@@owieOne I'd try overclocking the 3100 first. It makes a considerable difference, provided your motherboard is set up to do it and provided your CPU cooler is good enough. You don't need a monster cooler, but the stock cooler definitely won't cut it. A good $35 air tower should be fine.
The 5000 series chips are definitely an improvement, but your present motherboard may need a bios update to support them, or may not be able to support them at all. I went from the R3 3100 to the R9 5950X, and of course there's absolutely no comparison. But even the R5 5500 should blow the 3100 out of the water, if only because it has two more cores. The 3100 is a budget chip, but it's a really good budget chip - better than the 4100.

    • @one_step_sideways
      @one_step_sideways 2 года назад +2

@@owieOne you should overclock and undervolt it a bit without losing performance. check the CPU temps, your CPU temperature should generally be below 80C if you want it to be more safe. 85C and more will increase degradation considerably, since it's a 7nm chip, and the smaller the node is, the faster it will degrade at more than 85C.
And yes, if you are thinking of an upgrade, get only the 5600 and nothing more, nothing less (unless yours is a solid B450 board with good VRMs to power 8 core chips, which it probably is not, since you're using a budget 3100)

Absolutely. It makes me think of the old adage (paraphrasing) "...No such thing as a bad product. Just bad marketing".
For a company that wants to position itself as a market leader the 4100 makes AMD look weak. It also shows how little they think of the budget market.
If AMD went 4c/8th with Athlon people would be praising AMD for moving the market forward. They could've charged a little less, called it Athlon, and raked in some good PR.
Instead we have a company that seems to despise budget/low-end. The 6500XT wasn't charity. It was a table scrap. Hopefully Intel sorts out driver issues for their eventual cards.

@@LePedant Nobody's arguing AMD doesn't make great tech. I'll also point you back to my original comment where I brought up, "No such thing as a bad product. Just bad marketing (pricing)."
Nobody in this thread is calling for AMD to be a charity either. However, to "gift" us with products like the 6500 XT and 4100 come off more as insults. Sure, people new to tech or those with little knowledge may have no problem buying these things. But, for those of us who've watched and supported AMD well before their current boom. Many of us who remember switching from a K6 to Athlon, or getting a new ATI card. Most of all, you've got the majority of customers who know what they want and how much a product is worth. In what world does a person with this basic product knowledge *not* take AMD's marketing as an insult? We're actually seeing performance regression in certain products. Products that if were marketed a little differently would likely be better received.
Again, AMD has, and I'm sure, will continue to make great products. But, neglecting a key demographic only to placate with such a shoddy lineup this late in the generation reeks of complacency.
The last time I checked complacency wasn't something a company worth a fraction of their competitors could afford. Just look at what it did to Intel and may be doing to Nvidia atm. Even if things really go south for either company they still have the coffers to cover the damage. AMD are still a long way from having that kind of financial cushion.
I'll finish this novel by mentioning just how well the Ryzen 5 1600 AF was received. 6c/12th for $85 in 2018. AMD took their table scraps and turned them into a feast. I'd bet almost every person who scored a 1600 AF are likely still on AM4. The 1600 AF was great PR. It earned some serious customer goodwill while expanding AMD's platform. Overall, a great stroke of ingenuity that I hope to see AMD replicate again.

The 4100 is simply AMD making use of APUs that have failed GPUs as a 4c/8t CPU. That's why there's only PCIe 3 support. It's a somewhat smart move for AMD from the perspective of being able to sell a low cost product from chips that would otherwise end up as e-waste. From a consumer POV it is a disappointment even more so when you compare it to the i3 12100F. AMD is still more mfg. capacity limited than Intel, so long as that exists AMD is going to focus on selling higher end or higher margin silicon whenever they can so long as the Zen architecture remains competitive.

That has been a tried and tested process with AMD for decades. Their single-core Sempron 145 CPUs were actually dual-core Athlon X II CPUs with a defective core, rebadged in order to avoid wasting an otherwise usable component. Some motherboards had the ability to unlock the defective core, thus granting a free upgrade in lieu of potential processor lifetime; I have had several MoBos and Sempron 145s and always try doing this, when building rigs out of them: sometimes it works, sometimes it's quite unstable, so I have had to revert it to single-core operation.

