- In this one I make a #picture #frame using just a #tracksaw. Why? Because I was asked to! Thanks Dafydd @thedeafmaker for asking the question over on 10MW Plus!

Now, to be absolutely clear, I do not recommend this as a method for aspiring picture frame makers to go into production - there’s a reason why commercial framers use cast iron Morso guillotines - but, if you need a quick frame making - or perhaps a last-minute gift - and all you have available is a tracksaw, then yes, it’s absolutely doable. Enjoy!
This is my last scheduled public RUclips video for 2022, thank you so much for watching. I'll be back in 2023, but not until February; I’ve been posted regular videos for six years now, pretty much without missing a beat, and I think it’s time to take a breather. I’ll still be posting regularly to the members at 10MinuteWorkshop Plus and the public RUclips videos will resume in February, but for January I’ll be taking a break and catching up with family, where I can.
My very best wishes for the festivities, and I'll see you next year.
Peter

You recently made me buy a Domino. Now I want a tracksaw as well. My wife will probably contact you shortly 😂
She won’t be the first..! 😂👍👍
You can’t watch Peter and not end up buying a track saw 😂
I’ve built my entire shop based on Peter’s work and his RUclips channel!!
This channel must have been responsible for a good few TS55 and Domino sales. Come on Festool, gift him the table saw he has his eye on.
Nah I went for a Bosch saw and two dominoes. Wife does not realise Festool is like a designer bag very expensive…..
From a genius jig to a Rembrand, thnks Peter for all the wood wisdom, cya in februari, all the best.
Thank you! Same to you and yours too! 🙌👍👍
you really make the track saw look like the multitool of a workshop. I am gonna save up and get one with a nice work table like you have and finally get rid of my cheap jobsite tablesaw.
It amazes me what you can do with a track saw. I own a table saw and when I do a tricky cut like a rebate, I always say you can't do that with a track saw and yet you prove me wrong every time. Even your jigs are so useful and so simple. You are the track saw king!
Thank you! There are a few cuts where a tale saw is easier, and one or two that just aren’t possible with a tracksaw because of the direction they tilt, but generally speaking they’re a very versatile tool. 👍
Thanks for all you do to pass on your tips & tricks. Merry Christmas & a Happy New Year to you and yours. Take care & stay safe.
Thank you, you too! 👍
have a good holiday... your videos are always time well spent...
Thank you! 🙌👍
Always good. Michael Alm also has a great frame video (floating frame) and a few helpful mounting tips.
Good work, that jig shows its worth. Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year, e you in February.
Cheers Ben! And you too! 🙌👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop e? See! ;)
I wish you all the best, take care and I can’t wait till February. Have a wonderful Christmas.
Thank you, you too! 👍
Beautiful, smart and neat.
Thank you! 👍
You may be happy with how it went together but more importantly is Mrs 10 Minute happy?
Hope your festive season is going well. Best wishes
She was happy enough to order another two Paul! 😂 Festive fortnight going well, thanks - hope yours is too! 🙌👍
Thank you for all the videos and advise Peter. Have yourself a wonderful Christmas and a well earned break. Take care.
Thanks Steve, you too! 👍👍
Nice one Peter. Have a great Xmas and NY 👍
Thank you! You too! 👍
The mileage you get out of a tracksaw is incredible. I live in a camper and a tablesaw just doesn't make sense for me but a tracksaw takes up significantly less room. I just now found your channel and am going through your tracksaw specific videos. Keep up the great work.
Thanks! 👍
Another achievable project. Thanks Peter. Have a happy Christmas with your family and enjoy the break!
Thanks Mandy! And you too! 🙌👍
Thank you for all your vids this year Peter. It was great to meet you at Makers Central too. Hope you and your family have a great Christmas and a happy and peaceful New Year.
Thank you! 🙌👍
Hope you and your family have a very enjoyable Christmas and Happy New Year.
great video.. that's a pretty slick way to make a rabbet with the track saw, even though you appear to have 8+ routers in your shop lol
Thanks! Wouldn’t be a tracksaw picture frame if I used a router though! 👍
You always show such a practical approach to simple projects, which makes them achievable to us mere mortals. I would be interested in seeing your approach to making 'floating' frames. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Thank you, same to you too! 🙌👍
Looks really nice! 👍 Have a great Christmas Peter and family and EVERYBODY who watches your work here! Have a good one all!
Thank you! Same to you and everyone too! 🙌👍
Great job Peter. Thanks for sharing all the valuable advice and hints and tips/ reviews throughout the year. Hope you have a fab Xmas and a fantastic 2023! 👏👍😀🍺
Thank you! 🙌👍
Really beautiful work, Peter! Nicely done! 😃
I need to try to make some as well!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Merry Christmas and happy new year!
Thank you, and you too! 🙌👍
Always interesting to see how you set about even a simple project like this Peter, as always a well organised build with a neat outcome !
Thanks for all your output during 2022, and enjoy your well earned break, Happy New Year !
Nice little project 👌
Merry Christmas, Peter, and a very happy New Year!

