My daughter has just bought this speaker with a Rega IO amp over a Naim Mu-so2 (today). We went to a trad bricks and mortar HiFi shop in Carlton Victoria and was looked after very well. We listened to a Rotel A11 tribute with these speakers and then the IO. The Naim was a great complete package, but the separates won out with the sound quality and size of the IO as well as the flexibilty for future upgrades. We included an Encel Bluetooth DAC, to get the same connectivity as the Naim and the Rotel. This system fits in her bedroom on a vintage sideboard between the plants and bits and bobs. She can stream spotify and tidal from her phone via aptX bluetooth and looks forward to connecting a CD player and maybe a turntable in the future. This replaces an old JBL bluetooth speaker and she is very happy with the sound.
I thought it was worth adding this to a year old video because products have a long life and that immediate hit of the new is not where good HiFi is. It's not fast fashion, more like slow food. Good speakers are good speakers for decades. Maybe not so with DACs, although perhaps now there's a peak in performance, if not price.
I guess I'm also writing this, apart from the good fortune to be able to buy something we want rather than something we need, is that we didn't just buy a pair of speakers (or were sold a pair of speakers). We got a system that worked in the space we had, with the small room constraints that John @Darko Audio pointed out that sounds great. Maybe that's the hard part. But being able to get trustable advice from a reputable dealer and to hear for ourselves is something we need to value too.
Your command of the English language when describing the item you are reviewing is always welcome, entertaining and informative. Keep up the good work.
I like that you refer to actual tracks of music in this review, keep it up John
Love that you reference specific pieces of music and talk about why you are listening to them for a given review. Also love that you give us information about the artist and track. Overall, great channel.
I think I love, love, love everything Solid Steel makes. I bought a very nice equipment stand from them earlier this year. Great quality! Thanks John.
Thanks for the great review and music suggestions. Greatly appreciated.
Great review! Clarity and transparency have always been, and still are, key characteristics of Monitor Audio loudspeakers. I use the Gold 200 4g with a Hegel h120 and I love it!
Finally the MA Silver 7g reviews begin! Cant wait for the 100’s. I have a 4x4 mtr room. I think (hope) the 100’s will be best for that room.
Great video again!!
you are simply awesome. i love how you give your personal opinion without forcing it to your viewers
I have the silver 100 6G, and they are a joy to listen to.. clarity and a great thump in the low end. Definitely interested in hearing the 7G
Brilliant as allways !
Really enjoy your style of video content. Please keep this up for as long as the music plays in you :-)
Agreed!!!!
THANKS JOHN. WELL MADE VIDEO AGAIN AND A BEAUTIFUL SPEAKER.
Anyone else imagine that John's guest room is just a wall of speakers, a wall of amps and dacs and the last all headphones and IEMs?
I've had a pair of Monitor Audio silver S6's I have used and loved for years.
You should do a quick review of the speaker stands.
Haven't missed a video yet😊 Keep them coming😊
Thanks for reviewing Monitor Audio speakers, something I rarely see and would enjoy encountering more often. Though our musical tastes are wildly divergent, I appreciate that you relate speaker performances to music and your particular sound preferences. That makes it pretty accessible for me to "interpret" your assessments into my own music and sound preferences.
Love that Four Tet track! Thanks for turning us on to new music!
From Neil Young to Forest Drive West, music selection always on top!
i love the musical segues on this channel. they sound better than everything else on youtube. thanks john.
Those are my favorite stands. So classy!
What a great review.
Hearing so many good things about Monitor Audio silver range
Hey thanks John. Great review.
I have the 100 ones, you are in for a nice session of music, throw them anything you like. Endless hours of enjoyment. Nice video by the way.
Vespertine is a a masterpiece. Simply beautiful.
All I want to add is an album tip if you want to test speakers' ability to deliver satisfying, gnarly, lower lip biting bass: Scuba - A Mutual Antipathy. Considering Four Tet's My Angel Rocks Back And Forth was mentioned and is in the same sort of genre.
not many people review speakers with playing jungle. i appreciate that a lot. it's a heart warmer.
