    Wow, crazy segment. I hope you guys get to play Elder Scrolls so that Massive Darkness 2 vs Too Many Bones debate you were having can evolve. I'm shocked that Star Wars: Rebellion fell this low. Someone has to play these games with Sam. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is great. If I had to go and play a game of Pandemic now out of all Pandemic versions, I'd play a game of this. I might actually do that, it sounds fun. I always put Legacy Season 0 on my list because I combine all Pandemics, but this is great, and still keeps Pandemic fresh. I really need to play a lot of JT's list still. There are some great games on there that I have played, Skymines is in my top 5 Eurogames of all time.

I like Bloodrage, too. I usually don't care so much area control games, but I feel Bloodrage is hilarious one, it's not so serious I have here more cubes than you area controlling, I feel it's more let's all fight and see what will happend. I have a question. Can you move leaders with the strategy action? And if you can’t, do they just die whenever you split up a leader from their legion using the strategy action? Especially important to know especially for the atreides player in the beginning as all of their legions are accompanied by a leader. I played this once and this was just boggling my mind. It just doesn’t make sense.

    Cutting this in half so I can work out which part of my message RUclips keeps eating. I'm glad to see XenoShyft making a list. It's such a great game. Probably my most played CMON game, admittedly because I used to solo it on a phone app a ton years and years ago. I might've been able to do better at an Erik Lang list than a CMON list, especially as Sheriff of Nottingham is in that grey area. Rising Sun and The Godfather: Corleone's Empire are fine games that didn't make your lists, though they'd be fairly far down my list as I haven't been able to play them anywhere near as much as I'd like. You guys hit everything else on my list, although I don't have a ton of plays of the other games. Speaking of that, I've never played Dune: War for Arrakis. I know I'd love the game. War of the Ring is in my top 5 games of all time. Blood Rage is in my top 10 of all time, so War for Arrakis has a chance of being my favourite CMON game, but I seriously doubt I'll ever play it. I own War of the Ring and I own Star Wars Rebellion, not to mention other chunky 2 player games. So unless I meet a Dune fan that doesn't like LOTR or Star Wars, I can't imagine ever getting it to the table. For whatever reason, Dune games have massive conflicts with similar games. Getting the original or remade Dune game to the table is also a challenge, despite how brilliant it is.

    Wow, did not expect the top 100 spoiler. Blood Rage is my #1, but I like the Loki strategy because I have tons of games that use the other strategies and only 1 that uses the Loki strategy, and it's fun to win by doing the least intuitive thing. I also heavily prioritize any rage stealing battle card that I see. I've never played anyone that has played Blood Rage more than I have, so I'm in a weird situation when it comes to playing this game. I probably shouldn't introduce this to new people no matter what warnings I give them. It's also really sad when I've been doing this for the entire first age and someone drafts the card that makes everyone discard their chosen battle cards and pick new ones, and I discard some other card, then spend the second age stealing everyone's rage.