Lidaldi strikes again! A Christmas family project, the family will be pleased, possibly. Merry Christmas and many thanks for a great years content.
Thank you! 👍
Great video as usual Peter, I liked the multi camera angles at the start. Very fancy. You've kept me very interested this year with your videos and made me make a few purchases including the Bench Dogs fence system. You deserve a break. All the very best to you and the family and look forward to more content in 2023.
Thank you! Very best wishes to you and yours, too! 👍
Peter, thank you for all the insightful videos in 2022. Happy Christmas.
Thanks you! And dry best wishes to you and yours too! 🙌👍
Hi Peter, just noticed you have reached 200k subscribers. I am happy to say that I am one of them. 😊
Thank you! Yes, happened Monday. 👍👍
You did a great job with this. I found your channel a while ago just as I was starting to think about making some picture frames. I came close to buying a track saw but went with a table saw since it seemed better suited to ripping long narrow widths and also because with the supplied fence, jigs not were required. I tried cutting the rabbets with the saw but found that the router table worked better for me. There's no doubt that the miters are much more accurate with the jig you created and it allows you to do everything with a single saw whilst I have to break out the miter saw to cut the corners. My "shop" is basically my back deck so all these tools are a pain to manage which may, in a few months, lead me back to the track saw now that your video has demonstrated how easy it is to use for frame making.
Thanks! 👍
Your channel is amazing! Love your videos, creativity and detailed explanations 🙂great cabinet maker!
Thanks so much! 🙌
Finally getting into printing my own photo's and finding out - frames are expensive!! So this is very timely for me. Last hurdle - sourcing good glass. sigh.... And matting is a deep rabbit hole too.
Nicely done! You should make an end grain cutting board only using a track saw.
Thanks! I think Keith @RagnBoneBrown has just done that - though he did cheat a bit and use his thicknesser! 😂 👍 ruclips.net/video/rJ_-ksGDSao/видео.html
Thanks for all the videos in 2022. Merry Christmas and happy new year to you.🎄👏

Thank you! 🙌👍
All the best, Peter. Enjoy your break.

Merry Christmas Peter! Greetings from the Netherlands.
Thank you! And best wishes from London! 🙌👍
Nicely done with the track saw and looks really good. Seasons greetings to you.
Thank you, same to you too! 🙌👍
You made that look easy. Such a skilful woodworker. I am sure you would have said during the build video but I can’t remember and I’m being a bit lazy but what is the depth of your MFT / micro jig hybrid worktop?
Thanks! Front to back, my DIY workshop MFT is 800mm or thereabouts; a bit deeper than a regular MFT/3, it’s handy extra space. 👍👍
Thanks Peter. It seems a great size. Have a great Christmas and new year break.
Fair play Peter, that is nowhere near as easy to do as you make it look! My picture frame done using only a track saw would come out more "abstract" I think
Still hoping to find a video that will let me get my mitered cuts repeatable. But this was a great video. I definitely would like to make a jig like that
Excellent topic, since I'm planning the same only with mirrors! No tracksaw however, but I do plan on making that mitre jig! Happy Holidays and see you in February!
Thanks, you too! 👍
I hope that glueing jig is Square Enough for this job 😁 Hope my wife doesn't see this one. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours, enjoy your time off and see you next year here on RUclips.
Thanks Colin! Yes, pretty sure it was square enough! 😂👍👍
All the best Peter👍👍🍺🍺
Thanks, you too! 👍👍
Well that was unexpected, I expected you to make those rebates with multiple passes, but the way you did it turns out much cleaner of course. Also, given some practice, it's probably a lot faster. Guess I could modify my table to be able to make this kind of cut, too.
"I would normally use glazing points but I don't know where they are" 🤣
Always love your honesty in your videos.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thanks! Same to you and yours, too! 👍👍
Congrats on 200k Peter, well deserved!

