  • On 23rd June 1993 Nottingham Forest signed Stan Collymore.
The powerful front man joined The Reds the summer after their relegation to Division One, but his form aided their bounce straight back to the big time.
And in his second season at the club Collymore scored 22 Premier League goals helping Forest finish third, qualifying for the UEFA Cup in the process.
Collymore, who cost the club an initial £2million, made 78 appearances for The Reds, scoring 45 goals.
He left for Liverpool in the summer of 1995, but would not be forgotten.

@@englishlion6287 Nope.. Just watching him play again is such a joy. In his full pomp he was World Class. Very Henry like at times, just how seems to find ten millions years of space from seemingly nowhere with one touch... And if he doesnt? He just wriggles through a few defenders and slots it in the bottom corner.

Collymore was a fantastic striker - certainly up there with the best I have seen. He never quite realised his full potential as an international but we had some amazing years with him at Forest. A truly gifted player but you don’t get to be as good as that without a lot of hard work too.

Stan was as talented as any of the masses of top English strikers back in the 90s and really could of been anything he wanted. Obviously other issues stopped him realising his enormous potential. He probably should've gone to Man Utd back in 95 when they were interested before they signed Andy Cole. Completely two-footed, could score tap-ins or long range screamers, good in the air and could hold up a ball and also play down the flanks, Collymore had it all but was a wasted talent for me. Everton fan.

    • @richardjones3792

Very accurate, didn't have the mentality, I believe he was fergusons first choice but he ended up buying Andy Cole instead. Collymore should've ended up with 150+ premier league goals.

What a powerful, direct, skillful player he was coming through. Never fulfilled his full potential, I recogn. A bit like Anelka. Huge talent. Impossible to knock off the ball, in full flow he flattened defenders, had a missile of shot.

This is a player who should have had far more success than he did. His partnership with Robbie Fowler at Liverpool was one of the best I'd ever seen - until a certain Michael Owen came along, which effectively ended Collymore's career (and Fowler's to some degree) at Liverpool, which I thought was really sad, as he was still an amazing player. Naturally, he went on to another club but Villa destroyed him. A crap manager and I don't think Colly wanted to leave either. He had a window of about 4 years of greatness. Too small for a man of such great calibre as Collymore.

PVH did fuck all in the Premier League though. Stan got us promoted and then finished 3rd the next season. PVH spat his dummy out the pram and left us with shite like Shipperley and Freedman until he came back to score about 6 goals and down we went. And when we signed Van Hooijdonk we were out of the relegation zone, he scored 1 in 8 after spending £4.5m on him (probably about £80m in today's money) and we got relegated. He was a fantastic dead ball specialist but did nothing for us at the highest level. Not fit to lace Stanley Victor Collymore's boots...or Bryan Roy's...or Peter Withe's...or Tony Woodcock's...or Garry Birtles's...or Trevor Francis's...or Nigel Clough's...or Teddy Sheringham's. Lee Chapman and Nigel Jemson bagged more goals at the highest level for us. Even Freedman has a better Premier League record than him (9 in 31 as opposed to 8 in 29).

It's a shame we don't/can't see some of the old generation, my dad saw Gary Birtles at Long Eaton UTD, marvelled how much time he had on the ball, he took me as a young boy to see collymore in our promotion and 1st amazing prem season under Frank. He said no one had ever made him get to his feet as quick as Collymore, but Storey Moore was better, for him at least. Players from this generation will soon be long forgotten.

Such a confidence player. When he was feeling it, he'd just have a go all the time and catch the goalkeeper out so often. Just a pity he'd drift out of games, lose concentration, and end up not quite getting back into it. He could still have recovered when he left Liverpool, but Villa was the worst choice he could have made. A club that famously sucked the skill out of their forwards year after year. He'd have been a better fit for West Ham, Chelsea or pretty much anyone else.
