I already prefer it over the Bose for bass, and I own both speakers. While the bass on the Bose product is more pronounced and louder on some material, it doesn’t go extremely deep. The JBL, however, has a more “flat sound” signature, meaning that while the bass might not be as pronounced, the bass, treble, and mid/vocal range are all balanced with each other: about the same volume. On top of this, the bass on the JBL actually extends far deeper. On the JBL, I can tell what instrument is used for the bass, not so with the Bose. The professional term for this is “tight” or “accurate.” Bassically, (pun intended), If you turn the bass up, it might sound better on the JBL than it does on the Bose.
@@djijspeakerguy4628 I agree. I guess from owning various Bose speakers, the JBL Charge almost sounds as if its covered by a towel or I'm listening to it behind a closed door. There's some type of muffled sound that I can't get used to. Same goes for the Sony XE300.
had the opposite experience, JBL charge 5 sounds like a blanket is over the speakers and the bass seems artificial while the Bose has quicker bass and more articulacy down low.
The front of the Flex isn’t plastic. From Bose office site -> “To ensure further protection from water, dust, and debris, the transducer and passive radiators underneath the steel grille are built with rugged, waterproof materials and sealed tightly to the speaker’s housing.”
Dang, this is a tough one. Honestly, I feel like the Bose is better. In my personal experience, the Bose just has a beautiful, crystal clear and rich sound. I’ve never heard a speaker (especially of that size) with such a beautiful sound to it. The vocals are crystal clear and the bass is punchy but not overpowering. It’s so perfectly balanced. The JBL is louder and maybe has more bass, but I don’t think it has that magical warmth and richness of the Bose. It’s more a mainstream speaker that gets loud and thumps but that’s about it whereas the Bose Flex has a beautiful sound. That’s just my opinion though :) I’ve had JBL’s before, but the Bose Flex has been my favorite and most impressive speaker yet.
@@ChilledFossilofficial I agree - that’s a great way of describing it. The JBL is definitely more of a party speaker while the Bose is great for indoors.
I was also surprised by the Bose, and I own both. I like both speakers equally, because I found on the JBL that the upper bass seems less pronounced, meaning the bass instruments sound more like actual instruments. The bass on the JBL also goes deeper. I do agree with you on the clear treble on the Bose product, which is actually something that Bose has failed to impress me with in the past. I think the JBL has a better midrange (vocals, guitar, trumpet, etc.) though, and overall sounds better with something like classical music. Honestly, I don’t regret getting both, because I find I will use them for different purposes! This particular Bose product, the Soundlink Flex, is really the only Bose product that I’ve ever thought was really worth the price. Bose really listened to their customers here, and it’s honestly better than some more expensive Bose speakers.
The upper bass is louder on the Bose, but the JBL extends deeper. I have both. They are definitely different. Those “subwoofers” you are mentioning on the JBL are just metal membranes that vibrate under the pressure of the main driver on the front, and are tuned much like a bass reflex port. The reason why they use them is because it is essentially a sealed box that acts like a ported one, so it can be waterproof.
@@rayallen4967depends on what is important for you if you want it louder and with 8 hours more battery then jbl but I think Bose has better sound and is more compact
Jbl sound signature reminds me of kicker speakers, highs so bright it hurts and Tin can ish, I’ve tried many different brands but I always come back to 3 Sony, Bose and klipsh
I bought a Charge 5 and am not impressed with the sound quality. Tin can ish is a good description, though the bass is quite good and volume is excellent. It's going back to the retailer. My several years old Bose Soundlink Mini isn't loud but sound quality is outstanding.
I have a Charge 5 (the extreme 3's little brother) I find the biggest takeaway is lack of the aux port meaning I cant wire it to my phone or other device for playing games since using Bluetooth without at least aptx built in the latency is way to high however I know usb audio is possible on the device and with the ability to push firmware updates I know my chance is next to 0% but I just hope someone at JBL sees one of my comments and adds a Toggle in there app for audio over usb!
I'm a bass person and I'm always a big fan of jbl speakers! I'm from a jbl xtreme 2 and I'm thinking of painting 2 charge 5 so that way it could possibly sound like the xtreme 3
Actually, funnily enough, I like the charge 5 better than my xtreme 2. The treble seems clearer and more accurate. Also, JBL has recently come out with an equalizer on their app for the charge 5, so you can turn the bass up if you want. Two JBL charge 5s will be louder than one, but not any more bass-heavy.
An apples and coconuts review. The Bose is a go-anywhere travel speaker. The Charge 5 is much less transportable. In general, a bigger speaker makes a bigger sound.
I think you are comparing apples and oranges. If you want to compare the Bose Flex to a jBL product, compare it to the JBL Flip 6. It is JBL’s direct competitor for the Bose Flex, and is intended to be used in the same way.
Thank you for making this video so quickly! I was having a hard time finding information about the Bose. I would use the JBL Charge 5 in my bedroom or at the beach!
Portability, sound quality, and form factor Bose wins IMO… while JBL is a nice speaker is larger, heavier, and not as portable. Just because it’s “big” Doesn’t mean it’s better 😉 well, that’s what she said! 🤣
You have been drenching the Bose speaker in a jar of water from the beginning and yet you didn't give Bose the due credit for making a totally water proof speaker? That would be the the greatest selling point for Bose and for your comparison and you missed the point.
In my bose soundink review I just went over the bose and really tested the sound and durability in a lake. This video is more focused on what each is best at, and yes for active situations, where the bose takes a beating it was the clear winner. For resting in place/parties it has to be the JBL. Both* are waterproof with ip64, but I'm giving jbl away so I didn't want to drench it ;)

JBL C5 is larger so not a fair comparison. Compare the Bose Flex with a smaller JBL model the same size and the Bose wins. JBL speakers have a harsh sound when you turn them up. The Bose sound stays smooth.
