    I worked in a clinical chemistry lab for 37 years. Protein deficiency is extremely rare and always seemed to be associated with other pathologies.

      my neighbor has not seen a single case of protein deficiency in his 78 years. he was blind from birth. FAO, however, estimates that over one billion people suffer from inadequate protein intake. that doesn't seem so rare, does it?

      @@v.a.n.e. did you even listen to this video? Or attempt to think about why those people have protein deficiency? What do you think is going to happen if you only taken 500 cal? You’re gonna have a protein deficiency along with every other nutrient deficiency. It stands to reason that you have intake a humans baseline amount of calories in order to not be deficient in protein …or deficient in anything. What Dr. McDougall is saying is that protein deficiency does not exist, as long as people are consuming enough calories. He really shouldn’t even have to have mentioned that caveat, because it is common sense.

    Back in the 1970's my grandmothers doctor thought she was too thin and told my aunt to buy powdered protein for her. She didn't like it, she was used to eating fresh produce and whole grains but she was 90 yrs, lived alone and was dependent on others to bring her groceries. After about 4 months drinking the protein she had a stroke and died. I have no idea what kind of protein they put her on, if it was whey or beef based back then but later my aunt told me she thought the protein played a part in it

    On a high calorie vegan diet (>=3000 calories), I find it difficult to get my protein even down to 1.2 g/kg. It's usually around 1.6 g/kg, about 13 to 14% of my calories. I like my bean and grains. It's very difficult to eat 3,000 calories without them. If I eat less than 3,000 calories, I start losing weight. Those beans and grains also come with a lot of fiber, so I'm getting around 125 grams/day of fiber.

    A prospective cohort study by Beasley et al. (2010) investigated the relationship between protein intake and incident frailty in 24,417 women aged 65 years or older over a three-year period.     I like the starch solution but noticed my muscles definitely look larger and fuller when I add in some protein powder and I feel better overall. Hair gets thicker too. Other benefits too but tmi lol

      @@mikafoxx2717 muscle is extremely healthy when built on a natural human body, it’s health benefits are off the scale, bodybuilders did early because they spent 20+ years destroying their internal organs and pushing their body to the limit, not anything to do with diets, bodybuilders do all different types of diet, and they all die at the same rate.

      The study was done in 1972 and found that Okinawa healthy elderly and centenarians without access to supplements were getting about 17% protein from their diet and 50% of proteins and fats came from animal foods.

      Okinawa is a great source for this. Healthy old age too. Also look up the China Study by Dr Colin Campbell. Dr McDougall in other videos talks about how the biggest time of growth in a human life is that of an infant. And breast milk is I believe only 4-5% protein. Natural weaning occurs around 3-4 years. After that carbs are what we need for energy including brain function which runs on carbs.

      @@elainesommers9109 In a study done in 1972 and published in 1992 it was found that Okinawa healthy elderly and centenarians without access to vitamins or supplements were getting about 17% protein from their diet and 50% of proteins and fats came from animal foods on about 1750 calorie a day diet for healthy elderly men age 70-90 and after age 100 about 1100 calorie a day diet as Okinawa centenarian man is about 4'10" and 105 pounds.

    This is a remarkable video, even in the context of all of the excellent work done by Dr. McDougall. Still, it might have been worthwhile to bring up Kwashiorkor, which many think of as a deficiency of protein.

    Is 3% protein enough zinc, B12 to maintain testosterone and muscle?

      Testosterone production mainly follows adequate calorie intake, vitamin D and zinc intake. B12 is very important for tons of functions. Sleep is also more important than high protein intake. I think the studies that show protein intake being related with testosterone just also keep people out of a calorie deficit

      of course not. testosterone is a hormone, which is also made of protein. apart from water and fat, there are practically no cells without protein. 3% based on a 2000 kcal diet is 60 kcal, or 15g of protein, which is ridiculously low.
      the absolute minimum is 0.8g/kg or 0.36g/lb, which is about 60g, not 60 kcal, of protein per day for an average 75 kg person. there are more recent studies that consider even these amounts to be too low.

      @@landerhendrickx3522 I know that many plants contain zinc, but they also contain phytates, which can block zinc absorption. When I saw this I thought zinc supplements would be a solution, however, I just discovered another video on this channel called "The Dangers of Supplements" which does not recommend zinc supplements.

    We can say big thank you to fitness industry. Although many individuals take some kind of supplements for growth, yet somehow they fixate on protein and kids are eating that up since they want to look big.

    We need more protein than the mcdougal diet for optimal health. Substituting carbs for plant proteins has a net neutral or beneficial effect up to a point.
    A vegan diet should contain at least 10-15% calories from protein on most days and athletes require more.
    Just because your not protein deficient doesn’t mean your eating the optimal amount. Protein is needed for many things such as neurotransmitters and under eating especially on a vegan diet is unwise

      I absolutely love Dr M. but I have to agree with you here. I've been working out for more than 30 years, 5-6 days a week and I've never stopped, longest break is about a week if on vacation but even then, I do some sort of body weight moves and tons of walking. I've tried MANY times over the year to play with my diet, yet I've always been vegan (during those 30 years) and I find when I up my carbs in order to drop my protein intake my muscles, performance, energy and sleep suffers from it. I lift heavy and do solid workouts that require calorie and protein to be optimal. I am staying lean into my 50s so I have no plans on changing how I eat. WFPB, with focus on plant proteins, this just seems to work best for me.

      @@workhardplayharderx2 yeah I can relate. For me too many carbs especially higher glycemic almost feels like being on stimulants. Feel less grounded and more fidgety, also muscles feel weaker and heavier. Around how much protein do you eat?

      @@knockingseeker almost afraid to post that here since so many will attack me. I've played around with my intake and to keep my strength and muscle mass I need to consume a minimum of about 80, some days I go much higher (leg day) and others I get a little less.

      I built a lot of muscle that I still have in earlier years on 250+ of animal protein so I know I need more than most

    I don’t know how heavy Dr. McDougall is into politics, but does he realize that the meat and dairy industry is heavily subsidized by the government? So there’s a big push for it as well.

      It’s nuts that the USA subsidises production of certain food goods. Any economist will say it’s dumb. New Zealand used to subsidise sheep and stopped it in the 1980s.

      subsidies serve primarily to protect the interests of the state, to encourage growth and quality of production, as well as to preserve certain branches of industry, ultimately enabling customers greater purchasing power. for these reasons, it is important to encourage food producers, especially of high quality food.
      the producers benefit financially, but the biggest winners are the customers, as well as the safeguarding of national interests. subsidies are a tool for accomplishing goals, not a concession.

      @@v.a.n.e.well when I studied economics, subsidies were a way for the state to correct a market failure. Subsidies for high energy foods might have been needed in the 1950s but now they are skewing the market so people end up eatening more fattening foods.

    Yah, but you are just saying "protein" .... there are plant based proteins as well, i.e. legumes. So I think it is also important Dr McDougall to not vilify "protein". Be specific on what you are saying, don't generalize -- or you will be no different than others.
