How to Change a Brake Light on a 2005 Nissan Altima

- This is a real time video on changing a brake light in a 2005 Nissan Altima. I've pointed out some helpful information:
-how to release & easily replace the weather stripping/carpet cover
-how to remove the cargo net connector
-a standard socket won't reach over the bolt, I had to use an adjustable wrench but just to loosen the nut/washer; I then used my hand to remove them
-location of plastic posts which stabilize the light casing
-identify which bulb is being replaced for a brake light
-how to use simple leverage to remove the connector for the electrical
-where to use dielectric grease on the new bulb
PLEASE NOTE: You really shouldn't touch the bulb with your bare hand. You can use rubber or laytex gloves or a cloth to prevent the oils from your skin touching the bulb. Since these bulbs burn at high temps, the oil will reduce their life.
PANEL CLIPS: Most of the clips do have a center popout that will do 2 things:
- 1) make it easier to remove. Just put a flathead screwdriver under the center raised circle and pry it up slightly. The locking stem will then be released (aka flattened) so the clip can be removed easily
- 2) you won't have to go buy a new one to replace the one you broke cuz you watched this video and saw me just yank it out ;)
If you do break your panel clips, you can buy replacement ones at the hardware store or an autoparts store. Just beware that those replacement clips may NOT have the center stem pop-out feature. I couldn't find pop-out style panel replacement clips at Westlake or Advanced Auto.
OMG. You deserve a youtube award. A girl just showed me how to replace a break light bulb. She did it with 1 hand too. Girl, you just saved me some $. thank you Erica.
I’m here 12 years later to say, thank you for helping me fix my car!
I just spent 15 minutes sitting in my drivers seat while two guys from Oil Changes struggled and ultimately gave up trying to figure how to get at my brake light. This was my first hit on Google. I'm doing a facepalm right now seeing how simple it is. I'll go and get the bulb tomorrow. Thanks very much!
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!! The first time my bulb went out I paid the dealer to replace it and just recently my bulb went out again and due to your helpful video it gave me the ability to replace it myself. Thanks again! Ur awesome!
Yes, somebody said "don't touch the bulb without gloves or other thing in your fingers" I been told that that can damage the bulb. Good video!!
She does a much better an more thorough job of explaining the process than most other people.
Because of this Video I successfully changed my brake lights..I just had to put a lil elbow grease pulling the bulb out.. Thanks Erica!!! Awesome vid.
Thank you so much! I got as far as taking the nuts off and then was stuck - the diagrams in the manual were useless. Googled it, your video came up first, and it was excellently helpful!
Thank so much for this video. You are really good. I am a guy and could not figure it out. I was becoming like super frustrated. (LOL). I love these youTube DIY videos.....saves me so much time, money, energy, and frustration! 👍👍👍👍👍
Great video. The only thing I would add is the carpet tabs have a center that pops out making it easier to remove. All other google sites had marginal written directions. I had trouble locating the two nuts that all of them refered to. I did'nt realize that they were hidden under the wiring harness tabs as pointed out in your video. Great job!!! It worked on a 2009 Altima as well.
Thank you so much for posting this video. Changing the brake light was a breeze.
Thank you that was so much more help than the owner's manual.
My car is an '05 Altima and so far it's been my second time replacing both bulbs and my second time watching this detailed instructional video.
This video is so helpful. Thank you so much!
thanks for tutorial!!! nice to see a women who knows about cars
Excellent instructions. I did it. So much easier when someone shows you how..
I have a 2004 Altima and this process is the same.. Second time I needed this video. Great job and many thanks. 1st time was a right turn signal bulb. This time is was both brake light bulbs (who would have known).
Troubleshooting process used: Ruled out the brake switch since the window brake lamp was still working. The fuse still looked good but I swapped it with a known good one anyway. Still no brake lights. Used this video instruction to pull both bulbs and check them for continuity. Bam! Bad bulbs. Problem solved, and bulbs replaced. Thank you again!!!
Nissan really made it a hassle to do simple changes on thier cars. I hate that but there beautiful cars
Exactly. That's why I love Honda it would have taken 2 seconds no tools needed...
Very helpful, thank you! Although, the carpet clips are actually two pieces that come apart easily and allow the clip to be removed without damaging it... Just use a small slotted screw driver to pry the "coin" shaped cap off the top of the clip (look closely) and the rest will pull out nicely...
+Jeremiah Patoka yup that works like a charm!
I'm glad I found this video. It helped me a lot thanks
Thanks a lot for sharing this video. I took my car to a service station & they asked for 50 bucs...!!!!
