  • Young archers can shoot in U14,U16, U18 and U21 but many are cable of winning in an older age catagory. I discuss the views on shooting in a older age group or shooting in your age group.
The benefits of shooting in older age groups and the benefit of winning in your age group.

The British barebow archer Oliver Hick held three adult world records by the time he was 16. He has joined the senior groups because he was shooting at that level. An outstanding archer.
The Australian record system seems a bit different. In the US, there are tournament you can compete for national records that might be run locally but sanctioned by USA Archery. Regardless of the age group you are shooting in, you can apply for records in your actual age group or any age group older than yours. In masters (50+), you can apply down to senior. So, if you are 16, you can shoot in the U18 class and claim any record from 16 and up. That takes the pressure off the choice of age group you would like to shoot in. This is also good because it sets national records universally. For example, if you are 16 and you shoot the highest score recorded, you can claim that at all age groups above yours and older archers would have to top that to make a new record. Note, the archer needs to apply for the record and it needs to be a USA Archery sanctioned event with USA Archery certified judges.

I am quite ok with younger archers in the higher age group than their eligible age limit. However the catch here is they should not be measured against those from older age groups, nor expected to perform like them. Especially when the format is different like 30m vs 50m, or 60m vs 70m. Puberty and/or experience plays huge role in their physical and mental state.
The same also should be applied when archers eligible for 50+ (formerly Masters) division choose to shoot Open age division. They might have all the experience but their physical (as well as vision and eyesight) is not as solid as younger archers. Competition archery, like any other competitive sport, is more intense and physical than their recreational counterparts.

One thing i strongly believe is one of the best ways to get better is to shoot with archers better than you. So I now regularly shoot against state / national champions & get my arse whooped; but I’m finding myself smashing my PB’s & generally feeling i could do so much better. :)
& at my club we’ve recently had a new crop of kids come up & start to compete against us in our senior rounds. They still haven’t beaten us yet; but i know our time is fast running out; becuase the kids are great; & they all train really hard.

I've seen that (albeit in Belgium) young shooter might be bumped up in distance but not age group. So instead of 12meter they move up to 18m. The theory is that is will be harder to shoot big numbers but in the long run improves the accuracy of the shooter.
