Thanks for sharing. Appreciate that you share the good, the bad, and the ugly. Glad nobody was hurt. Dead standing trees are definitely the most dangerous.
Brings back memories of my older brother and me. He was cutting down a tall maple tree I was backing our 584 tractor up to load the wood. I had just shut the tractor off when yelled my name. No time to do anything just wait for the tree to hit. 2 seconds later I’m covered in glass. Tree bounced off the cab. crushed the door. Then hit and crushed the hood. My dad was beyond mad when he saw his tractor.
I have an uncle who almsot lost his life cutting down a dead tree. It suddenly went, and as he was trying to move away from it, a large branch snapped off and landed on him. Dead trees are really tricky. I'm no expert, but he is, and one almost killed him. So, unlike all the negative comments, I'll give props where it is due. The tree didn't fall how you wanted, but you did a really good job with awareness and making sure everyone was paying attention, and no one got hurt. In the end, that's the most important thing.
in a world of people that love to criticize I applaud you for your comment. I did make sure we where all looking up at all times. at least one set of eyes at all times where trained at the top. it was brittle because it was dead standing for a long time. it should have hinged and it was moving in the right direction but due to the level of decay it Barber chaired and come back over us. we had planned escape routes cleared and scouted before I made the first cut. and they worked in our favor in the end. nobody was hurt and the power was back on in a couple of hours. no damage to the poles and a short splice to each wire was all it took.
When felling a tree, IT'S PERMANENT. All our trees are about 70 ft. tall. I watched about 100 RUclips videos (like this video) before I cut my first tree down. And I agree, that DEAD tree was a problem from the start. Wedges are mandatory. If in doubt, I use a 100 ft. steel cable and come-along, too. Glad no one was hurt. Looking forward to sawmill videos.
All these comments about this happening because it was a dead tree... Ummm, that wasn't the problem. So yea, the title of this video was spot on. He should do a follow-up to explain what he did wrong.
Careful with the dead wood. *Deep face cut has helped me do better on them. The wood doesn't flex when dead, so the hinge has a tedency to break. Most of the limbs fall off so no weight to help pull.
Thanks for posting, glad everyones ok. I have hit my line before, just barely brushed it. The helicopter the power co sends through just lays everything on it, power off though. Had a coworker nail one. It was a small poplar, slid down the lines, and fell off just before grounding the lines.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. May not have been the desired method but nobody was hurt and the tree and power lines were taken care of during daylight hours. Wishing you and your family the best.
Fun Fact.... Trees never go ware you want them to when you cut them down ! LOL Try to keep something from happening and it happens anyway, At least thats my experience. No one was hurt thats the good thing and all lived with a story to tell about how not to do something. BTDT myself. Bandit

Que the RUclips loggers 😂. Wes you’re a brave soul putting this on RUclips. Glad no one got hurt and you didn’t crush your truck. Hopefully the electric company doesn’t send you a assanine bill. I’ve never tried the jack method, probably not going to try after watching this. I normally push with my front loader or skid steer. Real sketchy stuff I put a rope as high I can through a pulley and pull with the tractor. Have a good one
I have 6 wedges in case some of the wood isn't strong plus a 100 ft cable and come-along. Pushing only works if the tree goes where you want it to, watched enough videos where the tree came down on top of the tractor. Be safe.
It was obvious you didn't have a clue. Panic on your face was amazing. Hope the sawmilling goes better than tree felling. Will definitely give you credit for having the balls to show the video of something you were lucky to survive. A fantastic example of, "How Not To Cut A Tree". The main reasons the tree probably wouldn't tip in the desired direction were, the face cut was way too shallow and you probably cut too much out of the hinge. There is no directional control without an adequate hinge and tipping the tree in the direction desired. You guys never fail to entertain. I am very glad no one was seriously injured or worse!
Great camera placement. Looked like the shot was a professional setup. And well when you're felling trees $hit happens. I had an ash tree starting to go the way I was planning. The weight shift caused the whole root ball to break and it ended up 90 degrees off course across my fence and all over the road. Luckily no traffic.
I'll be curious how much they bill you for the powerline fix. A guy I work with did something similar at his place and it was $15k. They tacked on all kinds of fees and crap. He said they had the power back on within 30 minutes of when he clipped it with the load on his truck and pulled the wire down. That's $30k/hr!
I could be missing it, but it looks like the tree isn't notched. The center hinge won't guide the tree in the desired direction unless the tree is notched.
Glad nobody was hurt. As I’m sure you guys are well aware, dead trees are extremely unpredictable. I strongly urge you three to have some helmets on hand because you never know what’s really going on in the canopy.
I was doing something similar and my buddy stopped by and asked me if I wanted it my living room or my kitchen ? So I paid him to do it correctly it fing exploded on him, but he was totally expecting it to happen. I would've died most likely. Dead trees are a dangerous.

When the camera was sitting on the truck hood I thought of the old story my father told, friend was cutting a tree and a gust of wind right when it was starting to fall, spun it and the log went crosswise of his brand new pickup.
I'd suggest considering getting a Wyeth Scott power puller. Basically a cable puller on steroids and made in the USA. Attach the cable/chain as high as you can with a ladder and notch/fall like normal. It doesn't take that long to set on place and you can use the puller for a lot of other projects too. It takes WAY less time to set up than a jack and more effective.
Usually bind the tree trunk with a load ratchet strap if the trunk looks suspect. The 'Committee for the Advancement of Arboriculture' NJ appears to hold training and safety courses related to arboriculture at 101 West Veterans Highway. If every tree is going to be like that; an old Timbco (the white colored ones, bar saw type head) or similar may be a worthwhile us$50K investment.
@@onelonleyfarmer hard to see from the camera angle .........the big man was putting a lot of effort into jacking it over .......too much for that size of tree ..........tree possibly might not have been cut up enough .....the jack then had to bust the remaining wood , hence it going where it liked .........fair play to you for showing us .....!

Face cuts. Not sure why homeowners don't do face cuts. They just try to muscle it over with machinery. Do a face cut!
Dead trees don't always respond the same as a living tree. Think that was the primary factor in undesired results.