I saw this video & i could do it within 15 minutes.. btw, mine is a NIssan 2009 Sentra..
Thanks a lot. This video really helped me. There are two things that your viewers should know though. 1. The clips that hold the fabric part on are two individual pieces. There's a little button piece that slides out of the main clip. Once you take that out the rest of the clip will come out much easier. 2. Don't handle the light built with your bare hands. The oil from your skin will cause the glass to heat up irregularly and bubble, resulting in a significantly reduced lifetime.
You rock, thank you so much. I've replaced tail lights before, but when I peeled back the carpet, I was, to say the least, befuddled. Your guide was straightforward and extremely helpful. The Hanes repair manual I bought for car was a grand total of not helpful to boot. Again, thank you.
This is a well produced video for a street mechanic. I only would suggest that the size of the nut be placed in the video
Thanks EricaceaeCalluna. I have a 08 Altima and I can't find any videos or blogs of changing my stop light. But this video helped a lot. Especially the part when I had to pull that hook out.
Thanks a lot! i wasn't sure how to take those clips out, I didn't want to brake it, but now i know it's the only way./
Thank You very much. This video is very simple the watch and understand as well as covering the entire operation including the bulb type info.
Thanks for making this look so easy! I'm ready to run to Kraegen now to get my brake light bulb and tackle this little task.
Thx!!! - didn't think the assembly popped out externally for bulb replace; was getting tied up in knots on how to access from inside the trunk.
'06 Altima
Awesome. Your video made this quick and easy.
Wish there was a love button... Thank you for simplifying it for new car owners like me
Very useful video. I followed the directions (including using Jeremiah Patoka's suggestion on removing the clip. The process took very little time. The only issue I had was that one of the nuts insisted on me using the wrench almost the entire way to remove it after loosening it. The other nut came off easily using my hand after I loosened it. I saved my friend $25 going to the mechanic to replace this bulb.
Awesome video! Thank you. I was going to take it to my mechanic but to heck with that! I’ll do it myself. Many thAnks!
Jesus. They make it so complicated. my friend got an old Honda, and you honestly open the trunk, and everything is right there. My God. I have NO CLUE how to do the front head lights.. ugh
Thanks, this video made it possible for me to change the bulb, thanks again!
This is a great video. Not only helpful procedure steps, but also excellent details with practical tips for each nut, clip, carpet, etc.. I've done this once but doing it again this week so this is a big help. Thank you. .
Outstanding vid. Thank you. Now I have to go do about a 1,000 push ups to regain my lost Chest-beating Macho points; but hey, we all gotta do what we gotta do! LOL
Thanks again.
Thank you sooo much !! My mom and I were really stomped it really meant alot for me to be able to help her
Great Vid! I just replaced mine for the first time. This is a lot more thorough than the manual Thanks!
Awesome Straight Forward Video!!!!!!
Thank you for posting this video! I changed my brake light without any problems due to you! Take care!
Straight forward instructions ....thank you
Thank you this was very helpful!!!
the video was such great help! thank you lots!
thank you, this was very helpful!
After watching your video I was able replaced my brake lights with ease..thank you Erica/NightWindZero!
Helped me a bunch great instructions Thanks and happy new year
@RedDogByrd thanks for the input. My 'panel clips' did not have a center pin, so I had to pull them out. Someone else mentioned about a center pin. If you can see them in my video, my don't have that option. But, thanks for the info on the different kinds of clips/pins.
Excellent video. Nice work. Thank you very much.
Thank you for this great video, you are great for helping others complete this install, thanks again!!!
Saved me $40! Thanks!
It took longer then 3 minutes bit thank you very much for your video. :-)
I wanted to say thank you for helping me with this! It work just what you said! :) You are awesome thanks!
@sweetjagirl You are welcome! Per one of the other posters, the life of the bulb can possibly be extended by not touching the bulb with your fingers. I know on halogen lights, the oil from even clean fingers can reduce the life of the bulb due to the high temp. However, on standard bulbs, I'm not sure how much it matters. Either way, now you know how easy and cheap it is :)
Thanks for this, @EricaceaeCalluna! You've saved me quite a bit of headache.
The bulb replacement is Sylvania 3157. With numbers P27/7W stamped on the black part of the bulb.
Great video!!
Very benefical.
Saved me a good grip of cash
Great video - one small suggestion before you put it all back together just test the new light bulb just to be sure - but thanks again
I missed what the dielectric grease was for? Thanks so much for your help. I have a 2007 Nissan Sentra, but it seems to be the same set up.
Thank you! The most informative tutorial on this from beginning to end. It takes a Woman to explain in full detail what we need to know.
