I love this game, played it on release day. This game has two gameplay twists that are some of the most mind-blowing for me: the fact that there are also puzzles in the environment and the puzzle in the movie Nostalgia in the underground cinema. Also, I think the message of the game is that we try to see deep meaning, but in reality there is only an illusion of deep meaning and the world in the game doesn't really make sense.
I think one of the reasons the game was so divisive at launch is the way it was marketed. Everywhere I saw people talking about the game before launch said it was a love letter to Myst-like games. When I started playing it at launch, at first I was really disappointed, as The Witness has the puzzle elements, and the "the game is bigger than it appears" elements, but it doesn't really have a story, which is an important part of Myst-like games. The game is more about meditation and philosophy than a real story. I was even really mad at some point to have been so mislead by the marketing. But the puzzle were enjoyable, so I kept on playing, and I'm glad I did. In the end, I definitely wouldn't call the game a Myst-like game, since it's missing half of what made Myst so great, but it's still a ridiculously good puzzle game, and one of my favorite games of all time.
Nice essay. You can do without the part system, just tell it as a story or use a music change to signify a change in topic. I still feel like nothing in life compares to the witness, the struggle, frustration, serenity and satisfaction! If I could wipe it from my memory I would!
I almost didn't finish this one. It's clever, and i'm glad it exists, but I wouldn't recommend it to many people. I'm tone deaf, and after forever in the forest of bird sounds, I still couldn't hear the differences in the calls that were supposed to direct you. What I remember the most about the game is its lack of accessibility and getting frustrated on the few puzzles that don't give you enough direction to understand the core mechanic of the area.
Couldn’t agree more. Less of a game and more of an interactive art piece. Not perfect by any means, but it was pretty close to perfect for me. Bird area definitely had me going insane for a while too 😂
Nice to hear a positive perspective of the game. Would have appreciated an easy way to skip through spoilers though.
