On another news site, I heard that the secret service agent saw the barrel of gun poking out of the bushes and it was he who fired towards that spot. Routh did not fire a shot. Did anyone else hear that?

It is interesting how there's no explanation of what actually happened. Did he fire a gun? At someone? Who's the witness who saw him and took photos? Did they see him discharge his gun?
I can’t say for sure that he didn’t take any shots, but it does sound as though Secret Service shot first and any shots he may have fired would have been directed at them. But it’s still unclear if he took any shots at all.

First, they need to know if anyone else was involved so they can find them ASAP. Motive can come later. They can prosecute a crime whether they have a motive or not. Involvement of others (or not) will help determine which potential motives are most likely to apply. There could even be multiple motives.
