- Those of you who are in the know may know of a little-known social media app known as iFunny. Far from your Twitter and Facebook and YouChubes, this forum of the socially deranged is host to a menagerie of weirdos, freaks, fucks, and sick fucks.
Since coming on the scene in 2013 it’s mostly flown under the radar in comparison to more mainstream counterparts. Instagram, Reddit, Vine, TikTok, all hold their own weight in the internet sphere of content generation and circulation, but what if I were to tell you that this little spec of soviet spyware actually had one of the most pivotal roles in shaping the online culture of the last decade.
Skeptical?
Reasonably so, but in this video I'll present my argument for the relevance of iFunny as a cultural influencer in the past, present, and future.

I think the reason why ifunny has lasted so long is because of how aggressive the user base(d) is. Whenever someone new or when someone try's to ride off the success of the app they are more than likely going to be immediately bullied off the app by the community.

my favorite thing about ifunny is that it starts these simpler memes and once they reach reddit and get unfunny the people on the app twist it further and make the meme darker each cycle through until all it can do is really dwell in ifunny where use of the meme wont be met with a suspension or account deletion

Going to the topic of generation of memes, I believe ifunny does this so well due to its reward system being the reactions and interactions between users vs likes or internet posts, to the point where people get pissed if they get featured. This requires original and funny content to a niche group rather than trying to pander to the largest group of people as possible.
plus it's users are brutally honest and dont tend to follow other users so 90% of memes going into the void are going to be seen by complete strangers so usually the shit memes get filtered pretty well

There are so many massive memes that genuinely cannot be attributed to anything other than IFunny. Shrek cringe, loose subscriber, kek or cringe, GIFcaptions which didn’t even have any way of being created outside of IFunny until the recent blow up of them on Twitter, etc
iFunny is a special creature. A community so shielded with layers of irony that behavioral analysts would have difficulty discerning the state of mind of many of its members. That is what is so great about the app. That community, though being so toxic it is considered a carcinogen in the state of California, will not disappear when the app inevitably falls apart. The refugees will spread across the internet, taking with them the ideology cultivated in the cesspools of the app. Hopefully, that characteristic political incorrectness will become widespread on the internet again and this age of wokeness on the internet is squashed.

The two places memes, internet lingo and overall internet culture start are iFunny and 4chan, One is never credited due to no one wanting to admit that most of the phrases they use daily were created by people they despise and the other is forgotten due to small userbase. Also I'm surprised Poopmadness with his schitzo posting and most likely illegal scrap shotguns weren't mentioned in explaining iFunny or giving examples.
The list of certified iFunny originals has got me in an iron lung fr, it's like packing everything that's made me laugh for the last 11 years into a minute.
Also, pretty sure we've been around since 2011, since I was using it in Freshman year. The app has been shut down and restarted at least twice if I remember.

JimmyHere and Weest are pretty big examples of big youtubers that got their start on iFunny and now never mention the app. Probably cause they hate it. Weest got bullied relentlessly. I think the general community liked Jimmy tho.
Growing up with ifunny has made my life hard not gonna lie, it molded my sense of humor and it made me not have the same humor normal people would. I remember first seeing ironic memes and liveleak stuff back in the day on ifunny and it left a mark on me. And when vine was still a thing I remember in middle school telling my friends about that it was cringe.
Despite all that tho I made some good friends and memories through the app, some of them i’ll never forget.
I have an irl friend who also happens to have an ifunny and our interactions leave me dying from laughter.
I remember being on the app since about 2012, and I'm still on it today. As much as it's fcked with my humor and worldview, I really do appreciate the countless communities I've hopped between on the app over the years. It really is something special.

Seeing ifunny become popular and main stream would be one of the greatest shit shows on the internet that I would love to see happen.

4Chan had a lot of broad communities and /pol/ and /b/ were basically the only ones churning out the content that attracted attention (to my knowledge, I didn't really do much online until 2015 outside of iFunny and RUclips).
iFunny has no such distinction, and attempting to make it mainstream would immediately turn the most hilarious, vitriolic crap we can put out into mainstream content, likely ushering in some minor cataclysm.
Its good the ifunny is so niche and small, bigger sites produce worse memes. This is because the memes made for larger sites have to follow more rules, appeal to more people, and are made from larger injokes. They are just less funny over all. Im glad ifunny gets no recognition, because otherwise we will go the way of 4chan, and sadly I think we are in that process right now.
For example: an edgy comment on RUclips might get automatically deleted, while an edgy comment on iFunny might have a word or two censored into "noon"

I would be genuinely sad if it ever got truly flooded with outsiders or got shut down by the feds. I would do it all over again as well.

