Very interesting video, thanks for sharing your experience. But I was wondering since you're editing off the hard drive...was it necessary to get the m1 max which is more expensive, louder, hotter and has worse battery life than the m1 pro. Not that I know all the details about how you use your machine but it looks to me to be an overpowered laptop hampered by the hard drive. And I think the m1 pro should have been plenty especially considering that you're coming form a 2012 laptop. With that been said, there is no denial that your laptop is a formidable one and one of the best if not the best overall in the world.👍
The M1 Pro definitely was an option I had in mind! However, I run design programs simultaneously and wanted the most flawless experience possible. (It’s been awesome!) plus, if I’m going to be using the same computer for the next 10 years I definitely want the best I can get, considering the new skills I’ll have to adapt and learn to do in my field. Hopefully it pays off 🤞🏼
Even if it’s potentially slower, it’s actually recommended if it’s really really really important files to edit on an external because if the computer crashes it could wipe everything internally so it’s always highly recommended to save a back up in an external hard drive, even if you cut your performance a little bit.
The fact that this video pops up in my feed soon after i upgraded from my 2013 Mac to the 2021 14 inch M1 Pro is just amazing. As a photographer who is constantly using PS and Premiere this new device is a blessing. Now i can get large sets of files edited on the go and not lose time waiting to get back home to edit in my desktop.

Remember to remove the keyboard cover when You are closing laptop as it can damage Your screen. Otherwise, great choice! I am planning to get myself one once M2 Max is out. ❤
I have the keyboard cover in matte ( not plastic magnet ) after 9 months and no screen damage. Because the screen lid has a thin plastic to avoid touching on the ground once it's closed.
@@steffdia7080 still, it might happen the moment when a little bit more pressure is put on the lid (closed).for example when travelling and so on, so yeah, I’d remove that when the lid is closed.
I had NO IDEA that I should do this! My old laptop's anti-glare coating was coming off for years, even without having a keyboard cover on it. Really annoying. Thank you so much for your comment. Have fun with your M2 Max!
She has nice video, but i cant understand so many covers. I never ever scratched keyboard and i am scratch master... Only thing i use with my 14 mbp is black leather case and i love it.
I also just upgraded from 2014 to 2021 Macbook Pro M1 Max 16". :) worth the money since I'm also a graphic design student and uses a lot of the programs! My workflow is so much better and quicker!
A very interesting video. It is amazing that your previous laptop was a 2012 Mac. That is significant longevity. It was helpful to learn why you made some of your system configuration choices. Thank you and good luck with your studies.
Still on a souped up mid 2012 here. Started looking at the new 14" recently and keep getting recommended videos like this one. Congrats on the big upgrade! I like that boxy look. Tempted to wait for the m2 pro but it might not even be a major improvement. In any case I think internal storage space is actually a good improvement when the machine does a lot of memory swap and uses the ssd it can help longevity. Maybe less so when having 64gb of ram, though! I was thinking of sticking with 16gb and getting 2tb as I don't do anything crazy demanding.
Thank you so much! I was also tempted to wait for the M2, but I remember reading a while back while I was researching that the M2 (the first) was only 35% faster than the M1, meaning the M2 would be slower than the M1 Pro, M1 Max, and M1 Ultra! This is the article I got that info from: www.tomshardware.com/news/apple-m2-gpu-analysis
Getting the 14 inch maxed out macbook pro is great, next get a camera upgrade so you can edit 4k video. im currently using the 2017 mid 15 inch macbook pro and it runs everything from 3D modeling to Video editing and even coding. video editing is a bit of a challenge because i sometimes run out of my 16gb of RAM because davinci resolve is a hog sometimes when i get crazy with stacking footage and stuff but other than that i feel like you go the right macbook especially for what your doing with it. Love the Videos keep up the good work!!!
Thank you so much for your support! Such good info, thank you. I have heard amazing things about DaVinci, but haven't made the leap with the learning curve yet. You sound like you know what you're doing!
Yes! Over the years I’ve replaced it two or three times. It was just time for an upgrade since it kept crashing, it couldn’t handle larger files, and even had trouble running chrome!
Great vid , I would say if your still able to, try and see if you can switch it to a standard m1 pro chip just because supposedly a m1max chip combined with a 14 inch Mac causes the 14 in Mac to get a bit hotter since the form factor is smaller compared to 16inch . Not saying it’s super bad but definitely worth noting , regardless the new macs are so freaking good
Nice! I went through a similar upgrade, except I've had my 2012 MBP 15 since 2013! I got the Pro, but the Max is definitely where it's at for longevity, after all, these things aren't upgradeable. As for heat, you must be used to managing it coming from a 2012! Keeping the vents clear, maintaining the gap beneath the laptop and minimising unnecessary CPU and GPU loads during sustained high load operations should keep you well within operating spec.
@@nikitacekay I'm enjoying using it! I've been playing a couple of games on it, and video chatting with friends during my short break. How are you enjoying yours?

Few things, try not to use a keyboard cover, can break ur screen because the clearance between the monitor and the keyboard is already too less. Secondly, order a new screen protector and get it installed by a professional, a phone repair or laptop repair or retail store. And no keeping stuff on your computer doesn't slow it down. You have 32GB RAM, that's a lot. And modern day expensive high quality SSDs have really good controllers and they have reserved space so that you don't fill it up completely. Although you do are correct partially that if you work with really large files on and off, it is better to do it on an external HDD cause SSDs have a limited TBW and can die if you write very large files on and off daily or weekly for years. Congratulations for your purchase it's amazing.

You maxed out the 14” model. I am curious if that would thermal throttle the CPU. The max settings maybe great in the 16” model where there is more space for cooling and battery.

if you was gonna drop that type of cash, you should of waited for the MBP M2 MAX that macbook is like $4,000+
It was a debate to either wait or to go ahead with the M1 Max. But, unfortunately, my computer had trouble handling files I was currently working on, so it was time. Always the struggle with tech, the next, newest version is always coming, isn't it?

My 2012 MBP had issues with the anti-glare coating wearing off in the pattern of the keyboard! I really wish I had used a screen protector to prevent that.
Mbp 2021 not 2022 but nice video lol.