See how the 3100 and 3300X were impossible to find once they sold out? That's because all defective DIEs were sold, so only a few to be collected afterwards.
Given the current constraints AMD is facing with TSMC 7 nm, they just can't release a massively succesful low end CPU without dragging the whole lineup into shortages . It was the only thing I had to buy. And then, there was no way I was going to buy an expensive motherboard I have to live with for the next 3-5 years to justify the purchase with DDR4 so I would have had to go with DDR5 even though it doesn't yet exceed the performance of DDR4. In the near future it will. So I would be buying DDR5 now and again in a couple of years when I can get better bandwidth from it, as well as upgrading to a 12th gen i7 or i9. It all adds up when I can just drop in a CPU upgrade and wait a couple of years to see how this very unstable market works out. Add on that their are LGA 1700 motherboards with under 80-90 that support ddr4 and the total difference is probably not more than $30 between the two. I get that prices will vary depending on location, but those who live where I do, which is the US. Not to mention the better upgrade path in the foreseeable future with Raptor lake likely being compatible with the mobo while AM4 is currently seeing their last releases.

The point you make near the end about upgrading from an older Ryzen is sooo good. It's better to spend the same amount of money for a used 2600 or anything used to upgrade your AM4 system than the 4100. In fact,I have a friend who owns a R3 1200 system and he considers upgrading within the next few months. My advice would either be a 3600 or 2700 for around 100€ or if he he wants to spend less, a 1600af/2600 of 3100 for around 60-80€ .
IF the 4100 goes down to around 50-60€ perhaps I would recommend it. It doesn't worth more than that. To be honest if it was name 4300G or 4100G and it had integrated graphics a cost of around 80-90€ could be considered somewhat reasonable.

I commonly build 4790 and 3770 refurb systems with 3060ti+ gpus to keep customer cost as little as possible and there's really no difference to a 12400 or 5600x as long as the game stays gpu bound. The exceptions are very obvious ones, like map games, and the type of people invested in those usually want 5800x+ tier cpu power for other things anyways.

You tested the Ryzen 3 4100 and of course it's not a super processor.
But here in Denmark, where we have the world's highest taxation and 25% VAT for the state on all goods, it now costs only 509 kroner, which is equal to 73 dollars og equal to 60 pund.
And in terms of price performance, I think it is a really good processor, although it is a 4/8 where the ryzen 1200 was a 4/4, so it is far more powerful than a Ryzen 1200.

It's sad how quickly AMD is trying to essentially destroy the sense of goodwill they had built up over the last 5 years since Ryzen launched. The 4000 series budget CPUs and lower end RX 6000 GPUs are another league of disappointing. At least I see a lot of 6600s for dirt cheap on eBay now compared to the MSRP, that has me tempted, but nothing else that they've put out in the last year or so has been particularly exciting aside from maybe the 5800X3D.

    • @yasu_red
      @yasu_red 2 года назад +1

The GPU side of things is the most strange to me. For the 6500 XT (and probably the 6400 too) they slapped a laptop GPU onto a desktop board, which came with the side effect of having a paltry amount of PCIE bandwidth and a pathetic 64bit memory bus. Performing the same or worse than much older GPUs (6400 vs 1050ti and 6500 XT vs RX 580/5500 XT) for the same or higher prices is impossible to find excuses for. This is only if your system has sufficient PCIE version support too, otherwise you lose performance and essentially waste some of the GPU's actual potential. Continuing on with that, I'm fairly sure those low end APU based 4000/5000 CPUs also only support PCIE 3.0, essentially cutting away performance from AMD's own 6400 and 6500 XT. It's all just baffling to me.

Buy a decent case and PSU and a cheap SSD and you're ready to go. You can eventually upgrade to a R7 or R9 later on. You could also get a decent RX 6600 or GT, or 6650 or a RTX 3060 TI to pair nicely with this. You spent the budget on a GPU so you just need to be able to play with it. I spent 3 months saving up to build the rest of the PC watching my new GPU sitting in a box being a literal paper weight.

