Ancient Brehon law would say that sinceJohn took the Black Watch oath as John Snow he gave up anything he might claim as a Stark. However, due to his ignorance of his true identity, he did not give up his Targaryen rights at the same time. In order to renounce his father's Targaryen heritage, he would have to take the oath as Aegon Targaryen. Ned Stark played a long game. He saw a way for the Black Watch to protect John while giving John a huge out if he wanted it.

He couldn't tell Cat because she'd always had a huge hatred of bastards, it was mentioned she'd always treated them badly even at River Run growing up. If she'd treated Jon differently from other bastards, someone would have noticed and wondered. Eddard didn't want any undue attention on Jon. I think that after Jon took the oath to the Black, Ed would have felt he was safe. I don't agree; I think that Robert would have still gone after Jon simply because of his absolute loathing of Rhaegar. Knowing Lyanna ran off with him willingly would have been worse in Bobby B's eyes. Who could ever refuse HIM???

But, you can see Ned's plan.. He didn't know of the totally fucked things going on there... Just a vague warning from Cat's sister. So he had to go, (which as we know was Littlefingers doing) but he planned to tell Jon and if it ever got out, he could say, look you fat fk, I am your hand just like you asked, I am here doing your shit, you will not touch that boy who has (he suspected this day may be years away) never made a move for the throne and knows his heritage... Basically, he was expecting honour and logic to win over the placated old fat man....
However, with the Lannisters he didn't know he was literally walking into the lions den. He ran things like Scotland, they were running like London.

I still believe that Howland Reed knew. He was the only other survivor of the battle at the tower of joy. Which means he is probably one of the most trustworthy people in the 7 Kingdoms. Pretty much every other character would have let it slip even if accidentally. But here Howland Reed keeps it so quiet he doesn't even talk about the fight at all to his kids. Not to mention he apparently cried when he heard about Ned's death showing the two had a truly deep connection more so than just 2 old war buddies. I would love to see Howland Reed in the Snow series. Like have him give John a more detailed explanation of what exactly happened and why Ned did what he did.

Being a maester of the nights watch therefore a sworn brother and would be honor bound to keep secrets, could Benjen have revealed Jons lineage to Aemon establishing the fact that Benjen and Aemon were related through marriage.

The statement by Bran that Robert`s rebellion was built on a lie is bluntly very simple minded. The most obvious problem is that the rebellion happened because the mad King murdered Ned`s father and brother over their protest over Raeghar`s running away with Lyanna and then ordered the Jon Arynn to turn over Ned and Robert to him for execution. That was what caused the rebellion.
I further note that Raeghar and Lyanna seem to have told just about nobody that they had gotten married and instead Lyanna a Raeghar hid in the south, in Dorne, for months while everything went to shit. And when Raeghar shows up in Kings Landing he again tells no one he has married Lyanna. Why? I'll get to that.
Westeros is a Medieval society. Marriages between Noble Houses were ecided not by love but by the forging of alliances between houses etc. Love plays a small if any role. Lyanna was promised to Robert i.e., betrothed to him, by breaking that berothel and running off together and getting married Raeghar and Lyanna were behaving irresponsibly to put it mildly. Further a berothel was considered a sort of pre-marriage and any subsequent marriage to someone else if the person was still alive would be considered illegitimate. In otherwords Raeghar's marriage to Lyanna was probably void. Further has heir to the throne could Raeghar marry without his father's permission? And what about Elia Raeghar's wife? It appears Raeghar treated her badly and at Harrenhall insulted her during the jousting ceremony by giving that wreath to Lyanna. Does Dornish law have any here? Did Raeghar divorce Elia, without her knowledge? Was he still married to her? After all some Westerosean Kings had more than one wife. Did he try to have the marriage annualled and thus basterdize his children by Elia?
If the mad King had known about the "Marriage" I suspect he would have declared it null and void, which is why Raeghar kept mum about it. The books give clear hints that Raeghar's marriage was not just about love but about Raeghar's thoughts about becoming the Azor-Ahai or the father of the Azor-Ahai. Has it is Raeghar and Lyanna had managed to do something that that would absolutely enrage 3 of the Seven Kingdoms.
    1) Both the North and Stormlands would be enraged at the breaking of the berothel by the heir to the Iron Throne and Lyanna. "Love" won't cut it.
2)Dorne would not be remotely happy about the obvious and clear insult to Elia and her children.
It seems obvious to me that Reaghar in this case was an utter idiot playing with fire. The fact he hid the marriage and was down south for months more or less hiding indicates he knew damn well how pissed people would be. So he and Lyanna sulked in the south for months while shit hit the fan and things went from bad to worst.
If the truth had got out about the "love" and "Marriage" things would likely have been worst with Dorne joining the ranks of the enraged. the alleged fact that Raeghar and Lyanna "loved" each other would make little difference and if Lyanna and Raeghar had still hidden away the damage would only have gotten worst.
We can see how things could have developed if you see the Robb / Talia match has a parallel to the Raeghar / Lyanna it turned into a disasterous mess even before the Red Wedding. I should point out that the breach of the rules in the Robb / Talia match was far less egerious than in the Raeghar / Lyanna match. For one thing Robb wasn't already married.
Raeghar was an idiot playing with fire and he knew it. Hence the secret Wedding and hiding away when things are going to shit.
Whether or not the mad King would have murdered Ned's father and brother if the full truth had been known is up in the air. What is clear is that the North and Stormlands would have still protested and demanded some punishment for Raeghar and they would almost certainly have been joined by Dorne in this. Frankly my suspecion is that the reason Raeghar kept the "marriage" a secret is A) the mad King would likely have declared it null and void and B) the mad King just might have imprisoned and disinherited Raeghar and declared Raeghar's eldest son his heir instead.
Frankly Raeghar's stupidity is awesome asnd if we want the "real" cause of Robert's rebellion the actual cause.

    • @mrme1593
      @mrme1593 10 месяцев назад

It wasn't stupid. Raeghar and Lyanna took tremendous risk to break the customs of the world. They knew that only the union of the Targarian and Stark can bring justice in the society. Jon was the perfect blend of fire and ice, he was water. It was their son that United the world beyond the wall and the seven kingdom. It would have been impossible to defeat the enemy beyond the wall and within. Targarians were powerful and Starks were Righteous, their union would bring a child that is righteous ly powerful. Jon is righteous powerful man guarding the world on the Nights watch. Also, you cannot kill him. They knew what they're doing and what would be the consequences of it. Raeghar was into magic and prophecy, he must've known about it. He knew it was a one way ride but still he took it. It was a plot and plots are not made public.
