Who Can Sail Without a Wind (Swedish/Finnish Folk Song)

- "Who can sail without a wind" is a dear people's property from the Nordic song treasure.
The poem is believed to originate from the Swedish speaking part of Finland, but several editions have been found in records from both Sweden and Finland. In its current form it displays a heartfelt melody and lyrics from the romantic interwar period and the power of love. It was recorded in the '70s by American country and pop singer Lee Hazlewood.
I arranged the theme and added 5 variations...
Translation:
1. Who can sail without a wind?
Who can row without the oars?
Who can part from a loved one,
without shedding a tear?
2. I can sail without a wind!
I can row without the oars!
But not part from a loved one
without shedding a tear...
Be safe and wear a mask!

... this brings tears to my eyes. I sang this song to my father after he had died. I don't know why I sang this Swedish song to him, a German man, but it felt very good nevertheless. Now I feel inclined to learn this wonderful guitar version so that I can also play it for him on my guitar. My father was a very good accordion player but I never heard him play. He stopped playing before I war born; because of too much sorrow, I suppose. Every time I hear an accordion, it makes me think of my father...
Vielen Dank Anja. I am sorry for your loss. If you play it on your guitar, I am sure your father will listen and smile.

So clean, so old a tune, yet so new and inspiring, very nice, thank you!
Glad you like it!
Wonderful! Thank you. A Swedish friend played this for me in 1999 and the melody has stuck in my head all these years. I recently asked him the name of the tune and have been listening to many versions today. Your playing is is amazing!
Many thanks, Calvin! Glad your Swedish friend played this for you back then...

Very symbolic lyrics, and indeed who can do without love? These old themes have something simple and direct which appeal to me. Beautiful play Per, enjoyed all the way, thanks for posting amigo, stay healthy, Vic.
Muchas gracias Amigo! The simpler, the better, is my motto! :-) That's why "One Note Samba" is so good! :)

Well amigo, let me say Jobim had this idea of harmonising one note with several chords. When you improvise on the chords then a musician finds out how difficult this progression is. Stay well amigo, greetings Vic.
I play guitar myself and hearing such beautiful music makes my brain and my fingers hurt, and me a bit jealous. I came here to hear some beautiful music and, boy was my wish fulfilled. I always wanted to play folk and classical guitar and this pretty much solidified my dream. Bravo! You are a fantastic artist!
Thank you so much Rykken! I appreciate your comment. I hope I can inspire you to play more classical guitar! Next to love, it's the best!

My mom used to play and sing this to me as a kid. Thank you for bringing such good memories back
This is such a beautiful song. I remember playing a very easy version of this song with the guitar when I was in my early years of playing the guitar. Thank you for this from Finland!
Kiitos Olli. And thank you for buying the score. I hope you will have fun playing it.

Swedish music. All you do is amazingg! Muchas gracias señor Kindgren
Very beautiful! I learned this many years ago in French! I never knew it was a folk tune from my Swedish heritage
I learned it in French when I was in Girl Scouts. For some reason, the tune went through my mind this morning. I looked up the first line (in English) and found your beautiful rendition.
A nice song, I hope to hear more traditional songs from your country, thanks for sharing !
Grazie Massimo! I might make more arrangements like this. The Swedish folk song tradition is huge!
Be well,

My step-father Ronald Opel passed away yesterday, Oct 3rd. He was a stalwart man, strong and kind. i always felt he had more than a little viking in him. This lamentation for the ceasing of the wind, seems to align with my own, for him. You picked a great song Mr. Kindgren. Thank your for uploading and sharing your craft.
I am sorry for your loss. My condolences. Thank you for sharing and for commenting.

Dear Friend,
Even without wind, this music carries me away !
Even without an oar, I will always follow you
and these 5 variations make me shed 5 times more tears.
Tears of gratitude for all those stories that you set to music or that you personalize with your heart
So, yes, on land, sea or in the air I will always be there by your side

Hi Amy. So you have been in Sweden. Beautiful nature, eh?

Hi Per-Olav! Yes, I was an exchange student in Sweden '84-'85. The nature is the most beautiful I have seen.
Have you ever done pieces based on Evert Taube's compositions?
That's really amazing. And for me surprising that I understood the title in the intro without translation. Keep healthy, yes protect yourself and all your friends. Thank you for the music. Thomas

I miss your music 🎶
Dearest Per-Olov,
How nice to listen to your new music again, and right before I prepared my lessons. 😌 This is simply a precious treasure, and for me it is also a lullaby, I love the way you change into the major part. To be honest, I have seen this from your website, I sight-readed, but I think this can be expressed better within the sound of the guitar, rather than just the sheet music. Thanks very very very much for your amazing performance ( just simple words but in my heart it deserved more)
I just have the result, it is not than I expected, but I really appreciate that and try harder. ☺️
Love and stay safe (no virus in here! Yay)

Dearest Y! Thank you for your always sweet and intelligent comments. Very much appreciated. And even if it is only words, I know you appreciate it since you are a great musician yourself!
I am so happy to hear the virus is almost gone in Vietnam! YAY!!

Ken voi purjeitta seilata in finnish. Though the original swedish lyrics are far more popular in Finland as well.
That was beutiful! Thank you! Sincerely, Finland.
Kiitos!
Per-Olov
Wow! What a beautiful arrangement! Although the title of this song is Who Can Sail Without a Wind, I felt like this melody was asking me during your playing; Who Can Live Without Love? That's how I felt. Sadness, tenderness, maybe loneliness. It's just my wild imagination. I'll buy the sheet of music and try to learn it. Originally I'm from Belarus, and I feel like this folk song is pretty close to our Belarusian folk music.
Thank you Vincent! I hope you will buy it and have many hours of fun with it. And you are correct; Scandinavian music and Belarusian music is similar in the way that we use minor keys...
Happy playing!

Your comment about silence in your music reminds me of the book, "Music Quickens Time," by Daniel Barenboim, which I read in early 2010, I think. He talked about how the silence within music is as much a part of the whole as the musical notes themselves. Siempre te doy gracias por tus videos aqui, Per-Olov.
Thank you for this comment. I haven't read Barenboim's book but I totally agrees with him!

But right now I'm working on another piece of yours. Very hard on my fingers. I am not sure if I can ever publish it. We will see.

Been following your videos for the past four years, always a pleasure to tune in to them :)
Do you have any tips as to how to choose a good classical guitar? I'm more or less qualified as "experienced" now, but the technical parts of the guitar isn't my strong suit.
Thanks Mathing. Go for a quality brand (Alhambra, Yamaha, Santana and many, many others). Remember that spending a little more is a huge advantage than buying a cheap one and then want to have a better one later...
Good luck,
Per-Olov
Hi Lena. I didn’t know cats liked this melody too! ;) I hope this video brings some light and sunshine to you.

Hej Per-Olov katten hade utan tvekan gillat den här visan också det är jag helt säker på.Den tyckte om att trona uppe på pianot när min bror eller min mamma spelade.Den gillade allt från klassiskt till jazz.
