Hey, I’m starting at SGU in Jan and I’m quite nervous about the cooking (as my skills are very limited) but I think it would be too expensive to order food on campus everyday. Do you know if there are in ready-made meals/ meals that have already been prepped that you can just pop in the microwave or something easy/simple like that? Or do you know of any food prepping services by any chance? Thank you!

They do sell microwave ready meals at the grocery store but as I mentioned its super expensive because its imported and taxed, I think buying on campus is going to be cheaper than buying the microwave meals. I'd recommend taking instant noodles and other dry goods that are easy for you to prepare and just plan on eating out a lot on campus. Most students on a budget eat subway a lot because its cheaper than in the states since you pay in EC, I believe a footlong comes out to about $5 US. You may also find a local person to make and deliver ready made meals to you, I know some students hire a chef to do weekly meal prep on their behalf but I don't know what the rates would be, you can likely find someone willing to do it around the same price as Subway. Good luck on the island!

Not really, if you try an order anything online it will arrive in the one port in St. Georges and you would have to go pick it up and pay taxes at a few different government buildings to claim any online purchases or deliveries from family or friends overseas. I have never done this but heard it can be a tedious process. The officials would open the package and tax each item individually.

Hey! I’m an incoming MS1 this August and I was wondering if it would be cheaper to order the same thing everyday on campus vs meal prepping given the inflation of prices. Also would you recommend bringing a kurig/rice cooker or is there a good chance that I could buy one secondhand from students? Any information would be greatly appreciated and your videos are so helpful.

Hi and welcome to the SGU family, students often do sell the items they brought to island but I don't know how common a rice cooker would be since I don't recall seeing many for sale at the end of the term. I do remember some selling kurigs but it might be a risk coming to island without one as most students sell after semester so try and secure one before you come in the fall since a lot of students are looking for stuff and not much is sold then. I think the cost is pretty similar to eating on campus and meal prepping I did both since I would get tired of the food on campus and then tired of the limited food options at the grocery store but since I made this video a new grocery has opened up in LAE so that might give you better options I hear the new grocery is great!

It really depends on what vegetable you are looking to purchase in general buying direct from farmers is cheaper than the grocery store