Thanks Alan! 👍
Excellent as always Peter, just brilliant mate👍
Cheers David! 🙌👍
been waiting for something like this, I will be attempting a very large frame for a map - thanks for more track saw content as I can't stand every US based 'diy' channel using a fortune of tools in their huge workshops
Thank you! Always keeping it real here in the 10MinuteWorkshop! 😂👍🙌
I saw your paper tape holder and I went WOW 😍
😆👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop 9:43 So pleased you included this - whilst watching many videos I have tried to figure out why had a pull down blind over a bench.
Merry Christmas.
Thanks for all your videos this year.
Merry Christmas Peter & great new year to you & yours
Thanks, same to you too! 🙌👍
Watching right away!
Bit of a silly question Peter, but where do you take the cover photos for your videos? It doesn't immediately look like you take them in the workshop (surely not enough space for the lighting, backdrops etc alongside the benches, tools, vacuum hoses etc). Fancy doing a BTS video for us and sharing your photographic tips too?
They're shot in the workshop; I've done a few little clips and snippets for the channel members over the years, but it's not something that would play well with the rest of the channel content. There's a backdrop that pulls down over the 'saw wall' and the existing lights are all daylight balance LEDs, so they're pretty easy to shoot, usually a still pulled from a 4k video clip. 👍
Merry Christmas and a most Happy New Year,,
Thank you! Same to you too! 🙌👍
Since i watch your videos, i'm pretty sure there is no need for a table saw 😀
Merry xmas to you and your family 🎅
Thank you, same toy you and your family too! 🙌👍
Framed 🎉❤
Thanks Peter! I'd be interested to see how you might add splines to reinforce the corners.
I suppose you clamp the frame at 45 degrees to the front of the bench, cut a kerf, then add the spline?
Not sure splines would add much strength tbh; you’d probably be better of popping a biscuit or a couple of dowels in there, or small dominos. 👍
Happy Holidays
Thanks, you too! 👍
Merry Christmas!
Thank you, you too! 👍
Very nice ! And so easy.
Nice project, happy Christmas