I can't imagine AMD is going to sell very many of these. It would be fine for an office PC, except it doesn't have an IGP. And IGP's are critical for making office PCs as cheap as possible. I know that AMD is planning on putting an IGP in most of their CPUs like Intel does, so once they do that, that is where they should use all their lowest binned chiplets. I didn't know about the change in cache amounts so that was surprising to hear. But for office PCs that doesn't really matter. IMHO dual core CPUs need to be killed off NOW; even an office PC does enough to utilize a quad core these days; it just doesn't have to be a monster of a quad core to do it. ;-)

Maybe just general uses like browsing, light video editing (if paired with some kind of decent/cheap gpu) and it's a readily available, in socket-upgrade for someone using a R3 1200 or R5 1400--though I'd personally go for a used R5 2600 or 1600AF seeing as there's way more multi-core performance and similar single core for around the same price. Those types of scenarios *do* exist, and it makes sense for AMD to repurpose parts that would've otherwise gone to the landfill. Though from an enthusiast perspective, it definitely feels like regression in terms of performance per dollar compared to previous gen & the competition. AM5/Zen4 will hopefully offer more compelling R3 SKUs...maybe.

I’m annoyingly stuck with a 775 system due to the current way things are… these CPU and board prices need to drop.

    do you think its a good upgrade from a ryzen 3 2200g? paired with a rx570 4gb

I would say save more money and get the 5600.

@Katinggangseng only if you want to keep the majoriy of the hardware, if your going big and new you might as well throw down, but i agree with your statement
unless your going for 144+ fps consistantly you should just max your platform rather than dump a shitton of money at for minimal improvements in Competitive esport titles

PCIE 3 is fine for a chip like this, you're not gonna lose any performance from the cards that are going to reasonably be paired with this as the CPU will be the bottleneck, not the PCIE. It's a nice little budget CPU for those that only have £85 to spend.

not for people who buy 6500xt on a budget

@Antares 8001 would like to see actual real world limitations people speak of, because if your buying a 4100/6500xt new, im pretty sure your aiming for more than 60 fps and these products are quickly removed from your look into hardware.

I recently got one on sale for just $60 in my country, and quite honestly, the difference in price between this CPU and the Intel 12100F is significant enough that I can literally buy a Corsair 550W PSU or get a 16GB DDR4 RAM set. Add the fact that most mobos with decent heatsinks for gaming that will work for the Intel 12100F is also significantly more expensive than a decent B450M mobo for this CPU. So for me, going for this CPU instead of the more "better" Intel 12100F seemed a much sensible choice considering I'm on a tight budget.

last year 4100 was better priced than 4500 but kinda odd in southeast asia right now 4500 dropped prices lately I got R5 4500 and Msi B450 combo brand new just for $100 during a flash sale while R3 4100 is still remains it original price

I guess the only plus point of this is on a very tight budget as it can be paired with a cheap A320/B450 with appropriate bios for £30-£40 and still give an upgrade path to more powerful CPU's. 12100 is a great budget CPU for £100, but even an H610 board is £75. I'd personally pay the £50-60 price difference for the Intel platform, especially when you consider overall system cost which is probably only 10% price difference for 30% more performance potential with more powerful GPUs

Even the most demanding games reached more than 60 fps average, so I don't understand people's complaining. Not so long long ago for this price you could get CPUs adequate for GTA SA... Today's low budget, but not fully entry level chips are actually more than decent.

Well I'd most definitely watch a video where this CPU is paired with a 1660 or a 3050 GPU.

  • @jayb2705

It would be interesting to compare it to a 1600/1600AF or 2600, as those chips should be even cheaper than it on the 2nd hand market and should perform a lot better. They just seem to be selling off excess stock from their APU's, with the graphics disabled. Those used to be cheap bargain parts like the Athlon X4 740, and now they try and fob them off as "normal" low end chips.