Monitor audio studio 20s, still one the classic old school greats, clarity and transparent. Do a review of the flagship platinums, thanks.
great review john i have monitor audio silver 100 and love them paired up with a yamaha rv 6a receiver, im no pro but the bass from the silver 100's. i have my speakers set on a tv unit with isolation foam and they work great for me as i don't have space to place anywhere else keep up the great work on this channel.
Love that Artcore album! The 2nd one didn’t really live up to the first comp if I remember correctly. Great review; thank you! 🙌
I happen to have heard the 6th generation Silver 100 very recently while picking out speakers with a friend, and for those you are spot on in terms of the dynamics. Honestly the most impressive part of that speaker, songs covered a much larger range than I was used to. My friend did not end up choosing the Silver 100 though, as they wanted a bit more of a laid back "listen all day" type speaker, as they put it. But it sounds like you might enjoy them a lot.
What speaker did they go with for that sound? That’s what I’m after.
John, the typical woofer dust cap is also a kid finger/poking magnet, which these Monitor speakers also avoid. :)
Another great video John! Love your channel. Great speaker stands too.
FYI attention to anyone looking to buy a pair and has a cat, beware! Sadly I had to sell mine because they’re easy to topple forwards due to their build. Filling with Attabites made a huge difference but they could still topple if a cat jumps on them and pushes them over when they jump off. Sad really… they’re stunning, beautifully made and a fantastic addition to any hifi setup (unless you have a cat). 😎
I subscribed because I like your take on rambling
I appreciate that you've run these speakers on more mixed sources, the Pi with the dongle dac, the Xiaomi box over toslink etc... Instead of only dedicated devices.. 👍
Great reviews 👍
@6:04 Connecting speakers via top posts vs bottom posts can make a sonic difference. I don't know why. Speaker manufacturers generally recommend plugging into the bottom posts.
The factory links are usually detrimental.
Excellent music recommendations!
Your music recs are always on time. Rediscovering that N. Young & Crazy Horse album. 👊❤️
I'd wager to bet that the 8" woofer on the 100 would give you that thump your looking for over the 5.25" one on the 50. I might have to listen to these if I can.
I have the 6g MA s300 paired with moon 240 i, detailed and great staging at lower volumes for critical listening and big and bouncy and lots of fun at higher volumes , obviously placement and room major factors as always but you get a great speaker for the £
Got the Silver 6 5G. Love them so much...
Cant wait to hear what you think about the Silver 100. I just bought the 6G version. :)
I really enjoy your stuff. Must admit I always wish there was a playlist link in the show notes (being super lazy). You always feature such a excellent set of diverse tracks.
Playlists for each video are published on my Patreon.
I bought a pair of Monitor Audio Silver 6 (5G) five years ago and they're brilliant for family life with little kids. Relatively small floorstanders, I'm looking forward to hearing the new Silver 300 7G's. But I also hope you review the Silver 100 7G's, after watching your POWERNODE and KC62 review, I'm really liking the idea of going back to stand mount speakers with a small sub.
I have the same set of speakers, what amplifier do you use?
John is right about these speakers. I just listened to them in the store and they lack low end, spent a bit more and went for the 100s.
love the Solidsteel speaker stands. If I had the right kind of speakers, I'd buy them. looked at them often!
Hi! Thaks for such a detailed review. Would you recommend these for desktop / nearfield use?
I've always had a soft spot for Monitor Audio, design wise. These look gorgeous, but sadly wouldn't be for me for the same reasons as yourself John. I'd be hooking them up to a Denon receiver, it's a very warm sound so I need energetic speakers.
They look great but the paint gets scratched really easily
Like Ferrero Rocher...two new posts in quick succession...you spoil us Mr Ambassador 👍
Thanks for the great video - How do they compare QA's i saw them next to in the video ? I'm actually looking at the cheaper MA Bronze 50's or 200 vs the QA 3030i's and struggling to get a side by side demo arranged at a local shop
I'm using Silver 50 6g connected to the Cambridge Audio ONE. I like the clarity and transparency. (very happy to hear it from you.)
