I agree, but in most of the world- woman are 2nd class humans. Even in countries were women have equal rights- there isn't equality. Look what happens in America, canada, western Europe & Australia to women that report rapes. Or how many rapist see jail or repeat rapist of children that get out after a year. I actually used to work with traveller girls and they said that the programme is very accurate except for the grabbing. Apparently they really would just come up behind you and make you jump and ask for a kiss and you can say no. They said that they exaggerated it a lot for the programme so that's worth knowing I think

To be clear, what you are witnessing on that show was as much of a shock to me as it was to you - & I'm a Traveller. I've been to countless weddings and functions and I have not once seen anything like this. The nearest we get is a boy trying to sweet-talk a girl, maybe try and sneak a kiss, and there might be a bit of playfighting - but *nothing* that's actually aggressive like that. A girl's reputation is hugely important in my community, so if someone grabbed her like that, her family would be out defending her in a heartbeat and the lad responsible would wish he'd never been born. I'm assuming it's been made up for TV, because this horrific, violent "grabbing" just doesn't happen.
@@georgina-a Right, I have realised these shows make pretty gross scenes to attract audience. A Gypsy told me that they made the “grabbing” thing up for views but I’m not sure.
@@ILovePink-x1v I suspect that the Gypsy you spoke to was right, because I've never seen it happen and I don't know anyone who has ever partaken in "grabbing". I know that anyone who attacked a woman like that in front of Travellers would rue the day they were born, though... This TV show has a lot to answer for... It makes me so angry that they describe it in the trigger warning as "an Irish Traveller courtship ritual". Firstly, we're not wildlife, we don't have "courtship rituals" (you can almost hear it in Attenborough's voice, can't you?! 😂) & secondly, that is no tradition of mine (& I come from a huge Irish Traveller family - none of whom have heard of it). The women in my family have always demanded (& received) respect. Have you ever seen the shots of the young girls dancing inappropriately on the show? I went to a wedding where they were filming and this is how they got the shots: they went over to a group of girls who were sat chatting and minding their own business (as kids at every type of wedding do) & asked them to dance "like they see in the music videos". They told them the best girls would be on TV and the very best girl would win £20. Told them they "wanted to show the world that Traveller weddings are fun". The girls were young and did it, believing it was innocent and positive... For about a minute, until one girl's Mammy saw, went ballistic, and put a stop to it. They chopped that tiny bit of footage of those 8 girls into little segments, cropped out the empty dance floor so it looked full if dancing kids, and sprinkled it throughout the reception footage to make it look like it was happening constantly at the wedding. Again, shock value for views, at the expense of our community's reputation 😕
“Grabbing” is assault soooo not sure why we dont just call it that. They might have a little traditional word for it but it should be called what it is during these documentations. This girl was sadder than anything to leave her mom. So sad. She’s scared and why not, chances are the relationship started out with her being “grabbed”
ok so apparently this was played up for the show to make the culture more shocking. According to people in the comments who're actually part of the community they usually just pick you up and immediately put you down, to give you a little shock, then ask for a kiss which you can decline. I'm not saying that's right either but it's a lot better than what's being shown.
@Traveller Myths That's the same as Ala Kachuu (bride kidnapping) in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Vietnam (mainly H'Mông people), Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova Roma gypsies (kalderash) endorse child marriages. Rohingya families rid themselves of their daughters through forced/child marriages to paedophiles in Bangladesh, Malaysia.
@Traveller Myths would you be able to tell us if the daughters can see their family after they get married? I'm confused if its just moving from the family home, or if they don't see their family at all after. Thank you
The niece giving props at the end 👏🏾. Seems like her mom did do the best she could. Coming from a single mom household with less turmoil and struggle as other children I knew with both parents, her mom did an awesome job. 👌🏾.

Her mom is such a brave Lady. Many traveller women suffer in silence with domestic violence. She is one of very few to stand up and say no! Well done and I wish her the best.

