Circles are often made in the direction our culture writes in, Western societies often start circles left to right or clockwise, while Eastern countries like Japan make circles counter clockwise. But there are also indications from Steiner about circles. For children clockwise is incarnating while counter clockwise is excarnating. For adults going counterclockwise might be more appropriate than clockwise as it is a movement towards our spiritual self which we long to connect with. Hope this helps!

For the initial circle, is clockwise a requirement? I find counterclockwise is much more natural a movement for me.
