  • 3B Umpire and Crew Chief Joe West ejected Blue Jays pitcher Ryan Borucki and pitching coach-not-manager Pete Walker after Borucki hit Kevin Kiermaier with the first pitch of Tampa Bay's 8th inning. Report: www.closecalls...
Two days earlier, Kiemaier upon being tagged out to end a half inning on a play at the plate picked up a scouting card dropped by Toronto and took the card to the Rays dugout. The Blue Jays were reportedly upset after the incident occurred and Rays manager Kevin Cash issued an apology to Toronto skipper Charlie Montoyo.
Warnings had not previously been issued.

Hopefully that pitch settled the dispute with him picking up cards that don't belong to him. Great job by Joe keeping his calm when the Blue Jays pitching coach came out and you could see Joe tell the manager to get control of his coach. For newer umpires this is imperative that you don't argue or discuss anything with a coach and only the manager. This takes the heat off of the situation and now the manager has to deal with the coach and really deescalates the entire situation as you can see after the coach left Joe and the manager had a very civil conversation.

Question for any trained umpires reading this:
You’re approached between innings by the manager of a team in the Blue Jays situation from the Monday game. He explains that an opposing player had picked up a scouting card which had fallen out of the uniform of one of his players during the course of play. The ersatz Blue Jays had asked the opposing team to return the card, and the opponents had refused to do so. He is asking you to intercede and require the opposing team to return the scouting card. Do you do so?

[Our hypothetical manager doesn’t think the situation is specifically covered in the rulebook, but knows that umpires have the authority to make rulings in such situations even if he can’t cite the exact rule (which I believe is 8.01 (c) ) ]

If the player or non-player gets suspended then it is more than likely that he will be serving the suspension while his team is playing a(some) team(teams) other than the team that was the "victim" of the offense that the player or non-player was suspended for. I think that is something MLB needs to look into. What if that pitcher is suspended while his team is playing another team that is still in the hunt for the playoffs just like the Rays? That other team would actually get to take advantage of the Blue Jays team's weakened pitching staff rather than the Rays.

As a centerfielder he plays the entire outfield as though he doesn't trust his left or his right fielder. Stealing Toronto's Scouting Card, and then refusing to give it back is what got him a 93 mph pitch to his back. I sat in center field yesterday first row along the homerun wall. In the pre-game practice a ball landed a few feet away. Our entire section were asking Kiermaier for the ball, even waiting five minutes for him to come over and give the ball away to someone in our seating section. The dude pretended he was going to give the ball away to fans, and then simply walked away with the ball telling fans he didn't owe them crap. @@michaelfalkner1186 It's been explained on previous ejection videos (the most recent explanation was following Tony LaRussa's ejection last week, linked at end of reply; around the 2m23s mark of the video) under Rule 6.02(c)(9):
"(9) Intentionally Pitch at the Batter.
      (1) If, in the umpire’s judgment, such a violation occurs, the umpire may elect either to:
      (A) Expel the pitcher, *or* the manager and the pitcher,
      from the game, or
      (B) may warn the pitcher and the manager of both teams that another such pitch will result in the immediate expulsion of that pitcher (or a replacement) and the manager.
If, in the umpire’s judgment, circumstances warrant, both
teams may be officially “warned” prior to the game or at any time during the game."

B.S. it was intentional, but I don't toss a pitcher here. It's the only way to make a point in baseball. I like, warn after this pitch. Everything is good. And picking up the card? Duh.

Reading other comments, I'm missing context. But I still think you don't need to eject when everyone knows this is a likely event here. But, I suppose an umpire needs to be consistent and simply apply the rules. It was certainly intentional and if your catcher drops his card... no way I'm not picking it up.

Blue Jays announcers trying to say it wasn't intentional or that the umpires could have just ignored it is comical.. Also, why hit a guy when the card fell out on the field? maybe don't have cards in the wristbands that explain the whole gameplan? (this is coming from somebody who hates wristbands in baseball and softball in my defense)

The pitching coach was so mad because he didn’t want to use another picture from the bullpen. At this point of the season every picture is meaningful. You want to save your pictures for games that are either very close or if your in the lead and you need a good save. The Rays player should never have STOLE the scouting card.

I'm a Rays fan but I just lost a lot of respect for KK. Anyone should want to beat the opponent fair and square and this is just flat out low and dishonest.

That's been KKs reputation with other teams. Jomboy did a breakdown on him stealing fly balls from the other outfielders and the comments on that video are full of Kiermaier stans.