Wtf.... seriously. This girl not once looked happy. They weren’t even looking at each other during wedding at all. That was heartbreaking to watch... but THEN they end it with this grabbing crap! That looked like girls getting raped to me. What in the world is going on here. Someone grab my daughter like that, and they would never be able to walk, talk, or grab anything again the rest of their life.
As someone who was sexually assaulted when I was younger, this scene made me feel physically sick and is so upsetting to watch. Call it what they want but it's assault pure and simple. Please know you can still get married and continue your education. There is even online classes. Anything your heart desires as a profession or open your own business will make you feel respected and worthy. Your marriage will just be part of your life. All of that will be what your known for!
It’s not just getting married that’s the problem; it’s the way they treat marriage. These girls will be expected to take care of their husbands as if they are children and then have children and do all the work of taking care of them. It would be hard to have time for school around all that.
@@believeinyourself7511 a generation of women deferred marriage and put career first. Now they are single in middle age/ age related infertility has caught up with them and they are freezing their eggs or having to remain childless and not necessarily through choice. I'm not saying the travellers are right to marry so young and for the women to not be educated / capable of financially supporting themselves independently but 'settled folk' haven't necessarily got things entirely right either. A career alone won't necessarily lead to happiness- a balanced life is what leads to happiness (career/ family/ friends/ spirituality all in sync, as far as is possible)
Okay, the "couples" whole demeanor at the wedding ceremony was heartbreaking. I left a marriage too when literally EVERYONE was telling me not to. "You're married now put up with it..." Like fuck no you don't just "put up" with abuse! Smh!

@@CarlosHernandez-ko9su yes, because from all of these clips I’ve seen of traveller communities, they say that they take their girls out of education/school at around 14-16, and that continuing education is usually looked dow upon ( but I do assume that that’s more stricter travellers)
@Traveller Myths But what Confuzzeled Marshmallow said is true. Of all the traveller/gypsy videos I've watched, they say the girls leave school around age 14-16 and focus solely thereafter on learning the skills of being a homemaker and mother. And this info hasn't come from random commenters, but was stated by the traveller girls and their parents themselves.
@Traveller Myths So the show chooses mostly from that bottom 15% who are foolish and silly? Which makes traveller women look silly, not intelligent, shallow, and you not qualified for anything but taking care of the home and popping out babies?
@Traveller Myths Maybe you should tell the Traveller support group Pavee Point about this. They too are under the impression most Travellers leave education about 15/ 16 for girls and boys leave even younger. Your family might be the exception not the other way around.
I’m literally so disgusted like I couldn’t even watch the whole thing. Imagine going to a wedding and seeing your daughter grabbed and her screaming no and just letting this random men take her. Literally no one stopped any of those men like it’s terrifying to me.
It's disguising and infuriating! I couldn't tell if the girls were going along with tradition and pretending to be scared while those boys were pretending to be rough or if they were actually being rough and the girls were truly terrified. It's sickening and surely past time to put an end to that tradition.
@@therealmsdelight I hope it was acting on both sides. The boy acts dominant, the girl acts scared, they get out of sight and giggle a bit... I doubt that's what's happening, but I hope it is.

Clearly, I will never ever be able to be a Gypsy wife. If a man grabs me I will beat the living s@it out of him. Here in South Africa we usually say you are not married to a man, a man is married to an South African Woman. We are a force unto ourselves. 😆
Every group likes something different. It makes humans interesting. I just wish the girls had choice and education. Who knows we could have a traveller scientist, writer, nurse or psycologist. Anything is possible.
I think this is one of the best posts I've seen for a video like this. Its nice to see people wanting the best for others instead of tearing them down. I also appreciate the show for not being sensationalized like others.
Whilst a domesticated life is the norm for most Traveller girls, more and more families are allowing their daughters to make choices about their education and when they want to marry. I come from a Traveller family, I'm female, I didn't marry as a teenager and, instead, I went to university. I'm now a doctor working in the NHS, I love my job, and my family are really proud of me. After her children had grown up, my cousin (with the blessing of her husband) decided that she, too, wanted to restart her education. God willing, next summer she will graduate as a nurse. It wasn't that long ago that everybody lived in a trailer but now more and more Travellers live in houses. I very much doubt that we'll ever lose all of the old ways, but we're definitely evolving as a culture.
I have seen more families letting their daughters go onto college and work. Thelma (the dress maker) runs training programs and hires traveler girls. Their culture changes with the times just as any other culture. Gypsy culture in America is nothing like this! Nowhere near as strict with many being quite “trashy” almost.
Good on her for not accepting a violent partner regardless of tradition!! She is so brave and strong to go against "the normal" show the next generation that they don't have to go through this pain and suffering because that's not love, nor being part of a partnership nor respect to your wife

The dress lady said something really said in my opinion. She said these girls dream of their wedding, being a princess and all of that, but in the end many of them don’t marry princes so they go back to their domestic lifestyle as before.

