Alright…the coincidence of Mythic Games announcement of liquidation has drawn the web of negativity to this list. I’m not pulling the list down because I like the games regardless of who published (or didn’t publish or didn’t finish) the games in question. You can agree or disagree with me, but I simply ask you to be civil to people here no matter what side you find yourself on. Freedom of speech doesn’t equal freedom from treating each other common decency and respect. Thanks for being here, folks!
Right on Sam! Great games stay great games no matter what happened in the background. I truely hope someone will hire the leading game designer from Mythic as they have the perfect talent and knack to create the most amazing board games. Would also be great if someone would rescue the games very much the same way Steamforged rescued Street Masters and Euthia. Think they bought the Solomon Kane assets so there might be something new or a re-print in the future aside from their RPG. Quite a few failed crowdfunded games re-emerged with time e.g. Evil Dead where they even produced free copies for the previous backers and Village Attacks that should be back to KS soon under a new company. Not sure how CMON will handle HEL but CMON does have a great record of fun games in my books :) And thanks for being here yourself, Sam! :D Greatly enjoy your content! Happy gaming everyone! PS: just a reminder for whom it concerns: Crowdfunding is a type of speculative investment. It is not a shop-system or a loan. Everyone signs that they are ok if they never receive a reward if a project fails ... you are entitled to be sad but never should there be overreactions like happened in the case of Mythic!
"Dead of Winter" is a good one. I think the theme of the two player game "InBetween" is probably the creepiest of the games we own. However, our quintessential Halloween game is still the cooperative "Ghost Stories". I love how it feels so easy at the beginning and by the end you are desperate for a lucky roll to save the day. Back when my wife and I first started dating, the first time she came to my house, I was hosting a Halloween party. Although we did not finish the game, Ghost Stories was the first game we ever played together and we have been gaming ever since. Spooky and sentimental at the same time. 👻
I would HIGHLY recommend Terrorscape. It's a 10/10 for me. I also love Monsters on Board! While the components are well produced, it’s crazy to think that a deluxe production almost derails a great game, but it does. The minis tip over easily and are too big for the board. The score tracker is dumb and tokens are also too big. In their own boxing video, the box has lid lift after essentially doing a component drop into the box. I’m hoping to fix several issues with some upgrades but I feel like this game would have done a TON better if they would have had a better thought out production. The gameplay is a solid 8-8.5 for me.
Very nice. First thing i did was 3d print stackable scoring tokens. The ones they send are bad. I like the monsters and dont mind the size. The monoliths are definitely top heavy. I dont have any lid lift issues. But i don't put the cars in the box. Cheers, JT
Great picks. I still haven't managed to try Resident Evil, but it sounds amazing every time JT talks about it. I thought I'd struggle with this one because I don't really do much for Halloween, but it turns out I really like games that fit the spooky definition. 5: Auztralia. Way down the list because it doesn't really have as much tension as the others. There are zombies and Lovecraftian monsters, but this is here because I love the game. 4: Dead of Winter. The zombies aren't really the thing you're worried about, but hidden traitor games add tension, that's a pattern that's going to come up again. 3: Unfathomable. I did dock it some points because it doesn't quite fit the definition at the start of the video. Lovecraftian horror mixed with paranoia still fits pretty well though. 2: Fury of Dracula. Dracula leaves unpleasant surprises for the hunters, the hunters try to kill Dracula. Even if a solo hunter finds Dracula, they can go from predator to prey instantly. 1: Nemesis. It's the board game I'd hate to live inside. Despite Halloween being associated with fantasy horror rather than sci-fi horror, this game makes walking down a corridor tense. Legendary Alien just missed out, so I guess I don't have a wide range of themes on my list. Summoner Wars isn't scary at all, but there are undead factions. I'm getting Terrorscape before next Halloween so will make next year's list as I won't stick to 5 at that point. Mordheim would've made this list if I'd played the tabletop version more than messing with it on Tabletop Simulator for a while, I have a digital version that's too different for me to be able to list it. It would've been ideal, there's tension around every corner and you're in the City of the Damned with cults, undead, vampire hunters and giant rats.

Really like Monsters on Board glad it made Top 5. Have either of you played Dreadful Meadows, Abomination: Heir of Frankenstein, or The Bloody Inn. Those are some of my favorites
Great lists again. Nemesis and Final Girl would also be on my list. For a party setting I would include Ling of Tokyo with the Halloween monster or Mysterium . Otherwise SubTerra, Mansion of Madness 2nd Edition or any Gloomhaven version.
Thanks for the top list, Sam and JT! :D JT, think you should look into Machina Arcana which is a rather heavy steam punk Cthulhuesque game and perfect for 1-2 players. Have the feeling you might like it ^^ Cthulhu: Death May Die is our groups absolute favourite. Guess we played it more that 40 times: every currently available scenario at least twice at 5 players or even 6 with GM (which is actually the smoothest experience). Every game is so tight, so immersive and so fun. Really looking forward to seasons 3&4 :D Nemesis comes in a close second for me. ^^ Honorary mentions go to the Arkham(2nd/3rd)/Eldrich Horror board games that I love but hardly ever play anymore ^^ Tonight I will be playing Marvel Zombies at my FLGS and they will run Zombicide Black Plage parallel. So looking forward to it. Winter of the dead fell flat in my group - we hate the traitor mechanic, the Crossroads Cards never triggered in any of our 5-6 games and as pure co-op was also almost impossible to win as the items you need are always randomly on the very bottom of the stack ... give me Last Night on Earth any day over it :P Also really thematic but heavier is another from Flying Frog: "A Touch of Evil" (there was even a recent playthrough on the Dice Tower) On the lighter side, a bit like Night Cage is SubTerra which is really spelunking with creepy shadows out to hunt you while you cooperatively race for the exit. Have a great Spooky Season and plenty of good gaming rounds :) PS: Mythic is officially dead now. They have been liquidated this or last month and we will likely never see any of their other games or the rest of Darkest Dungeon. They made some of my absolute favourite games in Solomon Kane and Darkest Dungeon. Also would have loved the redesigned Monsterpocalypse. Oh well ... time to get over that horror I guess :P
@@Oaklestat :D Cool, hope you can get a copy. If possible try to get the 3rd edition (2nd is ok as well but has a few typos) - it is a bit streamlined compared to the 1st (however, there is a fan base for the 1st as well and some retain the old loot system which makes it harder imho ^^). If you have Cthulhu Death May Die or Mansions of Madness you could use Minis from there to substitute the standees ^^ The standees fit the art style very well and made the game rather affordable at the time. This is in no way a short game but it is rather compact on the table if you can leave it set up. (3-4 hrs solo) :) Also it does come with really weird card sizes so sleeving might be a pain ^^