Perhaps because I've been aging it more than a year, the dynamics seem to have improved quite a bit, and the sharpness of the metal tweeter has also decreased a little.
It is appropriate to use only about 42% amplifier volume in my 3 x 5 m room.
Do you find the small 50 6th Ed. true to bass specs? I am thinking its a very open speaker. I heard the Silver 100s and was surprised how well it controlled sibilance yet it was a bit extended in the highs and forward sounding. Perhaps the 50s are less forward ?
That is a really nice-looking speaker
Great review as always.
Your positive passion for most of the products that you review easily shines through. I didn’t see that from you with these speakers. Maybe the EISA winning speakers from SA would be more you?
Thanks for the Neil Young tip. A new (old) recording of Neil and Crazy Horse now playing on my Spotify!
🤗 VERY GOOD JOB AND DESCRIPTION AND WHAT WE CAN COMPARE WITH OUR TASTES 👍
AND 😎👀 COOL LOOKS ….for the WAF 😉 SO THANKS JOHN FOR SHARING THIS WITH US 😍😍😍
For the intro, a badass mech keyboard sound for typing hahah
At last another lover of Sleeps With Angels 😃
3:00 That rear port design is definitely an example of biomimicry. I wonder how efficient it actually is in expelling air 💨
As always excellent music in your videos, crisp, clear and superb. Can you put a note about what groups you play in the cutscenes?
I know this is all about the high end, but for small rooms, what do you think about Audio Pro C10 MkII and some if theirs sub? Any thoughts? I heard they're pretty good for the money. I know it is on Sonos level, but could they be any good for small flats? I can not imagine to open full potencial with KEF LS50 in these small rooms for example. Love the channel, keep it up👍🏻
Sleeps with Angels has always competed (for me) with Zuma as the best Neil Young and Crazy Horse album. It's also beautifully recorded.
Nice, informative video John! I have a question though: I'm considering buying the same, white Solidsteel SS-6 stands. I see you're not using the supplies spikes that come with the stands. Have you tried them with the stands and what are you using instead, in this video ? (do these black 'thingies' come with the stands ?) Thanks in advance!
Hi John! What would be your go to loud speaker(that are the same size as these) for someone who listens to a lot of techno, House, and other electronic music genres?
Nice one as always. I’d be very interested to hear your thoughts on Monitor Audio’s most budget friendly floorstanders, the Bronze 200
Yummy binding posts! Mmmmmm! The Forest Drive West tracks did indeed sound amazing through my QA 3030i speakers and Cambridge Minx sub. Very meaty!
I have the 6g monitor audio silver 100 and you’re correct, the bass on those with their 8 inch mid/bass driver are solid and deep for a stand mount speaker. You have to run them in for at least 70 hours before they really show their best though.
Yes agree, would love for you to get your hands on silver 100 please
I indeed have a small room (8 sqm) so I tried the 6th gen of the Silver50’s. Don’t be fooled, the bass is very low, especially when watching movies. On bass heavy songs (electronic etc) it’s absolutely adequate, but male actors voices lack at least +3-4 dB around 150-300Hz to not sound like a boy in his puberty.
I hope the gen7 improved on this.
The best part of his video is the person answering the phone
It's great you have put the Artcore album on there. There is music very much like that chameleon remix from the mid 90s on Good Looking Records. The First and second LTJ Bukem "Logical Progression" albums for a start. Also there is a track by Blu Mar Ten on the Good Looking Records' Producer series called Adrift On Deep Water. Seba is a great artist. He has an album in the same "Producer" series. Check out the track Universal Music. Lastly, check out the very first LTJ Bukem "Earth" series. There is a track called Do What You Got To Do by Pablo. I assure you, the tracks I've named in this post will make those monitor speaker's sing so sweetly. Thank you as always for the up. Stay safe.
Love the Forest Drive West recommendation. I picked up the new Creeper EP recently. Great release.