Watching these documentaries makes you realise how much freedom you actually have. I understand it is tradition and it is all a part of their culture, but just the thought of having to marry someone before the age of 21 is terrifying. These girls are literally children and they haven't even reached adulthood yet.
@@georgina-a I could easily believe that.
@Traveller Myths so why do people that say they are travlers confirm it over and over again then? So far just seen you saying it's not happening.

I hate how they had to to call him disabled and couldn’t just call him her brother. Unless it’s important to know then they shouldn’t be calling him disabled like that’s all he is. As a disabled person, this is one of the things the disabled community hates the most. We are more then our disabilities.

@@mrsleigh7806 So true. Back in the day American women had to do the same thing. Luckily most of us went back to school like college.
They looked both unhappy, forced and when she put the ring on his finger, it appeared as if she didn't want to touch him while he didn't really offer his hand. This is sad. Nobody seems to be ready for that marriage and yet everyoneet it happen.
Out of the comments I have read, this is the only one that makes sense. They are still kids you can clearly tell. The guy doesn't understand a single thing about relationships let alone marriage. It's quite sad when they are both clueless and expected to live together for life and uild a family
And he's standing there with his hands in his pockets. Not respecful of the ceremony at all.
I thought I saw someone say the bride was pregnant. If this was true, and this was a shotgun wedding, the demeanor of the couple makes sense.
@@nanodon4 I had to do a double take when the bride walks around her dress in one shot. It looked like she had a bump, I hate assuming that about women and much less a girl her age, but it almost looked like she did.

I feel for you , sister, I am RIGHT there with you. I left my verbally abusive ex, despite him guilt tripping me saying "but , our vow!! Our vow!!" But an abuser has already broken THEIR vow.
“We’re travellers we can make anything happen” Yh except giving girls an education or freedom
@@CarlosHernandez-ko9su yes, because from all of these clips I’ve seen of traveller communities, they say that they take their girls out of education/school at around 14-16, and that continuing education is usually looked dow upon ( but I do assume that that’s more stricter travellers)
Down**
@Traveller Myths But what Confuzzeled Marshmallow said is true.
I hope the bride and her mom get to spend lots of time together even if she’s married… lovely dress and I bet that cake was great….
The grabbing is just disgusting.
I’m horrified. God help the man that does that to my daughter. Her father and I would literally beat him to death. 🤌🏼 Literally. To death.
If it starts with ownership then you've got a situation of domestic violence right from the beginning

That clip was genuinely so disturbing. Nothing ever really bothers me, but that one clip absolutely disgusted me. That was such a horrible thing to watch and I had to skip over it immediately. Makes you really thankful for what you've got in your own life.
Her mother is a very strong women who truely put her children first, she showed her children what is not acceptable and that they do not have to just put up with any form of abuse that so many do, the kids know that they can survive on their own if they have too.that’s the biggest gift the mother gave her children the knowledge something no cake or dress could do!
Clearly, I will never ever be able to be a Gypsy wife. If a man grabs me I will beat the living s@it out of him. Here in South Africa we usually say you are not married to a man, a man is married to an South African Woman. We are a force unto ourselves. 😆
Amen from a fellow South African wife 🤣
These aren't Gypsies, they're Travellers. Big difference.
Oh no they can only be baby makers! How dare you thinking woman should have a choice when it comes to her life at all.

Watching these documentaries makes you realise how much freedom you actually have. I understand it is tradition and it is all a part of their culture, but just the thought of having to marry someone before the age of 21 is terrifying. These girls are literally children and they haven't even reached adulthood yet. The thought that you'd be married in your teens with the knowledge that your duty is to become a full time housewife for the rest of your life is scary. Women don't seem to have a lot of freedom when it comes to their future, it is all pretty much written out for them the day they're born. It is quite sad. It all seems so old fashioned.