    FINALLY getting here with time to comment on the TOP five. (FYI, this is REALLY hard to do without inadvertently posting spoilers, so sorry if I missed removing one) SAM- 5. GREAT theme and I agree with your statement. I JUST got the placeholder to give my son for Christmas as he loves the video game of which this is the “X the board game” more or less, and he’s been into this theme movie-wise lately, which has been great fun for father/son movie nights. 4. Wonderful theme that surprisingly I actually haven’t played much of in hobby gaming. I own a couple, and there is one that’s basically a roll and move that manages to be fun that’s been around for quite a while. I came by a couple recently but haven’t gotten them to the table yet. Your placeholder intrigues me because the video game genre you compare it to is another I don’t generally like. However, I loathe tower defense games and I LOVE those in board game format. JT’s comment - I’m both with you and not quite with you on this one, JT. Realism-wise you’re right, but fun-wise I’m 100% with Sam. I think I would really enjoy yours if it was Euro-style, but for Ameritrash, Sam’s would absolutely be superior. 3. Oof. Not entirely sure I’m with you on this one. I completely get what you’re saying, but I feel like depending on the game, I feel like they are more “X theme that happens to use THIS theme as its backdrop.” That being said, your placeholder is EXACTLY the game I would pick if in your shoes. There aren’t a lot of games that I would direct people to if they stated this theme is what they would like to try a game in. Most of the other big name ones I feel like you could slap almost any theme on (and plenty of companies have after that particular series exploded onto the market) and it would do just as well. This is really the only stand out that comes to mind for me. Well said, sir. 2. I am SO with you on this theme, Sam, especially in cinema. However, I’d be lying if I said I’ve played a lot of GAMES with this theme…or any. I think part of it is I’m worried about avoiding the theme entirely if my first game doesn’t feel like the theme. Your placeholder and the first you mention that isn’t your placeholder have both been very intriguing to me, although I think the placeholder wouldn’t get as much play as the other since I believe(?) the other is solo-able and I’m not sure I could get a lot of people to play this theme with me. 1. I really thought your #1 would be completely different! I am with you on this one for the same reason I’m with JT on his #2, even though they aren’t the same theme. I LOVE this general theme and think I would find it fun to play in, particularly your placeholder which has intrigued me for some time, but I haven’t had a chance to play it. Great #1! JT’s Comment - Call me, guys, I would LOVE to jump into this design or at least playtest it for you. This sounds AMAZING. JT - 5. This is a tough one for me. In general, definitely one of my favorite themes, but for the most part your placeholder for this theme is really the only one I feel like really CAPTURES the theme. Well, I guess the other game from this IP that is currently huge does that as well, but the others are decent GAMES, they just don’t feel like the theme comes through as well. 4. THIS is what I’m talking about. I have yet to play your placeholder game, but since I got back into the hobby a little under a year ago, I’ve found myself really loving pretty much any game from this publisher, so it is on the list when I a) Have the extra deneiro to put in it and b) have shelf space. I think Ashley and Christopher would enjoy this one as it really captures the feel of the movie before the one you said is your favorite in this theme. I’m not sure WHAT I would choose for a placeholder for this genre in general. I’m not entirely certain it would be yours, just based on what I’ve seen of it, I feel like it might lean into the other half of its hybrid theme more than this one, or if not a few others come to mind as general placeholders (one from the same publisher). But to each their own! Sam’s comment - This is entirely true, for sure. This is such a tough one as just an all-encompassing theme to find the perfect game for. 3. Ooh, you have me from the first time you say this theme. I’m not always like “YES PLEASE” with this theme, sometimes I just want lighter, and DEFINITELY don’t enjoy the video games in this theme (at least not the ones you mentioned right off that bat). Enjoy the IP of your placeholder, not sure I’d like the board game just because I’m not sold on how much it actually feels like the source material. But I could be (and probably am) completely wrong. Sam’s Question - I agree with JT’s general answer, but somewhat disagree with the example given at the end. I think that particular game is the epitome of high end of the spectrum. My favorite literary IP, I would argue, is a better example of where that one got put. 2. GREAT theme. This one is another one like my thoughts on Sam’s #2. I haven’t played a ton of games with this theme, mostly because of what you said you were surprised by, and also because I’m worried about hitting a bad one of the few right off the bat and being turned off from the theme in board gaming entirely. 1. This one, for me, as a general theme is a constant back and forth between this and your #4 for my #1, I think. However, your placeholder IP is definitely my favorite IP no matter the medium I’m accessing it through, and the game itself is just fantastic (and really, I love the main games in this line when it gets brought up, though I haven’t played any of the lesser known or at least lesser available ones). Each of these games somehow manages to FEEL like the theme they’re in while still having similar mechanics which allow you to really be able to play any of them if you’re able to play one of them. Also, my comment on your #3 regarding that IP is validated now, so yay! Hope you enjoyed my novel! :P