The frame came out really well and it’s a project I’ve wanted to try for some time. Can I ask how many coats of lacquer did you use ?
Thank you.
Thanks Graham! Just two coats of lacquer on this, and it dries really fast. 👍
Great video
Hi Peter and Happy New Year. That was interesting, I had saved it for watching later as I do want to make some picture frames. Before viewing I was rather expecting you to use the MFT holes, bench dogs and a reference stop (or two). Do I now need to find your video on making the mitre box?
Thanks Norman! The problem with using the MFT is that a) not everyone has one, and b) for mitres especially, the rail has to be fully supported, which is harder to do on the MFT. The mitre box link is in the description, but it was the video from a week before this one! 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop Found it - cheers Peter.👍
I've been working with plywood a lot but will have to use MDF on my next project. What type of sawblade do you use for cutting mdf? A cross cut blade to make super clean cuts or a rip blade to make faster cuts and reduce dust? I'm really worried a cross cut blade will burry my shop in MDF dust. I'm using a table saw, but I'm sure the blade type will be the same
Just the stock blade is fine in MDF - should give super clean results. 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop cheers, thanks a lot
Oooh what went in the frame Peter? An early edition Ordnance Survey map..?
Lovely result - and Merry Christmas to you
Thanks! It’s a reprinted map of the area where I live from just before our house was built. A very thoughtful gift from out children a while back. 👍👌
Would have had to reinforce the miters with a domino or sticking with the track saw, cut a slot in each corner and install a spline. Nice frame, thanks for posting.
For my next trick - cutting splines with a tracksaw… 😂👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop I think the simplest answer to reinforcing the corners is basic dowels - you can use any, even the cheapest jig to add those as they are actually perpendicular to the ends.
All the Best to You and Family this Holiday! I love watching your videos. You work the track saw wonderfully. I knew a worker who was quite adept with a big plunge router. When I complemented a cut he had just made, he said, “I could cut your hair with this thing if you could hold still”! How about you with your track saw? Thanks 🙏
Short back & sides or just a trim?? 😂 And thanks! 👍
Another excellent video, thank you Peter.
Do you use the dovetail clamping on your workbench often? I remember watching the original video where you introduced it and then incorporated it into your mft top, but haven't really seen it being used since?
On this video, I note you used the dovetail clamps as "regular" mft/track clamps through the dog holes.
Thanks again.
Thanks! The microjig dovetail clamps get used now and then - they’re used in the slots as well in this vid - but I don’t find them especially convenient to use, and when I change the MFT top I’ll probably try regular t-slots instead. 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop thanks for the quick reply Peter.
Yes, I missed them in the video, my mistake!
I've recently gotten a t track router cutter so plan on putting a grid into an Mft top when I get around to making it!
Thanks
Can you get those dog clips for Evolution tracks? On another not, having recently built a full MFT, I’ve found having some lengths of 20mm dowel very handy. I use it to make jigs or long stops on the bench, really handy.
No, the Evo rails don’t have the upward-facing t-slot , so you can’t attach them. And I use a length of 20mm conduit - works a treat and is a couple of quid a length. 👍
What can a mitre saw be used for making things etc
Hi Peter - some advice if you can please.
I have a Makita and trying to make repeated accurate cuts on the “wrong side” using the method (edge guide) you are using at around 07:40 in your video.
Find that at times the cut-off piece goes flying out the back usually damaged.
I am using a fence and a sacrificial 6mm MDF under the work piece. It reminds me of the warning not to use the fence as an edge guide when using the Mitre on a table saw. (Kick back)
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
If it’s the waste-side piece that you want to keep then you need a sacrificial strip taped or clamped to the benchtop to stop the waste-side piece moving; doesn’t have to be big, just enough to stop,it shooting away. 👍 HTH P
@@10MinuteWorkshop Thanks - will give it a stab
Good morning Peter
You cant sneek a new Mirka sander into a video without an explanation however brief. Didnt you know that that was against the rules? Happy Xmas from sunny South Africa.
Thank you! And best wishes from London! Don’t think this counts as sneaking though! 🤔👍Money, Mouth, Mirka [video 507] ruclips.net/video/5XDUWQ_Jodo/видео.html
Hope everything is ok for January
Thanks! Me too! 👍
Great presentation, however it would have been faster and easier if you made the rebate operation at the start with the long piece rather than repeating it 4 times ..👍❤.
No, you have much more control over a smaller workpiece if you do the rebates this way. But feel free to try it your way, if you think it’s better. 🤷♂️
That would be better if you used router with rabbeting bit. With track saw alinging across very long distance is not going to be accurate.
👍🎅🏻🎅🏻👍
👍👍🍻
Where have you gone?
If you watch to the end of this video I do say that I’m taking some time off from posting publicly; back next week, or the one after. 👍
I'm almost certain I remember my wife expressing an interest in taking up picture framing as time filler in her impending retirement. So Santa is bringing her enough gear to start her off...I know, I know, it is a high risk strategy, but I've had it with the barely concealed, perfume again, eye rolls. Wish me luck.
Nice! Hope it’s successful! 👍
😁 Did you get her the Makita or Festool "framing kit"? 😉
@@elguapo1507 Don't!....I might yet get that, just incase bottle of Channel, if my nerve fails me.
