To make the knots stronger, try making them triple instead of double knots (bobbin lacemakers have been using triple knots for security before cutting thread ends off close to the knot for donkey's years; I haven't tried this with really thick yarn/thread/cords but it works well for finer threads, even slippery ones like silk)

Good idea. So far it's been okay. I've used it a few times to carry yarn up & down the stairs.
For the needle gauges can you use them for crochet hooks?
Good question. I think so but I've never really used needle gauges to check hook sizes so I'm not 100% sure.
