First, YES, Smith was out of line. He should have taken a page from Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook's book when Peyton Manning joked about their relationship at the ESPY's. I was writing for a large online website that focused on the OKC Thunder at the time so I'm privy to some details most don't know. I don't deny that the joke made that night was funny, but when you see both Durant's and Russell's reactions, you can plainly see it cut deep, deeper than most people know, but neither stepped to the stage and slapped Manning. So no, I'm not condoning what Will Smith did that night, but I'm not going to throw him completely under the bus because I don't know the whole story. Why? Because Smith isn't talking. Everyone else is. Everyone jumping to conclusions without all the facts just to get hits on their social media sites and that's sad. I'm waiting to hear his side and I hope when he opens up it's the truth and not something his publicist spun together. Maybe it's out there and I just haven't found it. Without the truth, we cannot move forward and one truth is that we all have our personal demons that we struggle with. Personally, I'm thankful I'm not a celebrity. When my demons act out and I do something stupid the whole world doesn't know it because it doesn't care. Just from where I'm sitting as I write this response on just 2 links I see over a million views. I've seen quite a few videos on this subject and to date, I have not seen anyone sincerely ask Will Smith what is wrong and offer genuine help. Maybe that is what we should be talking about. Please don't see this as a personal attack because you are right, it's not 1923. We know what Will Smith did was wrong so the fact it was accepted in 1923 was also wrong. In my life I have had people come to conclusions about me without knowing all the facts, I think I can safely say that we all have. One particular incident cost me the dearest friend I have ever had. I did something stupid and couldn't explain to my friend why because at that time I didn't really know why I did it. I tried, but I didn't know the root cause. It has taken 40 years to figure it out and maybe Chris and Will should go their separate ways but that should be between them IMO. I just hope Will Smith is really trying to process what he did. We aren't talking about some small-time celebrity here. Will Smith has been in the public's eye for decades. He knows what he should and should not do under those circumstances. Maybe he just needs time to reflect. I hope it doesn't take him 40 years to figure it out and I hope there is someone there helping him process all this because I have to ask myself how we will be judged about our reaction to that slap a hundred years from now.
