    *CORRECTION* The Paddle shifters behind the wheel are NOT for shifting, but for regenerative braking. My mistake!

      Glad you caught that. I was just about to leave a comment about it. It’s great for saving your brakes going down hill and charging the batteries at the same time. I like to use them to slow the vehicle when changing from higher to lower speed limit zone. I’ve had my 2021 hybrid crv two weeks and I’m loving it. One drawback. Manual says adding a trailer hitch voids warranty so I’ve got to find another way to transport my bike

      I LOVE using the paddles for regenerative (I call it "dynamic") braking, especially when approaching a light or descending a hill. It reduces wear on the disc brakes and saves fuel as it charges the battery. If I had to suggest one thing for it, it would be to connect it to the brake light logic so that a vehicle following can see that you're slowing down, even if it's momentary. I bought my wife a 2020 CRV Hybrid Touring for her birthday last June and she loves it. The only deficiency I have found in its appointments is that the side mirrors do not automatically tilt downward when backing up on the curb side if you select one or the other with the slide switch, and that the vehicle could use both a little more stowage space in the cargo area as well as a 12V or even 110V convenience power supply in the cargo area as my Crosstour has (12V). The flat induction charger for smartphones in the center console below the shift buttons is ok, but in my opinion the space could have been better used for other things. Just my opinion though. The drive is exceedingly smooth and the pickup is very robust. Nice vehicle!

    Down below: LITERALLY NOT A CVT. Not a transmission at all, actually. Just dual direct drives.
    The noise the engine makes when you floor it has NOTHING to do with a transmission. It’s solely working to provide the electric motor power and RPMs. At highway speeds, only the 2.0 drives the wheels via a single gear. The electric engine disconnects.
    Would LOVE for you to do more research about the products you’re reviewing.

    • @andydufresne3635

    I have 4000 miles on a new 2021 CR-V EX Hybrid. LOVE IT! I'm an old schools Chevy guy, I was not thinking about pulling campers with this purchase. I was looking at toting a family of 3 with groceries, in a Minnesota winter, with AWD, modest amenities, and great fuel mileage. I accomplished all, at a good price. It's a great ride, plenty fast, quiet, comfortable. Handles decent for a Hybrid Compact SUV, but remember it's not an Accord. The safety and comfort creatures all make this a win-win.

  • @robs9182
    @robs9182 4 года назад +26

    3:06 Hey, CR-V Hybrid does not have a CVT! All is done by the electric motor and the engine acts as an generator if needed. That's why it revs when you step on gas. The electric motor needs more power to accelerate the car. Only in certain conditions the transmission connects the engine directly to the drivetrain (high speed)... Do some research, man, as otherwise it's a nice video. 😉

    • @tomvance2721
      @tomvance2721 4 года назад +4

      Honda calls it E-CVT, but there is technically no real CVT/transmission. As already stated it only shifts to the ICE actually when driving over 42 to 45 MPH. Below that it is driven only with the electric motor. The ICE runs only to charge the batteries. So, there will be times when the engine rpm and speed of the car do not seem to match, since the electric motor will be pushing the car, and the ICE is only running to keep the batteries powered. Above 45 mph it is mostly the ICE, but under heavy acceleration it becomes a combination of ICE and electric motor.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 4 года назад +1

      @@tomvance2721 Actually, the Honda hybrid system is a series hybrid system, so it never uses the ICE and electric motors together to power the transaxle. It is designed to use one OR the other only. Toyota’s system is a parallel/series system that can use both.

    I've driven the Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4 & Honda CRV. The CX-5 is definitely the sportiest. I found the RAV4 not as spacious (especially backrow seats) not as spacious as promoted but probably more 'off-roady' than the CRV. Settled on the CRV because in terms of driver/front row and general spaciousness, gas economy and every-day driving--it's the best. Maybe if I was still in my 20s I'd settle for the CX-5. I've noticed RAV4 buyers were motivated primarily by fear of expensive future car/engine repairs.

      what you mean gas economy is the best? RAV 4 got better economy, a bit less spacious but it built and look tougher than crv, and did I tell you better gas economy compare to crv? And hell yes, It is RAV 4 Toyota, they built hybrid for years for RAV 4 already so third party supplier should be able to work on rav 4 hybrid better than crv hybrid

    Great review! One thing I do have to question. Does it really feel like a regular gas CRV? I've never actually driven a gas CRV. I own a 2020 Hybrid, I would assume that the gas pedal feels different, and the engine definitely sounds different when revved. Also I feel like the break pedal would feel different, the break pedal on my Hybrid is very firm at lower speeds, meaning it's hard to come to a soft complete stop. Not a big issue, but I think there probably are some differences with the way it drives.

      I just bought a 2021 CR-V Hybrid Touring on Saturday. I consider myself a pretty discerning audio enthusiast - I prefer a pretty neutral sound - not boomy bass and not bloated. At first the speaker system was a little underwhelming. With all the tone controls set in the middle, it sounded pretty thin - lacking midrange and bass. After adjusting the EQ (Bass +3, Midrange +1, Treble 0, Subwoofer +2), it's actually pretty nice - good balance, nice detail and some surprisingly decent stereo imaging for a car system.

Admittedly I am not a speed merchant, and have been driving without the A/C on for now, however I will be using the A/C as we warm up here in the south so may see a drop in mpg. . As a prior owner of a RAV 4, I looked at the new version, but was turned off by it's hard plastic interior fittings, the CR-V is all round better finished and comfortable. As a driver in my mid 70's comfort, spaciousness and ease of driving was important, along with all the safety features, lots of legroom and cargo space it was the perfect fit for my wife and I.

    It’s really noticeable to me that Honda hasn’t gone full Electric or Full Hybrid yet… even the Clarity is a PHEV. It’s no surprise that Toyota has but here’s the problem. Toyota, like Tesla views their customers as Guinea Pigs. If they need to go full Electric at some point they need proof that their customers will buy them over a competitor’s gas or diesel product. They are like that with all new technologies, they will put it out there to draw in new customers but if it means they have to have significant investments then they want to do some production testing.
    Honda won’t due that because the risk is too high. Now we are seeing Consumer Reports pulling out the rug on Tesla. Tesla owners are reporting some really bad reliability concerns, they are now the worst brand for reliability. Honda has never had that issue because they build the world’s best engines, they won’t go full electric until it is proven, and to this point it is not.
    I’m willing to go electric but lets see if Toyota goes back to gasoline for the Sienna, if they did go full electric on Sienna, which they are not those batteries would be so heavy that the tires would not be able to handle it. This is where consumers are really unaware, because of the weight on the wheelbase you need to use Performance tires, all-seasons are not strong enough. you are putting 1,000 extra pounds on top of the wheels and adding more torque and regenerative braking.
    People love saving on brake pads and rotors, but it’s at the expense of the tires which over time will get so expensive that it actually exceeds the cost of engine maintenance and repair! On top of that you have battery issues after 5 years to worry about, some batteries aren’t even lasting 5 years.
    We really need to watch for technology improvements and quality, for automakers to build all electric they need to replace all of their assembly line equipment, that’s why Honda and GM are going together on this manufacturing plant. There’s significant costs to them and this will take a long time for everyone to go all-in on Electric, and consumers are just not buying in yet, even the EV Evangelists are having second thoughts.

    Also the CVT Is amazing if you put it in sport mode with a charge of half or more it will use both the engine, and the electric motors to accelerate, and mine flys... I've raced a few people off the line to a little above the speed limit, and blew them away lol