At least Colaws and Kaner have relatively popular RUclips channels so it makes sense why their stuff gets reposted.
With screenshots there is the potential for new users for other social media apps to flood the app and make it even worse than it already is, like we already have enough Feature Creatures we don't need even more.

I’m in the sort of dilemma where I feel sad that I’ll never be able to experience everything the app had to offer (which is impossible but still), and that it’s wasted so much fucking time from my life. I’ve seriously deleted the app at least 100 times not even joking but I keep crawling back cause it’s the only easy place where I can find worthwhile and anonymous info on (survival guides, text posts, and chats with people about politics and religion) and actually funny memes

I believe that Ifunny is about to reach a breaking point. The featured section, as you say, has always been filled with conservative memes. But now, it is completely flooded. Not just are there ONLY non-contextual conservatives memes, but now there are countless barrages of captioned right-wing media reports, based arguments in meme format, and poorly constructed insults against liberals. The bubble, to my eyes, has finally popped and a river of right-wing users from places like Parler and Twitter have heard of what Ifunny is and stormed in number immeasurable.
A LOT of left wing users were showing up around election and alot of communist anarchists too

I’ve had ifunny since sophomore year of highschool. I’m 20 now, and I’ve made a decent amount of memes that circulated through ifunny, and some that still circulate today. Hell, one of the memes I made there somehow ended up on one of my favorite youtubers channel! I would say it’s the only “social media” app that I use nowadays. A few months ago hybridcalesthenics held that ifunny scholarship and the winners got 50 dollars, and me and 4 others won. It was quite fun

Honestly I think making some effort to document ifunny's more interesting stories and events is a worthwhile effort. I personally feel that ifunny is way past it's prime and has kinda just devolved into just news and political discussion so at least making some effort to preserve the funnier moments will be much appreciated for when the app eventually dies. iFunny will migrate to discord servers of roughly 50-60 people that all circle jerked each other and were all subbed to each other. In fact that is basically already happening because I honestly spend more time in discord servers from iFunny than I do on iFunny now.
And in the time since this came out amongus posting has took off
I finally deleted ifunny after like 9 years and it’s literally just because it got annoying. Everyone was terrible and annoying so i left and honestly it was the best choice i ever made, but my personality has been ruined forever

As Element Freak stated the veterans of the app hate it when new people try to act like they are a genuine member or act all chummy with everyone if that makes sense. We aren't a fan of the whole "Forbidden App", "Part of the Ship Part of the Crew", "Rules of Ifunny", etc...
The "rule" of not talking about Ifunny isn't a rule, it's a recommendation. We say don't talk about this app because of what you may have commented and what the content in the app consists of.
Here's a breakdown of what ifunny is comprised of: Extreme Racism, Alt-Right Beliefs, Sexism, Softcore Porn, Anime/Hentai, Misogyny, Tik Toks, Reddit Posts, Shit memes, Wholesome memes, and the rare original meme.
Ex. of being new and saying cringe: There was one person who commented "Part of the Ship Part of the Crew" and they only had 120 days put into the app. This person had zero likes to his comment and 397 replys to it. Almost every comment was some varient of "STFU", die, or telling the person they aren't part of the crew.
Ex. for not talking about it: You made an extremely racist comment or posted a racist meme. Now that you've done that you don't want that coming to light. Bad things could happen if these things came to light. So we don't talk about the app to prevent bad things from happening.
I've been on the app for about 1823 days so I feel like I can speak for the veterans.
I’ve got just over 1600 days on the app, and though ifunny is everything you said and more, what I’ve been noticed is me and the people on ifunny L o v e seeing some fat person doing his best to lost weight, or people with mild to severe disabilities openly loving who they are. Also, there’s been an increase in Christian/religious features.
So even though there may be racism, sexism, and partially radical, the majority of people on the app genuinely care and enjoy people bettering their lives. And the more religious users are beginning to express their beliefs and it gets placed smack dab in featured.
The constant variety of opinions and beliefs quite cool to see, as in Twitter and RUclips and other social media platforms, if someone says something some people don’t agree with, that person is easily reported, given a strike, or just straight banned. On ifunny, it’s hard for someone to be banned unless quite literally the ENTIRE app targets that individual.
I keep editing this comment and adding on because I find ifunny far and away more interesting than most other social media apps, though I’m personally glad that no big influencer has called out ifunny yet. I really don’t want some low information tourists coming in and assuming they know how ifunny works and dulling the reputation of the app.
I have 400 days and I'm not gonna say some "part of the ship part of the crew" bullshit. I love this app and it's hillarious no matter how racist.
