They could just grab a new dress the next day and wear that one, but poor women needed to reuse dresses because they could not afford a large wardrobe. This means that they would have to lift their skirts up so it wouldn’t get dirty, exposing their ankles. Men who saw ankles knew those women were of the common class and shunned!
