  • Academic work is more than an intellectual experience. It requires being creative; being able to recognize and generate ideas, possibilities and solutions. Here are 3 ways to nurture your creativity.
Number 1: Soothe Your Nervous System. Anxiety and dysregulation stifle creativity by putting you into a hypervigilant, self-protective mode. Creativity thrives in a more relaxed state where your mind is freer to explore novel ideas and connections. To stay better connected to your creative self, prioritize soothing & settling your nervous system.
Number 2: Lower Your Standards: It’s easy to be over focused on "getting it right" and under focus on exploration and experimentation in your work. If you want to be creative, you need the freedom to do so. Learn to temporarily lower your standards and shift your focus from the final product to the creative process itself.
Number 3: Slow Down: Natalie Goldberg wrote about writing: “If you're having difficulty coming up with good ideas, slow down.” Slowing down allows us to arrive in the moment and open to ideas and innovations. She says “creativity exists in the present moment. You can't find it anywhere else.”
