  • The #vwT2 or #baywindow turned the #vwcampervan into a global phenomenon. But what are these classic campers REALLY like to live with today? In this video, two experienced owners tell it like it is - giving us an honest guide to buying, maintaining and repairing these characterful buses. Richard Holderness has owned three Bays over thirty years - and introduces to his current van - a rare T2 built in the first six months of Bay Window production. His sought-after 1968 Westfalia conversion is in pristine condition, but he recalls being able to see the road through the holes in the floor of his first van! Tony Hutchins admits his T2 Viking "Mollie" is far from pristine and requires on-going love and attention to keep her on the road. But she's a much-loved family van, used for many weekends away and holidays throughout the year. Tony's not a professional mechanic, but says the simplicity of the T2's mechanicals means it is possible for owners to Do It Yourself. This video was filmed at the Field of Dreams Air-cooled VW Show, with kind permission of the organisers. It's one of the friendliest V-Dub meets that takes place annually in late August/early September.

Have owned our 1970 Early Bay (Dormobile) for about 14 years and love it. Would always prefer to be away in it than any 5 star hotel. About to take the ferry to Spain and then drive back to the UK in it - fingers crossed it keeps going...!

I've got a 68 Westfalia (there's some vids of it on mine and my sons channel). Love it to bits.
    Had loads of Air-cooled vdubs.
This must have been filmed a couple of years ago as a 68 is 55yrs old now!

Well calculated. Editing a bit delayed by a year-long campervan trip through Europe - so just catching up!

Next year is the big 5-0 for my '74 Westy. Purchased 12 years ago with 145,000 miles on the original engine, I put 9K on it in 10 years and then upgraded/rebuilt the engine a year ago. I grew up in one in the '70s and then got one of my own. My family thinks I'm crazy.
