  • About 11 years after the Hornby Rocket crash, my larger O.S. Rocket went for a leisurely stroll in the park ... that didn't end well!

    Suspension sometimes leads to disaster, take the Thomas Episode Old Faithful, Skarloey's springs break causing him to list but he pushed through and made it

    Excellent draft you must get on that one, it was really working up until the catastrophic capsizing - Love the color choice as well!

    This will be the reason George Stephenson lowered the angle of Rocket's cylinders to almost horizontal. The 12"/ft scale Rocket class locos rock n' rolled all the way all the way to Liverpool.

    Rock n roll is great for music, not for steam engines.

    What was the cause of this horrible derail?

    • @picrijogil
      @picrijogil  2 года назад +1

      a suspension issue - the angle of the cylinders make the engine rock, the wheels lift off the track if it goes too fast and the suspension isn't tuned optimally, and I wasn't quick enough to catch it.

      @@picrijogil It's allways good to know why - so you have the option to improve things!

    • @picrijogil
      @picrijogil  2 года назад

      @Cecilio Verte And Juan miguel it's partly by (inadvertent) design - the angled cylinders always introduce forces into the suspension. The real one did this as well, that is why it was rebuilt the year after with the cylinders angled lower.

      @@picrijogil I don’t think it was this bad because the actual rocket weighed more, and it is not like it is scale weight. but it did definitely “waddle”. It was even worse on sans pariel since the cylinders were completely vertical.
