Earlier I was singing it in the car and simultaneously while I was singing it I was trying to decide what it means to me, because songs have a different meaning to whoever is hearing them, much like they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people might think it means one thing, while others might think about a totally different thing. i’ve listened to this song dozens of times, i’ve just never really actually considered it’s meaning in my heart. Anyway, i was listening to it and yada yada and then bam, like it hit me what it means to me. So this might make no sense, but it’s basically like my current self talking to my past selves. Calling my tiny, hopeful little tiny self out and saying “hunni your life is about to get so fucked.” Calling my slightly older self out and saying “yeah see how you’re feeling now? Wait a few more years.” Calling my even slightly older self out and saying “hey girl. This is the worst it’s gonna get, from what i’ve seen so far.” And calling her out on all her flaws and give her advice to overcome those even though I know she won’t be able to hear it or even listen to it cause I can’t time travel. "Rake yourself" could likely refers to self-harm, such as scratching until blood appears. It could also refer to harshly judging yourself. If you need more terms, a rake is also a man with loose morals, a term which dates back to Elizabethan times, possibly earlier.

Earlier I was singing it in the car and simultaneously while I was singing it I was trying to decide what it means to me, because songs have a different meaning to whoever is hearing them, much like they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people might think it means one thing, while others might think about a totally different thing.
i’ve listened to this song dozens of times, i’ve just never really actually considered it’s meaning in my heart.
Anyway, i was listening to it and yada yada and then bam, like it hit me what it means to me.
So this might make no sense, but it’s basically like my current self talking to my past selves.
Calling my tiny, hopeful little tiny self out and saying “hunni your life is about to get so fucked.”
Calling my slightly older self out and saying “yeah see how you’re feeling now? Wait a few more years.”
Calling my even slightly older self out and saying “hey girl. This is the worst it’s gonna get, from what i’ve seen so far.”
And calling her out on all her flaws and give her advice to overcome those even though I know she won’t be able to hear it or even listen to it cause I can’t time travel.
And when she starts to cry and blame herself for her future self-hatred and fucked up right wrist and her lowest point in life, her future self tells her it’s not her fault because Current self was the original one, the one who fucked it all up the first time.
Telling her younger self that she’ll never be able to be herself.
Telling her younger self she never gets braver.
Telling herself that she never gets better confidence and the little bit she does get is wasted on fixing the problems she creates within her own little world, her own little head.
Saying she’ll never settle her scores with her motherly figures.
Telling her that she was never going to be the image she had of herself in her head, that she’d never be bold like that one friend she had.
Who, oh by the way, you’re going to fall head over heels for in a little bit.
Telling her that she should listen to her mothers or else she’d stay in her dark place for the rest of her days.
But it was not her fault.
Her younger self breaking down in tears cause now she knows how she turns out,
But the older self simply smiling and saying the words from the song

But at the end, telling her younger self that along the way, she’d meet her dearest friends. She’d lose some of them. That one will always stick around. Telling her that she will make it out of that dark place, whether she thinks she will or not. That one day, she’d have a little sibling on the way. One day, she was going to pull herself up off that floor and that she would force herself to paste a smile on and be happy if it was the last thing she did.
And she did. She got up off that floor on that fateful day and tried so so hard to make herself better.
And she did.
And that’s who you’ve got writing this whole ass paragraph right now.
The best-so-far version of myself.
And that’s Who I’m going to continue to be because that little girl deserves it. That little girl who broke down in tears because she thought she wouldn’t become who she wanted to be, deserves to become better than who she wanted to be.
So she will if it’s the last thing I do.

I hate to break it to you guys, but it does say "rake". The audio in this is piss poor quality, if you listen to the music video the "k" is pretty clear.
"Rake yourself" could likely refers to self-harm, such as scratching until blood appears.
It could also refer to harshly judging yourself.
If you need more terms, a rake is also a man with loose morals, a term which dates back to Elizabethan times, possibly earlier.
