSTERIES!

    1:18:20 I believe that’s called a compliant mechanism!

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  Год назад +1

      Hell yeah, that's absolutely correct!
      For anyone reading this that's unfamiliar, a "compliant mechanism" is an object that uses the flexural properties of the shape and material to achieve motion or transfer force, rather than a conventional joint. It's a really cool and clever concept in mechanical engineering that's been around for a long time, but has definitely taken off in the last decade thanks to 3D printing, since it makes it so easy to create odd shapes out of a "single piece" of material. There's some fantastic videos out there of the wild mechanical contraptions people have built, all without any standard joints.

    • @Idaho_Knife_Climb
      @Idaho_Knife_Climb 10 месяцев назад

      @@KnifeNerderyyou’re a fantastic teacher and have a knack for explaining things in a very digestible way. To anyone else whom is reading this:
      You can find these mechanisms in things like your phone, a lot of them are microscopic and if I remember correctly these mechanisms are integral in your phone understanding it’s orientation, G-Force measuring devices, and I believe in some vehicles this is how your airbags deploy. I might be incorrect in regards to airbag deployment, however there are a lot of these compliant mechanisms used in avionics as well.

      The spring tension is a bit lighter, which helps, but the bar itself is a) shallower, b) considerably narrower (because it has to fit in the same space as the narrow blade stock), so those pose their own challenges when disengaging. Unfortunately (all depends on your perspective), they don't do that stepped milled finish anymore on the Skaha. Aesthetically I think it's fantastic -- it's the kind of shapes I would want to design if I ever made a knife. And if you're looking for a smaller custom user, it seems pretty solid. But it's definitely a weird combination having a tighter washer action on a front flipper. I actually lightened the lock bar pressure on it -- it was exceptionally stiff (and definitely not flip-able) when I first got it. You can tune a CRK to be flick-able, but if you leave it tight you can at least slow-roll it out. Tight front flipper slow roll is possible, but less easy. It also has a pretty beefy grind, so it's not inheriting that aspect of the CRK.
      A friend has one of the ones with an opening hole, and he says it flicks open pretty easily, even with the stiffer washer action. I don't think I like the look of it (or most, at least -- he has a couple different hole shapes) as much, but that's probably the one I'd get if I could do it over again.

      @@KnifeNerdery It was a pretty long video on both ends but I do remember some time points. So in your first video at (55 minutes) you have this titanium section and it was awesome. So examples are...and I didn't have time to go over everything but.. the Smoke Mini, the EMP Knife (looks gaudy to me), the Thick Boy (not a practical knife or useful in any way), the Lioh Mah knife (overkill in size and not good looking imo), I kind of stopped right there. @@Dracomies hahaha yeah, I agree on all of the ones you mentioned. Except the Smoke Mini. I adore that knife. But I am not much of a fan of the EMP Nymble; the Thick Boy is delightful from a tactile sensation way, definitely not an elegant knife; and the Field Duty 3.5 was a FOMO pre-order mistake that I didn't realize was going to be as huge and extra as it is!

      @@KnifeNerdery That's one thing I'm noticing with knife purchases! Some are completely discontinued or are limited so you have to roll a dice on some of these. Meanwhile I'm searching through the earth to find the pena knives x series apache large and it's nowhere to be found haha.

      @@Dracomies Ooo, yeah, that one is so good. I hope you can find one! I've been having a lot of fun learning about some older weird knives lately, but so many of them are just unobtainium. They're either locked away in someone else's collection til the day they die, or they just faded into obscurity and no one has a clue where they went.

    Tactical Rockwall detent is bollocks. Mine fell out too. So in my books they are shit and not worth all the praise they get. Absolute pain in the arse when you have to send the back from Australia. Plus I paid $23 aust to post it back and charged $50 us to get it back!

      You could have just bought a .062" ball for like 2 cents (what's that, $10 aud?) and fixed it yourself...
      Their QC is awful, why would you trust their warranty to be worth $75?

      Ooof, the international shipping insult to injury. Really sorry to hear that, man!
      Like I said in the video, I really want Tactile to succeed -- they're nice folks trying to do something really cool -- and they do have serious machining chops! But the "growing pains" stage of the business seems to lasting a lot longer than I'd hoped. I still believe they can turn that around, but it'll require doubling down on QC over rapid growth.

    QUESTION: do you carry all of your knives.

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  Год назад +1

      Nah, I've just got way too many, so a) some sit for months without even being picked up, and b) some I bought specifically to experience and understand their mechanics, and they aren't actually something I'd want to carry. A good example of that is the Attaboy that I got to experience and dissect the Deadbolt Lock; but it's a chunky little knife that I'm not actually interested in carrying.
      But I have carried the vast majority of my knives, and my highest end pieces are nearly all regular users.

    so many knives with holes in the blade - why?

    • @KnifeNerdery
      @KnifeNerdery  6 месяцев назад

      Simply put: so I can reverse flick them! That opening method remains my favorite way to open knives by a significant margin, so I'm naturally drawn to knives that facilitate that.
