In my generation people usually started out listening to Dre, then progress to Pete Rock and Premier, finally ending up will Dilla. Dilla was for the true hiphop heads

I think a gang of us were fans of Dilla (back when he was still Jay Dee) before we knew that we were fans of his. Too many heads who are Dilla fans (including me) have those stories of loving his beats before we even knew who he was. Then, when we learned about him, it was "Yooooo! I didn't know he did that beat! I used to rock that joint all the time!"

@@tchakeemn yeah, bro. He went from Jay Dee to J Dilla (once he was becoming more well known) in order to avoid being confused with Jermaine Dupree (who was going by J.D.). Look up his "Welcome 2 Detroit" album and you will see both names.
So, now you know that Dilla was the one who produced songs like "Running" for The Pharcyde (amongst other songs he's done for them) and a bevy of songs for other artists back then.

His music came from the space, he was an alien. Nobody else had that magic on beats, if you analyze his music you realize how fucking genious he was, from the punching detroit kicks to the tight nasty and face slapping snares, the crazy patterns, the groove, the way he chopped and played with the samples, his beats have soul man, not even Premier or Dre have that magic sumtin, even being Goats too...What a huge loss hiphop took when he passed away, I still remember how sad my father was that day, thats how deep Dilla music impacted on people. I grew up in a culture that demonized hip hop, for whichever reason. I was introduced to Jdilla via nujabes via samurai Champloo. Then came a journey diving into his work from purely a musician’s point and the respect and intrigue and impact of that continuous discovery led me to Asheville, NC to the Moog museum. Amazing