    • @AndrewGoenner
      @AndrewGoenner 2 дня назад

      And since RUclips doesn't like me being verbose, apparently, here is what I have to post as a comment on my comment for MY top five (this will be specific to hobby gaming, my overall favorite themes are definitely different, and my main #1 (or number 2 depending on the day) may not even be IN my top 5): 5. Cyberpunk - This could arguably be wrapped up with Science Fiction, but I find there is enough to differentiate it now when it comes to board games, that it deserves its own genre. If games I really enjoy continue to come out in this theme, this is likely to rise higher as it's the newest on my list. I find that if I enjoy a game with this theme, I REALLY enjoy this theme. My placeholder would be a toss-up between Tamashii and Metrorunner, though I'd lean more towards Tamashii. While the hacking mechanic in Metrorunner captures the feel of a completely different world like jacking in in Cyberpunk or Shadowrun, it DOES slow the game and if you don't enjoy that type of mini-game/puzzle, you're going to hate the game. 4. Racing - I really like racing board games. From the perfectly designed, to the silly themed, usually these are ones that can see a lot of play in my house, which means I'm not stuck only playing solo mode. Placeholder for this right now would be Dungeon Kart, because that's the one that's been hitting the table the most recently because it both has interesting mechanics while still managing to feel like Super Mario Kart, which appeals to Christopher and Ashley... and I haven't had a chance to play Heat. 3. Lovecraftian Horror - Arkham Horror LCG and Mansions of Madness. 'nuff said. No, but seriously, I know this particular theme has been FLOODING the gaming market for years, and I know it's a subgenre of horror. However, Lovecraftian horror when done correctly (and this one DOES apply to films as well), evokes a very different type of horror than almost any other type, enough so that it deserves its own space. And when it IS done well as a game, it's done REALLY well. Both of the ones I listed up front are examples of that, IMHO. 2. Cinematic Horror - "Why such a ridiculously specific theme," you may ask? ...Well, go ahead, ask, I'm waiting. Right, so, this theme has been around for a while with games such as Betrayal at House on the Hill (which we LOVE in this house, despite how ridiculously lopsided it often ends up being just because it focuses on FUN). However, with the introduction of Final Girl, my placeholder for this, I feel like there have been a ton of these going out that actually manage to evoke the theme as a feeling instead of being a game with the theme fairly easily replaceable. Now we have games like Terrorscape (which we don't own but are VERY much looking forward to receiving our copy of), and Halloween, etc, all managing to capture the feel of being in a horror movie with the tension of being hunted, evading the killer, and so on. Even This Game is Killer, probably one of our favorite party games, manages to evoke that feeling in a 10-15 minute game, and I imagine when I finally PLAY Nemesis, that will go right in this category. 1. Science Fiction - To neatly bookend my top 5 by bringing it back around to science fiction, I have found myself gravitating toward science fiction games a LOT recently. Whether it's retheming other games in the style of the Gaia Project, 4X-ish games like Voidfall or Andromeda's Edge, or my current favorite campaign game placeholder, ISS Vanguard, if I find myself craving a certain type of game mechanically-speaking, I will almost ALWAYS pull out the science fiction version of it. So right now, that is my number one theme for board games. I was debating doing this going forward for your guys' top ten, but I just realized a block of text in the comment section of a RUclips video might be a faux pas that doesn't consider those browsing, but since I did it for your bottom 5, I at least wanted to see THIS one through to the end. Have a great weekend!

    I feel egocentric. But I'd love to interact and say: "I'll show you my current top 10 based on my BGG score". 😅 1. Spirit Island 2. D&D The Legend of Drizzt Board Game 3. Pandemic 4. Yggdrasil 5. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King 6. Eldritch Horror 7. Marvel United 8. The Crew 9. STar Wars: The Clone Wars 10. Forbidden Island 11. The Big Book of Madness - Forbidden Desert- Flash Point: Fire Rescue 14. Room 25 (although, it has a hidden traitor) 15. The Crew: Mission Deep Sea. 16. Just One In case of ties: I used the amount of plays as tiebreaker, still tied means they share the same spot. I went a bit beyond 10, as the list is heavy in Pandemic style game. Then there is Room 25, so I added one more, which is the crew. So one more again. And... stop. 🤪

    We got the shipping notification and it arrived the next day. I had been looking forward to this since I first saw it raved about on the Dice Tower. Unboxed it and punched it a couple nights ago and then sleeved it last night. While I appreciate the tight fit- oof just a little more space in the Max Chrome box would be great, since there is barely space for the extra dice I got (6 dice - had to sprinkle them across 3 different trays to fit!). And the extra sleeves- just want it all in the box. But, the game looks GORGEOUS. So sweet. Can’t wait to play.
