Book Review of Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier
Today, I'm reviewing Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier. This is a young adult fiction novel following an Indian-American high school girl named Dimple who is coming of age and navigating who she is and who she wants to be. This book is a fun quick read, very snappy with lots of fun dialogue and action. It's an important read about a POC experience as well as the story includes a lesbian couple and a transgender woman. These powerful ladies are presented in a positive light and help Dimple to navigate her struggles straddling the world of her family's culture along with her desire to be "cool" in a very white American setting. Seeing the world through Dimple's eyes is an exercise in learning the POC perspective and what it means to live in such a split world. The title says it all - Born Confused. Learning and accepting who you are and moving forward in your own way.