Great stands
Have a pair with the raw finish
Did you fill them or are you running them empty?
You know what sounds really freaking good is Kenny Gs Christmas album. Man it sounds good on my sound system
I have the monitor audio apex 5.1 speaker system and i adore them. I do need to look for a better amp. Any recommendations on what would pair well?
Interested how these speakers pair with your NADc316bee amp.
Tweeter grills are always a good idea 💡 👍
I have the Silver 300 for my main speakers I went into the shop to look at the Silver 100's and I upgraded. My listening space is 12 by 17 would you consider these for rear channel speakers? Also do you have any videos on how to improve the room audio quality even with carpet and furniture it is a echo chamber?
Do your solid steel stands offer a night and day difference against your older atacama stands i.e more dynamic presentation and provides higher frequency extension due to the 3 point design etc.
Hello,
You mentioned that you used the Xiaomi Mi box s as a streamer and I have a question about it.I have the box too and I have connected it to my Marantz reciever via hdmi and optical and the sound I get from Tidal on the Android TV OS is bad.How you managed to make it work and get good sound?
Also I think the speakers would be awesome for home theatre where a sub or subs are available or maybe for a 2.1 system.
Thanks and take care!
What does transparent from the waist up mean? Love your attitude to audio!
You spoke of needing to keep your speakers against the wall to your right for projector but limited on floor space. Have you heard Ohm speakers? Designed to be close to the wall. I’ve been considering a pair for the same reason. Made in Brooklyn USA 😬
Hi John. Nice approaching of these speakers. I am torn between these and the Kef Q150. My space is about 9m². I am looking for good imaging and soundstage, clear and neutral mids, taut and punch bass, but no bumps in upperbass (150-250hz), and bit sparkle in treble, yet non fatiguing. Which one would you pick up and why? Other options I have been looking into are Dali Spektor2, Focal 706 and Wharfedale 11.2. But I don´t want mess with your head. lol.
Hi really enjoyed your review on the 50 7Gs you mentioned the album sleeps with angels which is a great album how do they handle that lovely subtle low bass on My heart. Thanks again Tony.
Totally right about Bjork. Was obsessed with her but she drifted off into more indulgent, inaccessible waters.
I don't normally go for a white finish on speakers, but these are quite attractive and beautifully constructed. The SolidSteel stands are a perfect match. I was curious as to what the small round black thing was on the rear cabinet above the port?
Fixing for the drivers. Single Alan head for each one.
Hey John, do you know the Void Indigo? There’s a way to mount them as a home system and they look absolutely stunning. But I can’t find a lot of information of them
I can’t find the link for the silver steel speaker stand … can you please share the link.
Kids can easily push through that grill after being attracted by those copper coloured tweeters. I have my own experience with my MA Silver floorstanders. To the topic, these bookshelfs should be really great within their price-range.
Great video! What happened to the Tune Tots??
... You won me over with Drum & Bass.
Love u rstyle! Small room / no space for stands - speakers will be almost up against the back wall / Monitor Audio Silver 50 7G or Q Acoustics 3030i? (jazz / 70's rock / classical movies)
What is used under the Solidsteel stand legs? I can see it’s not spikes.
Nice Review. I would love to hear your thoughts on the silver 100 7g.
As you mentioned I have the Silver 2 5G. Awesome speaker in its own right. 7G should me more refined.
Nice looking……. Speakers 😂👍
Does anyone know what drawers those are next to the stereo?
does anyone know what are the changes and improvements from the last generation? There are pretty good deals on the Silver 50 6G, so I don't know if going with the newer model is really worth it.
The speaker stands look great! But the problem I have is that solid steel is everything BUT solid. This way unwanted resonances get free play (some frequencies "ringing sounds"). Filling them with sand should get you big benefits in bass, mid and treble.
By far the nicest looking stands available! But that is subjective😃
You’re right John, the Sleeps With Angels album is absolutely brilliant!
Or high pass it around 100 Hz and add a subwoofer.