Dinner not necessary, but thanks for the offer. I worked on my stove and dishwasher too, but only put the really poor quality dishwasher video up.
Wow a white woman that can change a brake light bulb on a car,, I'm very impress with you thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the vid. Very useful.
Thank you so much
Thank you! That helped me alot!
@sracerboy thanks, sincerely, but no need to feel like a wus. I was just fortunate enough to have the time to figure this out!
@raiderlove4life You're funny & welcome! It was kind of funny trying to manage the camera and change the bulb. But, if I can do it with 1 hand, anyone can do it. Glad to help.
Thank you, very much. It's always nice to know what you are getting into before taking the assembly out. Thanks, again, for taking the time to make this video and share your knowledge.
Thank you
Thanks to this video, I was able to change my break light! Hardest part was outside carpet plastic nut. Poorly designed piece.
great job. thank you for the help!
great video. very helpful.
sorry for the delay in responding. Dielectric grease is NOT necessary. It goes on the metal parts of the tab of the bulb if that makes sense. It helps the metal components from degrading from moisture in the air thereby keeping a better electrical contact...basically, longer life on the bulb :D
Thanks. This was sooooo handy!!! :)
Very nice video.
@viddawg8 So glad you found this video. Once you see it, it goes pretty smoothly.
Great Video 👍.
Thanks, video was very helpful :)
@abeismain
If they break, you can get replacements online, an auto parts shop, hardware store or Nissan dealer. They are called "door panel" or "door & trim" clips and cost $1-$2.
@Junyar You're welcome. Videos do help out a lot with details!
Next time you need to do this, make sure you dab a bit of grease on every part, Including the bulb sockets.Next time all the parts will slide right out.
@charger2538 you should try changing the front headlamp bulbs! You have to take off the air dilyer system on the drivers side and the washer fluid tank on yje passenger side...all the while scratching up your hand in yhe super tight space. Oh and don't forget to check your fuses...i blew both of mine changing the front headlamp bulbs.
Actually, I have changed the front as well . But there was already a video for that 😉
I'm so glad I found this video. Changed the brake light all by myself!! I was so proud! Couldn't have done it without you!!! Thank you!!
@jsmith9147 I'm glad i could help. That's the exact same reason why I made the video...I couldn't find help online myself.
@shaynicholas22 super glue has a tendency to become brittle. I'd look for Marine glue which is specifically designed for plastics and water exposure.
Thank You! it helped
Great video, however you don't have to rip the black plastic fasteners out. Just take a strong fingernail or small screwdriver and pull the center pin out and then you can easily pull the fastener out. Just go to any auto parts store and see how these pins work.
beautifully done.. thank you. You made my day!
@Muziqlovher Super cool! hopefully the Hyundai is close enough to the Nissan that you can successfully change your light bulb.
Excellent , Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice video
Lol thanks for the video, helped a bunch :)
Yes, there have been a couple other commenteors who have said the same. As I replied to them
1. Not all clips have the center pop-out, especially those purchased from hardware stores. I spent a great deal of time at Advanced Auto Parts & WestLake Hardware 2wks ago looking for panel clips that have a center pop-out that would fit my car and they didn't have any. I will try O'Reilly & AutoZone next.
2) Yes, oils on your skin can reduce bulb life. Good news, we know for next time ;)
I have a question!
I got a 2003 Altima, and i have a problem with the rear stop light (right one).
When i push the brake, the right brake doesn't light up. However, when I turn on the lights (parking and low beam) the bulb does work.
I think it's a bad fuse, do you agree with me?
Thank you for your time.
@GregJHorak I changed the front light some time ago, but haven't had to since. I did some quick research and see that the 2003 seems to be a HUGE PITA. Sorry about that.
RUclips won't let me post back a direct link, but do a Google search on this to see if it helps. nissanforums "how-can-i-change-bulb-altima"
Don't forget to align the headlight though. Park your car at dusk facing a wall/garage door, etc. use the screws in the housing to align the light beam.
Yep and there weren't any detailed videos online before I made this one...which is why I made it ;)
Thank you ❤️
My wife's 2005 altima brake light bulb keeps working its way out of the housing, causing the bulb to not work. We have to check it literally every day before she goes to work. I dont know whether this is a design flaw from Nissan or if the Sylvania bulbs we buy are too large for the housing. Either way it sucks...
Really wish you had shown putting the grease on 5:35 I know you said just on the metal parts, but my bulb has long extension and the "Bulb Grease" says just at the base, the guy at the auto shop said on the connectors. So frustrating because there is no videos about this!
do u know how to change the middle one above the licenses plate?
